This is a 1994 Mazda Miata, Limited Edition "M-Edition".  I am the fourth owner.  The second owner drove it until the Timing Belt broke at around the 83,000 mile mark then let it sit.  The third owner bought it to repair, but didn't have time to, so I bought it from him.  The body is perfect with no rust.  The following items had been replaced:

  • Battery
  • Clutch Master Cylinder
  • Clutch Slave Cylinder
  • Engine Mounts
  • Fuel Injector Harness
  • Fuel Tank
  • Most Gaskets
  • Radiator
  • Radiator Hoses
  • Radio
  • Starter
  • Timing Belt
  • Tires
  • Vinyl Top
The air conditioning system was professionally repaired by Mazda of Wesley Chapel and is blowing cold air.  The fuel injectors were removed, professionally serviced and flow tested - They are working like new.

Here are the negatives:
  • The leather seats are worn and need to be either covered or replaced - See Pictures.
  • While installing the new cloth top, I inadvertently drilled a hole through the top.  It's been patched and it doesn't leak, but you could definitely see the repair - See Picture.
  • The Paint - The top (clear) coat is peeling on the front fender (see picture).
  • The Speakers need to be replaced.
  • Antenna - The top is broken and I believe it should retract, but it doesn't.
  • The steering wheel is worn and I have a cover over it.

All the negatives are relatively minor and don't impact the ride.  The engine is strong and relatively young (only 85,000 miles) and provides for a fun and peppy ride.  Fix up the mostly cosmetic repairs and you have yourself a pretty cool (and rare) ride.

According to a Miata website, "only 3,000 of these were made in 1994.  The Mazda Miata M Edition series of vehicles are very desirable and sought after by Miata enthusiasts.  Searching for a low mileage clean M Edition and finding one is to may like finding the ultimate Miata.  Fairly expensive when first introduced, they can now be found priced as a regular used car, particularly if the seller has no idea what an M Edition is.  Further, the well known used car resale value guides seem to somewhat under value what Miatas are actually trading hands for.  Most clean Miatas will usually sell over blue book value.  M Editions are not sequentially numbered and their VIN numbers will be scattered throughout the regular run for each year.  A total of 12,470 M Editions were manufactured throughout the 4 year run. The colors and features will make any M Edition stand out at a gathering of Miatas and the clean low mileage ones are harder and harder to find.  Montego Blue Mica is the only M Edition color that was used as a regular color in subsequent years through 1997.  The chrome 7 spoke wheels best identify the '94 M as well as M Edition badging, but 1994 is also the last year for the real oil pressure gauge.  The '94 M was the only M-Edition that came with the original style of leather seats that were designed to emulate the seats in certain Ferrari models.  Special features include a Nardi wood shift knob and hand brake handle, polished 7 spoke alloy wheels with locks, air conditioning, stainless M Edition sill plates, M Edition custom mats, power steering, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power mirrors, alloy wheels, Torsen limited slip differential, cruise control, power window, headrest speakers and a power antenna".

The car is sold AS-IS.

Half of Chinese car buyers won't shop Japanese over hard feelings

Mon, May 26 2014

The hard feelings between China and Japan is no real secret. Besides modern-day disputes, the two countries have had a long-running enmity that dates back to well before the atrocities of World War II. All things considered, then, it shouldn't be a shock that half of Chinese car buyers wouldn't consider a Japanese car. This survey, conducted by Bernstein Research, found that 51 percent of 40,000 Chinese consumers wouldn't even consider a Japanese car – which, again, isn't really surprising, when you consider stories like this. According to Bernstein, the most troubling thing is the location of these sentiments – smaller, growing cities where the population is going to need sets of wheels. We imagine it wouldn't be as big of an issue in traffic-clogged Shanghai or Beijing, but these small cities are going to become a major focus for automakers. "Nationalistic feelings are an impediment. [Japanese] premium brands will struggle," analyst Max Warburton wrote in a research note, according to The Wall Street Journal. Things will improve for Japanese makes, although China will remain a challenge, with Warburton writing, "the one thing that comes out most clearly is that most Chinese really want a German car. While we expect Japanese brands to continue to recover market share this year, ultimately the market will belong to the Germans." There are a few other insights from the study. According to WSJ, Japanese brands are viewed better than Korean brands, and they're seen as more comfortable than the offerings from Germany or the US, despite the fact that everyone in China apparently wants a German car. This is a tough position for the Japanese makes to be in, as there's really not a lot they can do to win favor with Chinese buyers. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, particularly as the importance of the PRC continues to increase year after year. Edmunds ranks the best used cars for 2013

Sun, 15 Sep 2013

When people ask us what car we would recommend for them, it's usually not easy to answer. To make a useful recommendation we must consider which of the numerous vehicle segments fits their needs best, and then choose one of the many vehicles offered in each segment. For some people, new cars don't meet their expectations of value, because they lose so much of it the moment they are purchased and driven off the dealer lot. For them, there's always the used-car market, where great deals can be found, but cars' histories of reliability and maintenance records - and perhaps that Certified Pre-Owned warranty - become ever-important factors playing into purchase choice.
To help out, Edmunds has done us the favor of assembling a list of the best used vehicles money can buy, covering model years 2006-2011, according to what it considers the most important criteria when shopping for used autos: reliability, safety, value and availability. That means unreliable, unsafe, super-expensive or limited-edition models don't appear on the list, but instead cars from each segment that are more likely to satisfy the general population.
There are some real goodies on the list, including but not limited to vehicles such as the capable Honda Fit, the cultish Honda Accord coupe (which can be had with a 240-horsepower V6 and a six-speed manual transmission some years), and the powerful Chevrolet Corvette. While Edmunds' choice of the Volvo C70 for best used convertible baffled us at first (not that it's a bad car), it redeemed itself by stating that the Mazda MX-5 still is an unofficial top choice if you don't require more than two seats.

Ward's releases 10 Best Interiors list for 2014

Thu, 10 Apr 2014

While we're still a ways off from the automotive awards season proper, where things like North American Car and Truck of the Year, Motor Trend's Car of the Year and Car and Driver's Ten Best are named, that doesn't mean there aren't trophies being handed out to deserving automakers. Ward's 10 Best Interiors being one of them.
As the name might imply, the magazine focuses on the very best interior treatments in the US market. Whereas some awards purposely exclude extreme, high-dollar offerings, Ward's considers them - the only requirement is that a vehicle has a "new or significantly redesigned interior."
Ward's offered up the list of winners in simple, alphabetical order, and it only seems fair to do the same:
