Here is a beautiful Mercedes 240D with manual transmission that runs excellent. It looks great, has no leaks, has AC, is completely rust free, and runs perfect. It was, at some point, in an accident, and was repainted (the original color) and repaired. We were told that the engine was rebuilt at this time (when it had about 100,000 miles). The odometer works and reads 166427 miles, so we assume these are the original miles, but because of the salvage title, we can't be sure. The body is straight except for a small dent/scrape on the passenger side next to the rear tire. There are also a few small dings and scratches that we tried to photograph. The interior is original and in pretty good condition. The upholstery has two or three small tears on the driver's seat: one small one on the lower back, one on the side next to floor and another on the back a little below the headrest. The other seats look fine and just need a deep cleaning. The dash has several cracks but has a fitted carpet to hide them. The wood paneling is still in pretty good condition. The glove box latch is a little loose. The carpets could use a good shampoo. The headliner has a couple very small tears near the sunroof, and the lining around driver's side door is wore and torn. Has the original first aid kit full and untouched. Sunroof button is missing, antennae goes up and down only manually, there is a small crack in the upper corner of front windshield on driver's side. The front tires are pretty good, but the back tires don't have a whole lot of tread. It is not a perfect car, but it runs like a top. It has a lot more pep around town than an automatic. It is also great on the freeway. We took it up to 80 mph and it was as smooth as could be. It starts on the first try every time, it has no leaks, the AC blows cold, and it has also been converted to run on veggie oil we are told, although I see no separate tank in the trunk. This is a classic car that is ready to  be an every day driver. Great on gas and beautiful design. If you are in the area, please stop by and drive it.. Will work with buyer about pick up, but buyer will need to arrange any shipping arrangements.

Boston bombers were tracked using Mercedes mbrace [w/video]

Sun, 28 Apr 2013

We now know Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the two brothers said to be behind the Boston Marathon bombings, planned to head for New York City to detonate more improvised explosive devices. As it turns out, that plan was foiled by the quick thinking of one Mercedes-Benz owner, diligent police work and the Mercedes-Benz mbrace system. When the brothers carjacked a 26-year-old Chinese entrepreneur identified only as "Danny," they didn't realize his Mercedes-Benz M-Class was equipped with the mbrace system, which can call for help in the event of an accident or track the vehicle in the event of a theft.
According to reports, the Tsarnaev brothers held Danny hostage for nearly 90 minutes while they drove around Boston forming a plan until they had to stop for fuel. When one of the brothers went inside to pay, the other put his gun down for a moment. Danny took the opportunity to unlatch his seat belt, open the door and run to another nearby gas station, where he told the owner to call the police.
When police arrived, they used the mbrace system to track the SUV after receiving Danny's permission, and it wasn't long before a shootout between police and the brothers ensued. When it was over, the eldest brother lay dead in the street. For more on the story, view the video report available below.

Mercedes to roll out S65 AMG Coupe in July

Mon, 07 Apr 2014

We're still a couple of weeks away from the public debut of the new Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe at the fast-approaching New York Auto Show, but already we're receiving word of an even more powerful version in the works. That, of course, would be the S65 AMG Coupe - the twelve-cylinder version of the latest S-Class Coupe, two-door counterpart to the S65 AMG sedan and replacement for the outgoing CL65 AMG.
Like the four-door version rolled out back in November, the S65 AMG Coupe would be distinguished from less powerful vehicles (which, lets face it, is just about everything) principally by its engine: a massive, 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 that produces 621 horsepower, 738 pound-feet of torque and cares as much about global warming as an oil-shipping mega-tanker.
Because Merc's 4Matic all-wheel drive system can't handle that much torque, the ne plus ultra coupe would (like the S65 sedan but unlike the S63 coupe) be offered only in rear-drive form. That means it will have that much more trouble getting the power down to the road, but since the Magic Body Control suspension is similarly incompatible with 4Matic, the flagship coupe will get that trick suspension.

VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes

Sun, 06 Jan 2013

The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.
