Do you employ your car, or ENJOY your car?

Here for your consideration is a 1997 XK8, Anthracite (black) exterior, black convertible top, "mocha" interior - kind of a light brown. 108,000 miles. I have owned it for three years.

You can do your research on this car, when new, it cost $68,000.00. If you have never driven one, then how to explain... I also have a Dodge Magnum. The Jag, not just little bits of wood trim, but the whole dash is this burled walnut plank that runs door to door. The wood is also on the steering wheel, shift knob, power window controls... and what is not covered in wood is covered in leather - door panels, dash, center console. The feeling is so rich, calming even, not the expanse of cheap smelly plastic on the Dodge. Sitting in the Jaguar, yes, it still feels like a car that I could never afford new.

Likewise, if you have never owned a convertible, then you probably cannot appreciate the feeling of motoring around town with the sun and sky and wind surrounding you, almost motorcycle-like, and in this car, peering over the humps of the front wheels, with the door line lower than a Mini Cooper, well, it is so slick, like a luxury go-cart. The top is full power with no latches to work; just one button or key turn, even when driving (under 15 mph).

For a car of its age, this Jaguar is in good condition. I think of it like a sexy older lady, a bit worn around the edges, but a thrill to be with, and still turns heads. Here is the rundown on what is an honest evaluation.

Most everything works, it is a daily driver, and it still gets complements at gas stations and traffic lights. The top is in excellent shape and retracts with no problems. The engine uses some oil but not excessive, it just passed emissions test (June 6th 2013) with incredibly low numbers for a car of this age. I get about 26 MPG on the highway, and though it is not the fastest car on the road, it is quicker than most.

There are some paint flaws, and it looks like the right front was repaired at some point and the hood poorly re-painted. The front bumper is peeling. The wheels are the revolver style that were chromed at some point and show some corrosion. The headliner needs replaced as it is dirty, though I have not tried to clean it (I have this sourced for $115). The front seats need recovered (also sourced with original leather for $650 plus another $300 to install). I have a set of color coordinated neoprene covers on the way that I was going to put on until I could afford to do the leather.

It has some annoying things - rear brake light warning light, I fiddle with the bulb and it goes away. Not sure if it is a wiring problem or socket. Sometimes under hard manual shift I get a transmission error, which always clears after restart, so I pretty much leave it in "drive." I think it is a shifter gate problem and not in the transmission itself.
When I run it daily or several times a week, there is no oil leakage, but when it sits - and the seals dry out I assume - there is a leak. Someone said that British cars are meant to leak.

There is only one key and no manual or records. When I bought it, CarFax showed some 8 or 9 previous owners, all southern California.

All said, this is a most excellent daily driver that still out looks and out performs nine out of ten cars on the road today. You can get into this at less than the cost of a used KIA, and have so much more FUN in it!

Engine and Transmission: 4.0 V-8
top speed 155.00 mph
60-0 braking 136.00 ft.
0-60 6.10 seconds
skidpad 0.86 g

Lunaz electrifying classic cars with coachbuilt, millimeter precision

Fri, Oct 11 2019

One day last year, as David Lorenz waited by the side of the road for repair help with his classic car, he had an idea: Why not update all of that ancient mechanical "character" with a modern electric drivetrain? That would give an owner the beauty of the past, the mechanicals of the present, and the powertrain of the future. Jaguar does it with the E-Type Zero, and Aston Martin's in the game with the reversible EV powertrain swap for the DB6 Volante. And so Lorenz founded the British engineering firm Lunaz Design, named after his daughter Luna and headquartered at the Silverstone Technology Park. The company's first products are almost ready for order, starting with a 1953 Jaguar XK120 and a 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V. Lunaz conversions aren't a matter of pulling an engine and installing a battery pack; Lunaz reengineers classics. Managing Director Jon Hilton oversees a team bringing experience from carmakers such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Jaguar, McLaren, and Rolls-Royce, with Hilton's resume including six years with Cosworth Engineering followed by eight years in Formula One. To develop the Lunaz offerings, a chosen car is stripped to the metal and weighed so that engineers understand the weight distribution at each corner, then the car is stripped to the chassis and 3D-scanned. This yields information allowing designers to create a powertrain that fits to the millimeter and stays true to the handling dynamics of the original vehicle. During the rebuild, the company says, any imperfections are remedied "using traditional coachbuilding techniques." The Jaguar and the Rolls-Royce get battery packs in two locations, one under the hood and one under the trunk floor. Lunaz says it can fit more battery for its in-house design into each car that way. The Jaguar's 80-kWh battery feeds two electric motors sending 375 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. The Phantom V uses a 120-kWh battery pack, but its output hasn't been released. While remaining true to the exterior and interior design of each car, Lunaz fits LED lights and modern tires, a modern suspension, better brakes with regenerative braking, power steering, an upgraded propshaft, and a fly-by-wire throttle. Safety and comfort additions include cruise control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. Inside, the instrument cluster gets battery gauges, there's modern climate control, an infotainment screen with satellite navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Jaguar appoints Joe Eberhardt as North American President

Thu, 19 Dec 2013

Jaguar Land Rover North America has appointed a new president, Joachim Eberhardt. The German exec, 50, had previously done stints at Chrysler Group, DaimlerChrysler UK, Mercedes-Benz USA and Daimler-Benz.
Eberhardt joins JLR NA in a good, but challenging time for the company. It's fresh off the launch of the Range Rover Sport and Jaguar F-Type, which have been subject to rave reviews, and its overall sales are up 21 percent over 2012. Still, as Automotive News points out, the two manufacturers face a fight to become the equal of A-list competitors like BMW and Mercedes in the eyes of consumers.
"Joe brings a proven industry track record and valuable global leadership experience in luxury sales, service and marketing. We look forward to Joe leading our North American team in working with our retail networks to further grow the business and better serve our customers," JLR's group sales operations director, Andy Goss, said.

Jaguar Land Rover puts the freeze on wounded soldier-athletes [w/video]

Mon, 21 Jul 2014

For athletes, the cold is often a powerful ally in treating injures, with RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) a popular means of treating muscle pulls, bruising and other common forms of discomfort. Did you know, though, that frosty temps are also popular tools for simply recovering from a rough training session?
Well, we're guessing Jaguar Land Rover knew that, as the British company was kind enough to loan out its climactic testing chamber to Jaco van Gass and Luke Darlington, a pair of veterans wounded in their service to Queen and Country. Van Gass, a former private in the Royal Army, and Darlington, a Royal Marine, are attempting to earn a spot on the British Armed Forces cycling team for the upcoming Invictus Games.
The Games, inspired by the Warrior Games held in the United States, are a sporting competition reserved for injured servicemen and women, either active duty or veterans, and is slated to take place from September 10 to 14 in London's former Olympic venues. Van Gass lost his left arm below the elbow after getting hit by a rocket-propelled grenade (he also suffered from a collapsed lung, punctured internal organs, severe shrapnel and blast wounds, a broken tibia and a fractured knee). Darlington, meanwhile, suffered a traumatic brain injury during action in Afghanistan, and he now suffers from weakness in his right side and cognitive issues.
