Lotus Esprit S1 Full Frame-off Restoration
This Series 1 Esprit is one of 718 S1s produced. These cars Have been lauded for its handling and is said to have the best steering of any Esprit. The S1 Esprit can be distinguished from later Esprits by a shovel-style front air dam, Fiat X1/9 tail lights, lack of body-side ducting. Inside the car, the most obvious indication of an S1 Esprit is a one-piece instrument cluster with green-faced Veglia gauges. The Series 1 embodied Lotus' performance through light weight mantra, weighing less than 1,000 kg (2,205 lb). Lotus' claim of 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 138 mph. This is actually an S1 Esprit. It has a very late production date. (May 1978). Lotus was gearing up to produce the S2’s (which started production in May 1978) and were starting to add some of the production changes to the line before actually introducing the S2. This car has a few of those changes. Dual headlamp motors, some additional body to chassis attachment points. The battery was moved to the very rear of the boot. Mine had the battery there but I preferred the location in the S1’s so I moved it back. Lousy access but better weight distribution. The heater fan has dual fans like the S2’s. This car has received a complete Frame-off Restoration (see photos). Numerous Powder Coated parts as well as the best quality of paint finishes. Best quality used thorough out, Koni shocks, Stainless exhaust, Epsilon 3 piece wheels, Griffin Aluminum radiator, Spal cooling fans and much more. Chassis and suspension components all powder coated. Body stripped to bare fiberglass, epoxy primed, and painted in Glasurit base coat clear coat paint to a better than new finish. New factory correct interior. This car is absolutely fantastic inside and out. Runs and drives as good as it looks. Traveled only 3,000 miles since restoration. Recap: 2013 Spanish Grand Prix is Catalan for 'Lottery' and 'More pit stops'
Tue, 14 May 2013This year's Formula One season might qualify as being just as crazy as last year's, only it's a different kind of crazy. Instead of a new winner every Sunday, how the winner actually manages to take the victory is the mystery, and just when we thought the season might have settled into a groove regarding team performance, here comes the Spanish Grand Prix to remind us that we don't know anything until the race has been run.
There were many similarities to past weekends to being this one: Mercedes-AMG Petronas showed awesome one-lap pace, Fernando Alonso did well enough in qualifying to get fifth on the grid but talked up the race pace of the Ferrari, Kimi Räikkönen was the equivalent of a racing photobomber, never saying much but always showing up in the picture, Felipe Massa wasn't really big on the tires and McLaren might want to consider starting a blues band they spend so much time singing them.
Then the lights went green and things went nuts...
James Bond Lotus Esprit submarine car headed to auction [w/video]
Fri, 28 Jun 2013We've covered many cars from the movies and TV that have made their way to auction (the original Batmobile, good old General Lee and even Bond's iconic Aston Martin DB5), but this one ranks up there among the rarest and coolest. RM Auctions has just announced that the Lotus Esprit submarine car used in the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me has been added to the docket for its upcoming auction in London, September 8-9.
Of course, there are dozens of Bond cars floating around out there in collections, but none as unique as this Lotus, which ended a chase scene in the movie by taking a long walk off a short pier and transforming itself into a submersible. Since CGI was a meaningless collection of letters back then, the producers of the film actually built a fully functional Lotus Esprit submarine for the shoot. They hired Perry Oceangraphic in Florida to turn one of their six Esprit body shells into a fully functioning submarine, and former US Navy Seal Don Griffin was tapped for piloting duties. RM Auctions claims the Esprit submarine cost over $100,000 to build at the time, which is about $400,000 in today's dollars.
The submarine car comes with a incredible story, too. After filming in the '70s, it was shipped to Long Island, NY where it was kept in a storage unit that was paid in advance for ten years. When the storage contract ended in 1989 and no one claimed the contents, they were sold off in a blind auction to an area couple who had no idea what they were getting. The car has been shown occasionally in the years since, but its value remained purely speculative, until now. To date, the most valuable Bond car we know of is the original Aston Martin DB5 used in Goldfinger and Thunderball that sold for $4.6 million in 2010, but when the gavel falls at RM Auctions' London sale in September, we'll find out if the car nicknamed "Wet Nellie" on set can beat it.
Lotus confirms new Elise S Cup
Tue, 09 Sep 2014Head on over to the Lotus website, and though the Elise isn't offered in the United States anymore, buyers in other markets can choose between numerous models: there's the base Elise, the Elise Club Racer, the Elise S and the Elise S Club Racer, and that's before even getting into the even more extreme Exige that's also based on the Elise. Track-day enthusiasts can also go for the full-on Elise S Cup R, but now the British sportscar manufacturer has confirmed a new variant.
Called the Elise S Cup, it slots in between the CR and the Cup R as an extreme performance model that can actually be driven to the track and back home on public roads. The S designation tells us it packs the 1.8-liter supercharged four that already produces 217 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque in the existing Elise S, Elise S CR and Elise S Cup R, but as we saw when Lotus was testing the new variant around the Nürburgring, the Elise S Cup packs some key upgrades.
It's got an aero kit - including front splitter, winglets, side skirts, rear diffuser and rear wing - that's more aggressive than other road-going models (though apparently less extreme than the track-focused S Cup R), helping to generate 145 lbs of downforce at 100 mph and 275 lbs at top speed and besting the Elise S around the Lotus test track by an impressive three seconds.
