This auction is for a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 finished in Wild Berry Metallic (a.k.a. Black Cherry, Aubergine or Purple) with the Quartz Grey Barton/Bishop premium velour interior. Code named ZJ, it’s powered by a high output 190 horsepower and 225 lb. ft. of torque 4.0 liter straight 6-cylinder engine that has earned the reputation of being one of the brand’s most rugged and reliable powerplants in recent history. In fact, this engine has been used by Jeep since 1987 and was itself an evolution of a 258 cubic inch engine from back in the AMC days of the 70’s. So desirable it has been that it’s powered various Jeeps all the way up to the 2006 models. It features a cast iron block and cylinder head for excellent durability, an aluminum valve cover and intake manifold for reduced weight and multi-point fuel injection for maximum power output. This 4.0L engine is more than capable of performing any job you can give it, from carrying cargo with over a half ton of payload capacity to towing a heavy trailer. While it’s not as powerful as the V8 engine, you can get much better fuel economy with 22 to 24 mpg real world highway driving compared to the V8 which will barely reach 16-17 mpg. And it runs great on regular grade gas. Of course the 6-cylinder engine is much easier to work on with much more room under the hood than the V8.

The engine is mated to an Aisin AW15 5-speed manual transmission which sets this Grand Cherokee apart from all the others out there, and perhaps puts it into the semi-collectable category of Jeeps in the same vein as 5.9L models a few years later. The 5-speed was only available in 1993 and 1994 with estimates of around 1,000 so equipped in the first year and only about 300 for ’94 making this example especially rare. So in effect, the Grand Cherokee is the last full sized SUV sold in America to be equipped with a manual transmission. This transmission has a low first gear that provides brisk acceleration when starting off, while the high top gear allows for effortless highway cruising and good fuel economy.

Finishing off the Grand Cherokee’s powertrain is a Command-Trac® four wheel drive system with a New Process 231 two-speed transfer case and rugged Dana axles front and rear. This 4X4 system has four driving modes. 2WD is designed for all normal driving conditions where low traction isn’t an issue. 4 High is for driving in snow, mud, sand or off paved roads and can be engaged on the fly at any legal speeds. 4 Low is for situations that require extra pulling power at low speeds such as when crawling over rocks or pulling a boat up a steep boat ramp. Neutral is for disconnecting the axles from the powertrain and is used most often when the vehicle is towed behind an RV with all four wheels on the ground.

This Grand Cherokee is fully equipped with all the desirable safety, comfort and convenience features and equipment including:

  • 190 H.P. 4.0 liter 6-cylinder engine
  • 5-speed manual transmission
  • Command-Trac® 2-speed transfer case Shift-On-The-Fly four wheel drive system

The truck is in excellent condition inside and out. It’s probably one of the cleanest ZJ’s out there and is certainly the cleanest early model ZJ you will find for sale. I would say it’s in as nice a condition as a nice 2006 model with under 80,000 miles would be. The metallic Wild Berry paint just about glows in the sunlight, and this beautiful shade of purple really catches everyone’s eye. It has an excellent body with no rust or dents, not even any door dings to mention, just a few touched up minor scratches and nicks that you would normally expect on a truck of this age. All the plastic bodyside cladding and bumpers are in great shape as well as the chrome grill. The paint itself is excellent and has been cleaned with Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay System, polished with Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze cleaner/polish and topped off with Meguiar’s Ultimate Synthetic Wax for a high gloss shine. Even both the front and also the backsides of the wheels have been cleaned and waxed! How obsessed is that? The headlights were detailed with the 3M headlight polishing system for a crystal clear look. The fog lights and all the glass, moldings, emblems and trim are excellent.

I checked the truck out top to bottom and found no evidence that is was ever wrecked or that it even has had any previous paint or bodywork done to it. Remember, it’s hard enough to find a three year old or 30,000 mile vehicle that hasn’t had at least a fender-bender requiring a bumper, hood or fender to be replaced or repaired, let alone a 20-year-old truck with over 200,000 miles on it.

The interior is beautiful as well. It has excellent upholstery, carpet, dashboard and door panels with no cracks, rips or tears or any significant signs of age. The truck doesn’t look or smell like it was ever smoked in. In fact, it’s not even equipped with a lighter. The cargo area looks like it was hardly ever used and the engine compartment has been fully detailed and is clean enough to eat off of.

Mechanically it runs and drives great. The engine and transmission pulls strong and yet feels smooth both while accelerating and throughout the cruising range. The clutch is tight with no slippage and the shifter goes through the gears precisely with a little notchiness mostly when cold. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, the brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping and the suspension is tight. The A/C blows ice cold. It has a matching set of four BFGoodrich all-terrain tires size LT235/75R15 with very good tread on the fronts and fair to good tread on the rears. These tires are M+S rated and have a deep lug tread design for excellent off-road traction yet still provide a smooth quiet highway ride year round. They have been balanced with coated stick-on balance weights mounted on the inside of the wheel for a super clean look. These weights won’t corrode and turn ugly like cheap uncoated weights.

The truck has been fully checked out and serviced with nearly $2,700 worth of new or recent parts, maintenance and repairs with original Mopar or other name brand parts so that only your enjoyment rather than your immediate attention will be required on delivery. Some of the items checked or serviced include:

  • New Mobil 1 oil change

  • New Mann fuel filter

In addition to the above service, all the accessories and electrical systems have been checked. All the power windows go up and down properly from the master switch and all the individual switches. All the power door locks including the rear hatch lock and unlock properly from all the switches and the remote. The radio works. The cruise control works. The power mirrors work. The headlights work on high and low beam. The fog lights and all the other exterior lights work. All the interior dome and courtesy lights work. The speedometer and all the gauges work. The heater and A/C works.

If you are serious about buying a ZJ Grand Cherokee in general, and a hard to find 5-speed model specifically, this is about as low as they go in this nice condition. Remember, you can get a great deal on Ebay with prices sometimes way below retail, but no bidder is going to “steal” a vehicle and no seller is going to give one away either. Also when comparing prices to the other Grand Cherokees listed, remember the things that you won’t have to spend money on soon after getting it home. With this truck you won’t have to spend $600 on a fuel pump replacement, you won’t have to spend $500 for a new set of tires, you won’t have to spend $300 on a complete front brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a complete rear brake service, you won’t have to spend $250 on a tune-up and filters service, you won’t have to spend $250 on an exhaust system. With many of the other listings on Ebay, you’re lucky if they even check the oil before delivery.

This is a one lady owner southern truck originally from West Virginia which is probably why it’s so clean. CLICK HERE to see the original 1994 title. The truck has a clean Carfax. CLICK HERE to see the Carfax report.

While most dealers just buy a vehicle to flip in a week or two, I bought this Jeep at a dealer auction more than a year ago to use as one of my personal drivers which is why I serviced it top to bottom. And I’m also passing on the savings in this Ebay auction. If instead of selling it back at a dealer auction I can sell it here on Ebay for a similar price and avoid dealer auction fees and transportation expenses, and the new owner gets the car at a true wholesale price, then both buyer and seller make out ahead. There are many other nice Grand Cherokees listed for $2,000 to $3,000 that may seem like good deals (although none with the rare 5-speed), but if after getting it home you find it needs another $3,000 in parts and repairs, it’s no bargain. If you know what this truck is, you know what it’s worth.

If you are looking for a 5-speed Grand Cherokee in excellent condition at a good price, then this truck is hard to beat. Also remember that we don’t charge dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. And don’t be fooled by some other auctions that are advertised as NO RESERVE and start at $100 or some other low price. Since no dealer is going to risk losing thousands of dollars if their auction doesn’t bring enough money, you can be pretty sure he has some “people” bidding on it for him. Especially those auctions that are private listings where it says “User ID kept private.” Also, because my reserve is close to the Buy It Now price, don’t think that you will get a much better deal if you just keep bidding it up instead of using B.I.N., especially if you need it delivered.

TERMS OF THE AUCTION ARE AS FOLLOWS: Since this truck may be advertised locally, auction can be canceled at any time (unless auction ended early with BUY IT NOW) due to prior sale without liability to any bidder. A down payment of $500 (plus any additional delivery charge) is required within 3 days of the close of the auction, balance due in cash on delivery or certified funds on delivery if I deliver it or you pick it up, or before it’s dropped off at the transporter if a shipping company is transporting it, but no later than 7 days after the close of the auction without prior agreement. I accept bank or certified checks, money orders, credit cards through PayPal (accepted for down payment only). If paying balance with funds other than cash, buyer to fax copy of monetary instrument no less than 24 hours before picking up vehicle.

The truck is sold as is. Buyer is welcome to inspect truck BEFORE the end of the auction or to have someone check it out on your behalf provided you authorize whoever is checking the truck to provide me with a copy of the results. I have tried to accurately describe this truck, both mechanically and cosmetically but you can expect a certain amount of minor flaws on ANY used truck including squeaks, rattles, drips, nicks, chips, scratches, blemishes and any other marks that are consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle. There is no possible way to include all minute details and imperfections, however, I believe my listing accurately depicts this vehicle and if there are any issues they are noted in the description. Also remember that a vehicle is made up of thousands of mechanical parts and components and in an older or higher mileage used vehicle a part that is working fine now may go bad the next day, in a week, or a month from now. It’s nearly impossible to tell when a particular part or component will fail as most don’t exhibit prior symptoms, however, proper preventative maintenance as this truck has received, can prevent most problems or breakdowns from happening.

In fairness to all bidders the reserve price will not be disclosed so please don’t even ask.

Buyer responsible for transportation and truck must be paid for in full before it can be released. May deliver. Email or call for delivery quote or for any other questions. atikovi@email.com Maryland and District of Columbia dealer. Phone 202-246-5201. Please do not bid if you don’t intend to buy.

FREE DELIVERY TERMS: Free delivery within 500 miles of the Washington DC area if bidder purchases vehicle with Buy It Now. (35 cents per mile for additional miles as shown in MapQuest.com from zip code 20001 to your address.) That is still the same rate as when I started on Ebay 14 years ago even with more than double the gas prices. Remember, the Buy It Now option disappears once the reserve price is met. The Buy It Now price is $3,995.

AUCTION ENDS: 10:00pm sharp, EASTERN TIME Tuesday January 14th unless Buy It Now is used.

Auto critic calls out Corvette, Mustang and Cherokee faithful

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

Most automotive purists fear change, but not without reason. Change, after all, did kill big-block V8s, along with most station wagons and manual transmissions. But change has also brought with it far more performance, safety and fuel economy - not to mention ridding the world of shag carpet interiors, bias-ply tires and those horrible motorized seatbelts of the early '90s.
By this time next year, the Chevy Corvette, Jeep Cherokee and next-generation Ford Mustang will all be on sale and will all, in some way, have angered or offended purists. To those critics, Mark Phelan of the Detroit Free Press is preemptively telling them to stop complaining - at least until they've all been driven. From the Corvette's square taillights and the Cherokee's radical nose to whatever pony car purists will harp on the 2015 Mustang for, Phelan's column points out the positives of automotive evolution and the negatives of staying the course for too long. That's fair enough, but do you think Phelan is on point, or all wet? Head on over to the Detroit Free Press to read his words, then have your say in Comments.

Federal investigations about safety of rear-mounted gas tanks is nothing new

Sun, 09 Jun 2013

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Chrysler are currently making waves in our daily news feeds due to a disagreement over the safety of a few million Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokee models. Specifically, NHTSA has asked Chrysler to recall the SUVs because of the location of their fuel tanks, but you may be interested to know that requests such as this are nothing new.
Besides the two Jeep models, NHTSA has launched investigations over the years in such models as the Ford Crown Victoria (and its police-car counterpart), GM pickups built between 1972 and 1987, and rather famously the Ford Pinto.
Understanding how automakers and NHTSA have dealt with fuel-tank-safety concerns in the past may offer a better understanding of how Chrysler and the government agency will settle their current dispute. Check out the complete article from The Detroit News here.

Jeep dealer buries WWII Willys GP in showroom floor

Tue, 04 Nov 2014

The Willys MB Jeep earned icon status during World War II thanks to its ruggedness, simplicity and go-anywhere ability. Following the war, it didn't take long for the handy vehicles to be scooped up by the public, and a brand slowly grew around the vehicles that has continued to thrive. Fast-forward to present day, where it's not uncommon for auto dealers to try to grab some of the magic of yesteryear by displaying classic models to connect customers with their brands' proud histories. Now, a Canadian Chrysler Group dealer is taking that notion to the extreme by actually making a vintage WWII Jeep part of its foundation.
Bay King Chrysler in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, recently completed its new showroom, and the franchise really wanted to show its dedication to the Jeep brand. As dealer principal Jamie Richter tells Autoblog, the inspiration for the Jeep installation came from his brother, who became fascinated with a home that had a glass floor looking down into its wine cellar. The company already had the 1943 Willys MB to display, but it had originally planned to build a jungle gym around it for customers' kids. Now, the classic is literally in the floor as customers enter. Richter tells Autoblog that customer reaction so far has been "fantastic."
It's certainly a novel way to bring people into the showroom, and seemingly a nice nod not only to Jeep, but to the men and women who served in the war. If you want to see more about how the Jeep was actually installed and what it looks like, check out this video.
