McLaren applies to trademark three new car names
Mon, Oct 11 2021The McLaren Senna appears to have veered the English sports car maker into the land of proper names. The company began its road car adventure with the F1 way back when, resumed it with the MP4-12C, and carried on from there with a string of excellent models given airline ticket confirmation codes. Since the Senna, we've had the Speedtail, Sabre, GT, Elva, and Artura. There could be more on the way. CarBuzz happened on three McLaren applications filed with the UK Intellectual Property Office to reserve the names Aeron, Aonic, and Solus for "motor land vehicles or cars, parts, and accessories." If we take the meanings of the words as suggestive of their products, we won't get far. Among other things, Aeron was a post-Roman kingdom in what is now southern Scotland, or a Welsh goddess of war, or a river, or a berry, as in the fruit. Aonic mostly shows up in sci-fi novels, as a language in Brandon Sanderson's Elantris series or a contraption in "Kemlo and the Space Invaders," but it's also the brand name of an Australian paraglider. Solus is Latin for alone or unaccompanied, often used as stage direction. Let the guessing games begin. We'll put the usual disclaimer here, that it's impossible to know if these names will be used. And if they are used, we have no clue what they'll be used for. But McLaren must be developing more models, especially with the Sports Series put out to pasture. Those models will need to be identified somehow, and these names don't sound half bad for the task. As for new product from Woking, Automotive News says a successor for the P1 might be with us in 2024, and will "likely ... be a plug-in hybrid," the brand's chosen powertrain technology over the next decade. Otherwise, the 720S could be in for a refresh in 2023, and the GT might get a redesign come 2025. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. McLaren Speedtail 'Albert' has a paint job you absolutely must see
Wed, Aug 4 2021There’s no McLaren Speedtail that looks as wild and exotic as this one. Say hello to the “Albert” Speedtail, made as an homage to the first Speedtail testing vehicle. That initial test vehicle featured a similar look, only done using crude vinyl body wrap. This Speedtail was meticulously painted and sweated over by the McLaren MSO team. The Albert name is derived from McLarenÂ’s 1992 F1 test mules — those testers were given the name Albert, as the name of the road where the F1 was designed and built was called Albert Drive. Since the Speedtail is another three-seat McLaren, the name stuck. The paintwork for this specific Speedtail took 12 weeks total to complete. McLaren broke that down into two weeks of masking, six weeks of painting and the remaining time for drying and reassembling. The MSO team also spent a good deal of time practicing and preparing to paint the actual car before it started. All the masking had to take place on the fully-built car, too, as painters had to ensure everything flowed around the vehicle with panel alignment and the wheels. The final colors chosen for this project are Magnesium Silver and Ueno Gray. That silver is the first color the F1 was ever shown in, and the gray is the color of the 1995 Le Mans winning F1 GTR. The SpeedtailÂ’s teardrop shape lends itself to this sort of patterning and design better than most, and we absolutely adore it. This car already looks like a spaceship on wheels, and adding this paint job only elevates the feeling. McLaren of Beverly Hills originally commissioned this car, and it will make its official public debut at a Beverly Hills Cars and Coffee this Sunday, August 8, in case you were curious to see it in person. Lastly, McLaren noted that this is one of the final Speedtails in the 106-car production run, so McLaren is almost done with this hypercar. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. McLaren 765LT Spider drops the roof on the 755-horsepower supercar
Tue, Jul 27 2021The McLaren 765LT Spider is here, and just like the coupe, it’s a total monster. In fact, itÂ’s a near carbon copy of the 765LT coupe in every way that it could be. WeÂ’ll start with whatÂ’s new and different about the Spider. The power retractable roof is a single slab of carbon fiber. McLaren says it completes the opening or closing procedure in just 11 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph. The roof mechanism is also far more refined than McLaren Spiders of the past, as McLaren promises the mechanism produces half as much noise as the 675LT SpiderÂ’s roof does. McLaren LT cars are known for shedding pounds, and this 765LT Spider is no different. It weighs 176 pounds less than the 720S Spider itÂ’s based on. This weight savings is accomplished through a variety of means. The LTÂ’s forged wheels drop 49 pounds. The carbon fiber seats shed another 40 pounds. A lightweight battery drops 6.6 pounds. All the new carbon bodywork offers 11 pounds of weight savings. Deleting the floor carpet loses another 5.3 pounds. The titanium exhaust weighs 40% less than the standard stainless steel system. And lastly, McLaren deletes the air conditioning and radio as standard, dropping another 22 pounds and 3.3 pounds respectively. You can option both A/C and the radio back on as no-cost options, which is something weÂ’d recommend you do. Of course, making a removable roof version of the coupe means adding weight back. McLaren says the Spider is 108 pounds heavier than the coupe, a relatively light penalty for losing the roof. McLaren says the inherent stiffness of its carbon monocoque is enough that it didnÂ’t need to add in a bunch of additional stiffening to keep the car rigid. Acceleration times are hardly diminished with the added weight. It has an identical 0-60 time as the coupe at 2.7 seconds. Unfortunately, the 0-124 time is reduced by 0.2 second to an agonizingly long 7.2 seconds (/sarcasm). Top speed is a coupe-matching 205 miles per hour. Those bonkers acceleration capabilities come courtesy of the same mega powerful engine used in the coupe. The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 makes 755 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. You can listen to the exhaust via the powered rear window that brings you closer to the noise even if the top is up. Just like the coupe, the Spider gets bespoke wheels, tires and brakes to add performance.
McLaren GT Ride-On joins the ranks of supercar toys
Wed, Jul 21 2021There’s a new McLaren Ride-On toy hitting the market, and this time McLaren made a kidÂ’s toy out of the GT. This GT joins other McLaren Ride-Ons already made out of the P1, 720S and Senna. Just like the actual McLaren GT, this one comes with a rear storage compartment behind the driver. You can stow additional Hot Wheels cars and/or stuffed animals aplenty in the compartment. McLaren promises that three-to-six year olds will enjoy driving the car, too. The single seat is in the center like the McLaren F1 or Speedtail. ThereÂ’s an actual key you use to start the vehicle. When you press the throttle to accelerate, a speaker plays revving sounds from the GT. Plus, the brake pedal is synced up with an actual brake light in the rear of the car. Whether or not other young drivers will pay attention to said brake light is up for debate, but itÂ’s there to bring another level of reality to the experience. Also taking after the road car, McLaren says it fit an “infotainment system” that allows you to play music files off a USB or SD card. An optional MP4 display screen is available if you want to watch videos, too. Apparently, distracted driving is less of an issue when youÂ’re driving on a lawn. WeÂ’re fairly impressed with the design details and the replication of an actual McLaren GT throughout the vehicle. You even get the GTÂ’s dihedral doors to look extra cool hopping in and out of the ride-on. If you want to buy one for your kid, the starting price is $230. Tack on some options (this is a McLaren weÂ’re talking about here), and the price goes as high as $330. You can buy one in the following colors: Burnished Copper, Silica White, Onyx Black, McLaren Orange, Amaranth Red and Burton Blue. McLaren says the GT Ride-On can be ordered from select global toy retailers. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. 1995 McLaren F1 with only 242 miles sets record auction price
Tue, Jun 15 2021Update: The McLaren F1 you see above set a new auction record for the model at Gooding and Company's auction. The winning bid was $18,600,000, with the final sale price of $20,465,000. According to Hemmings this tops the previous record set in 2019 of a little over $19,000,000. The text has been updated. With a run of just 106 examples, a massive top speed of 240 miles per hour, and a Le Mans-winning racing pedigree, every McLaren F1 sports car is special. Some are just a bit more special than others, though, such as the 1995 example you see above. It's a unique color combination and only has 242 miles on the clock. It also set a record for sale price at Gooding and Company's auction at Pebble Beach this year. The car is the 25th McLaren F1 built and the only one to have been finished in a paint color called "Creighton Brown," which the auction house notes was named after an executive who helped get McLaren's road car business up and running. The interior continues the brown theme with dark and light leather throughout. And as for the low miles, it's evident beyond the odometer. Apparently it's still sitting on the same tires it came with back in 1995. So, if you do happen to put more miles on it, please get a new set to drive on, and put the originals in a safe place for your safety and their preservation. The car also comes with all its matching luggage, its original watch, the complete tool chest, roadside tool kit, owner's manual, service book and official book talking about the development of the car. Gooding and Company says this is the lowest mileage F1 example to go to auction, and coupled with its unique color scheme, they expected a high price, and they got it. With a final sale price of $20,465,000, it's the most expensive McLaren F1 ever sold. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. McLaren to enter Extreme E electric SUV series in 2022
Sun, Jun 13 2021LONDON — McLaren will add an Extreme E team to their Formula 1 and Indycar operations next year in a major boost for the newly launched electric off-road series (another team's car is pictured above). McLaren Racing chief executive Zak Brown told reporters he expected the involvement to be "commercially positive" from the start. McLaren would mostly use existing personnel for the team, but not from Formula 1. "What we will never do is distract or detract from our Formula 1 efforts," added Brown. "Indycar, Extreme E are there to be complementary and accelerate our Formula 1 efforts." McLaren will be the 10th team signed up to the five-race series launched by Spaniard Alejandro Agag, who also founded the city-based Formula E championship, with two more slots still available. Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, and 2009 and 2016 world champions Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg, also have Extreme E teams. "The McLaren news is a major, major boost for Extreme E," Agag told reporters in a video call. "We know that there are many manufacturers looking at Extreme E. The news of McLaren entering is for sure going to help other manufacturers look at Extreme E with interest. Today is the biggest news in our short history." The team will be entered by McLaren Racing, rather than the automotive side whose current model range focuses heavily on petrol-engined supercars. Other manufacturers involved in Extreme E - Seat's Cupra brand, Hummer and Lotus - have an electric model or product range to promote but McLaren have in the past ruled out making an electric SUV. "I wouldn't want to speak on their behalf," Brown said when asked whether that approach might change. "This is a McLaren Racing effort solely. "Of course electrification is very important to the automotive group ... (but) it's not an indication one way or the other as to Automotive's position on SUVs." Brown said a possible involvement in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and Formula E remained under review until later in the year. Extreme E aims to raise awareness about climate change and promote sustainability by racing electric SUVs in remote and harsh environments, with a former mail ship used to transport cars between locations. Brown already has an involvement through his United Autosports, which co-owns a team with Andretti Autosports, but the American said he was a "silent partner" in that. He said McLaren's move would give the Bahraini-owned company a broader offering for sponsors.
McLaren Elva offered with a windshield to keep bugs out of your mouth
Thu, May 27 2021Unveiled in 2019, the limited-edition McLaren Elva promised to free motorists from the constraints of sitting behind a windshield. Not all bugs taste good, and not all governments take a fancy to cars without a windshield, so McLaren has listened to customer feedback and introduced a variant of the Elva that's fitted with a full windshield. McLaren identified the two main factors that convinced it to give the Elva its first and only piece of glass. First, some buyers disliked the virtual canopy (called Active Air Management System in McLaren-speak) that was fitted to replace the windshield. Second, getting the Elva registered for road use without a windshield was challenging in some areas, notably in a handful of states in America. Adding this option is expected to broaden the car's appeal. Windshield aside, the Elva hasn't changed. It's still not offered with door windows, a rear window, or a roof. Lightweight construction is one of the Elva's claims to fame; without a windshield, it tips the scale at about 2,900 pounds. McLaren notes the windshield adds roughly 44 pounds, which is impressive considering that figure includes the glass, its carbon fiber frame, a pair of sun visors, and the rain-sensing wipers. The extra weight has no effect on the the Elva's performance numbers, including its sub-three-second sprint from zero to 60 mph, and McLaren has not made mechanical changes. Power still comes from an 804-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. McLaren initially planned to build 399 units of the Elva, but it dropped that number to 249 several months after the car's unveiling. While it didn't reveal how many of those will be built with a windshield, it predicted the new variant will become one of the rarest production cars it has ever made. Deliveries are scheduled to start in early 2021. Pricing hasn't been announced, but remember the regular Elva costs around $1.7 million before options. Lewis Hamilton's 2010 McLaren Mercedes F1 car going up for auction
Tue, May 18 2021Lewis Hamilton has been racing in Formula 1 since 2007, and the multiple-championship-winner has won a lot of races. But none of the driver's former race-winning cars has ever come up for public auction. That will change this summer when RM Sotheby's auctions off a McLaren F1 racer that Hamilton drove during the 2010 season. The McLaren-Mercedes MP4-25A racer is chassis number 1, and features its as-raced silver-and-red Vodafone livery. Hamilton won the Turkish Grand Prix, the Canadian Grand Prix and the Belgian Grand Prix that season. The auction will take place in conjunction with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 17. The sale is being held on Saturday afternoon, just ahead of Sprint Qualifying Race. The Formula 1 race takes place the next day, on Sunday. In a unique — and fitting — twist, the car actually will be lapping the track at speed during the bidding. Whether that will juice the final sale price remains to be seen; the pre-sale auction estimate for the car is $5–$7 million. This content is hosted by a third party.
