1957 Mga, Project Car, Runs Well, But Needs Work on 2040-cars

Year:1957 Mileage:29473
Location:

Rochester, New York, United States

Rochester, New York, United States

Note 1:  Since the car was built in a year prior to 1973, in New York there is not a vehicle title.  Instead, the State of New York issues a transferable registration and I have this document.  So, above I showed clear title.  (From the New York State DMV website:  "NYS does not issue title certificates for motor vehicles of the 1972 model year or an earlier model year.").

Note 2:  The mileage shown is what reads on the odometer.  The odometer is currently working, but I cannot guarantee that this is the actual mileage since I don't know the complete history of the car.

Note 3:  The photos show the driver's side front turn signal lens in place.  This was lost whilst driving to the MG car show described below.

The body and frame have rust.  The worst part of the frame is under the doors; this has rusted through and will need to be replaced or repaired.  The rest of the frame seems to be more solid.  I have attempted to show all the rusty areas in the photos and video which can be seen by going to these links:

This shows a video (about 10 minutes) of a walk around the car and a drive around the neighborhood:

This car was stored in a barn for approximately 10 years in Michigan (by my father-in-law) and was hauled by trailer to Rochester, NY in June 2010 and has been garage stored since then.  I had intended to build a vintage race car with it, since it needed a lot of work anyway, or option 2 was to get it running (which I did) and do enough work to pass an New York State safety inspection and drive it as is for fun, sort of a rat rod of sports cars.  But, I decided to sell this one for funding for other projects.

In 2011 I changed the coolant, motor oil, rear axle oil, brake/clutch fluid (flushed lines).  I removed the valve cover (this is when I took the photos with the valve cover removed) and checked valve lash (I am a valve train engineer, so I had to check this).  I made an adjustment to one position of only .002 inches.  I had to replace some wiring connectors at the coil and then it fired up!  After getting it started and running I found coolant leaking from the heater control valve so I removed it and put a crude, but effective plate over the passage in the block.  I tried flushing the fuel tank a bit, but it still has some foreign material.  I have fuel filters on both sides of the fuel pump and have replaced them 2 or 3 times.  I put about 70 miles on it that summer.  I drove it to the Victor, NY MG show (44 miles round trip from my house).  It started and ran quite well so I did not rebuild the carburettors.  I did not run it in 2012.  This year I started it again and took a few drives around the neighborhood.

Some of the problems and missing items:
  rust (as previously described)
  needs new tires
one front turn signal lens and trim ring missing
  cracked windshield
no wiper blades (wiper motor works but does not shut off with switch)
original gas cap missing (home made substitute in place)
heater control valve leaks (removed and engine block passage covered)
rear fenders were welded along the bead (this one really hurt)
seats and pad on center console are loose
needs new material welded in for floor board support and battery box support
clutch works ok(but there is a leak in master or slave cylinder
  fuel gage works intermittently
  tachometer does not work
some interior lights do not work

Working items and features:
  head lights
  tail lights
  brake lights
  engine
  transmission
  oil pressure gauge
  coolant temperature gauge
  some interior lights
turn signal switch works (timer feaure works and contacts verified with ohm-meter), but flashers do not
  negative earth electrical system
  new battery in 2011
has side windows that fit but are not correct for 1957
has knock off type wire wheels
  has rack on trunk lid
  some interior lights work

I do have some spare parts.  I have a brand new emergency brake cable and new rubber pads for accel, brake and clutch pedals.  There are some spare brake shoes, a tail light lens and a few other miscellaneous pieces.

Thank you for looking and considering.

I am happy to answer any questions.

This is a final sale and not returnable so please make sure this is what you want!
