Car was completely restored after my purchase.  As can be seen from the photos, this was a true frame off restoration with extensive renovation.  Driven 9650 miles since restoration.

Renovation and upgrades Included:

  • Chassis stripped to bare metal
  • Chassis reinforced at front cross member back to engine mounts and under differential in preparation for substantial power increase.
  • Chassis was primed and painted.
  • Body:
    • There was damage in several areas.  Everything was repaired including “welding” in one replacement door sill.
    • All cracks reinforced on back side
    • All stress cracks repaired with tissue glass on front side, filled and leveled.
    • Engine bay totally restored
    • Rebuilt one door sill reinforcing steel tube
  • All rubber parts and bushes replaced.
  • All fasteners with a few exceptions replaced.
  • New adjustable rear SPAX shock and new Lotocones
  • New adjustable SPAX front Shocks
  • All calipers rebuilt including new pistons, painted gold
  • New handbrake cable
  • Larger than stock rear pads in stock calipers
  • Discs all turned
  • Replaced one bent suspension arm
  • New ball joints and trunion inserts
  • New rear wheel bearings
  • Wheels all sandblasted, epoxy primed and finished coated: black on back and Lt. Titanium front
  • Steering rack rebuilt to spec with new boots
  • Hood re-shaped for a BD wedge in place of Stromberg hump.
Renovation of Drive Train:
  • All steel parts cleaned and painted
  • Diff. seals replaced
  • Added S130 stiffening bracket
  • Rebuilt clutch slave cylinder
  • New small bore master cylinder (no booster system for very firm pedal)
  • New release bearing
  • New clutch disc - recent
  • New steel face on aluminum flywheel – recent
  • Custom made pins to protect rear suspension in case of Rotoflex failure (they work!)
  • Tires: Michelin XVS-2’s on steel peg drive wheels (center nut)
Motor:
  • I believe the Cosworth BD motor conversion is the easiest and most “period correct” engine conversion for an original Elan or +2
  • Dave Bean Stage 3 Motor – rated 190 HP at 9000 RPM
  • 1700 cc Cortina block and blueprinted crank and rods – limits motor to 7400 RPM; all of the torque of 190 HP motor, likely 175 HP max.
  • 45 mm DHLA Delorttos
  • High capacity and pressure oil pump (60+ psi)
  • Luminition ignition and Lucas Sport Coil
  • Gear-drive starter
  • Bean exhaust: 4-2-1 to 2 1/4 ” pipe, ceramic coated, and heat wrapped
  • One glass pack in middle of car and SuperTrap tunable muffler
  • Cold air intake with large K&N in nose
  • Electric fuel pump plus regulator
  • Cooling:
    • Stock radiator re-cored with extra row
    • SPAL fan
    • Temperature switch on engine outlet
    • Nose to engine bay sealed for all air thru radiator

Electric:

  • Alternator with external voltage regulator
  • Voltmeter
  • Wiring is custom:
    • All 16 gauge or heavier
    • 16 modern fuses versus 4 original
    • Three ground loops
    • Wiring diagram, loop sheets, wire and fuse lists available with car
  • Relays for headlights, horn, fan and fuel pump
Interior:
  • Solid walnut custom dash board with multiple coats of lacquer
  • Original front seats restored with repaired / replaced springs and metal parts and new webbing and foam.
  • Front seats two panels recently replace with original grain vinyl
  • Rear seats new foam and vinyl and new vinyl on side panels
  • Original re-webbed seat belts (front only)
  • New carpets
  • “Stretch” material used for dash, center console and many other soft areas
  • Door panels done with single sheet of vinyl (Okay but not original; I have original panels in poor condition.)
  • New headliner (Okay but not perfect)
Exterior:
  • Recent windshield replacement
  • Paint is Jaguar Brooklands Green
  • Entire body stripped and repaired (some major) and restored.
  • First paint job blistered after a couple of years due to an error in preparation.  First paint was a base coat / clear coat.
  • Hood, trunk and roof have been repainted in same paint code with a single part paint system – color match is very good
  • Rest of car needs to be repainted from primer up to remove remaining blisters.
  • Only two stress cracks have appeared since body restoration (one headlight pod and one washer nozzle hole)
Sounds System:
  • Alpine Tuner / CD Player plays but does not hold memory
  • Polk Component speakers in rear side panels
  • 8” sub-woofers on center tunnel

Pricing

It is quite difficult to price such a car.  The engine alone is worth at least $15K to the right buyer.  I started bidding at a reasonable but low price to be sure I would get bidding started to see what its value really is.  I would love to get the “Buy It Now” price and hope someone goes for it.  The reserve price is set well below the BIN price and I would not let it go for less than that price at this time.

The car can be driven just as it is for general street use and blasting that motor down an open road.  Every older Lotus is a project car either needing work like the paint on this one or the owner can always think of a new upgrade he wants to make depending on his intended use.  By 1969 standards the car handles very well on the narrow tires. To get the car to handle as good it goes, new wheels and tires would be needed.  There are two good choices for the center nut / peg drive wheels from Panasport (13x5) or Minilites (14 x 5 1/2 ).  There are lots of good tire choices for these wheels especially the 14” wheels.

You are welcome to ask questions via ebay or come see the car in South Jersey.

Payment: Send $1000 via PayPal within three days of end of auction.  We can arrange payment in full and car pick up after order confirmation deposit.

Lotus supposedly working up a new Elan, again

Mon, Nov 4 2019

Geely's investment in Volvo, and giving Volvo the freedom to do what Volvo knows how to do, propelled the Swedish automaker to another level. This could be the year English automaker Lotus begins the same climb. Late last year, Bloomberg said Geely committed an initial $2 billion to the Lotus renaissance. That number was low, the Financial Times reporting Geely planned to invest billions over the next five years. In May this year, Lotus announced it was hiring 200 new engineers and opening a new engineering center to develop a new range of SUVs, GTs, and sedans that would expand consumer appeal to triple its current annual volume. Sports cars are a vital part of the new mix as well, Autocar citing Lotus insiders for a report that a new Elan convertible sports car has "a strong possibility of being revived in the next few years" as a nameplate.    Lotus made a splash about bringing back the Elan — along with a new Esprit, Eterne, Elise, Elite, and city car — at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. That was a very different Lotus, when Malaysian automaker Proton owned the English outfit and ex-Ferrari marketing honcho Dany Bahar manned the helm. In spite of promises of funding, the team at Hethel lurched through years of corporate drama and dire finances until Geely took over in 2017. The latest Elan whispers sketch a convertible targeting the Porsche 718 Boxster - Lotus in general has Porsche in its sights. The car pictured above is from the first re-animation of the Elan badge, from 1989 to 1995. A coming Elan would sit above the Elise in the lineup, with more space, amenities, and luxury, at the same time as it would focus on being the lightest and most agile in the segment. Before that arrives, however, Lotus needs to finish developing the sports car platform that will help carry the brand's new range for the next decade; The Lotus SUV uses Volvo's SPA architecture that carries the XC90 and XC60. CEO Phil Popham's Vision-80 program — which now seeks to grow annual volume not merely triple but six-fold to 10,000 cars by 2029 — will be centered around the multi-material architecture that replaces the Elise and Evora architectures presently employed. Due in two years, the rivet-bonded "alloy-core" chassis will likely include carbon fiber and other advanced materials.

New models, new markets: Lotus plans major expansion in the 2020s

Wed, Apr 1 2020

Lotus was so quiet during the 2010s that some enthusiasts wonder if it still exists. It's alive, it's healthier than it's ever been in recent memory, and it's orchestrating a major expansion that will put it back in the spotlight. Its renaissance starts with the Evija, an electric hypercar packing a 2,000-horsepower punch that Matt Windle, the company's engineering boss, called a trailblazer. Future models will all be influenced by this limited-edition coupe. Beyond that, the company is taking steps to overhaul its entire business, from the design language that characterizes its cars to the restaurant its employees eat at — seriously. Even the cafeteria is getting a makeover. "We're building the brand, building the product range, building the dealer network, and building facilities. There's a huge investment program going on," Windle told Autoblog. "We need to shoot the arrow far enough ahead so that we don't get stuck in the day-to-day problems and instead keep an eye on what we need to do long-term," he added. The company's to-do list is long, and rebuilding a brand is difficult, but Lotus believes it can pull it off. The executive team is betting on an array of new products to reach customers in markets Lotus has little or no presence in; the United States comes to mind. The ultimate goal is to increase the brand's annual volume. Windle understandably couldn't shed light on the product plan, but unverified rumors point to a born-again Esprit powered by a 500-horsepower hybrid powertrain made up of a mid-mounted, Toyota-sourced V6 and electric components provided by sister company Volvo. Another one of the company's future models is an SUV —its first — allegedly built on Volvo bones and aimed at the Porsche Macan. We hear a new Elise is coming, too. The engineer explained his team doesn't feel the least bit constrained by the decades-long heritage Lotus is built on, and it's ready to embrace new technologies as it moves forward. "Electrification has given us the ability to look at things differently," he explained, while clarifying the company's core values (aerodynamics, ride, handling, and lightweight construction) won't be overlooked as it expands. "We will stay true to them," he pledged. "Light is right," the phrase famously coined by Lotus founder Colin Chapman, will live on, then. China-based Geely purchased a majority stake in Lotus in 2017 and it's helping turn it around.
