1970 Jaguar Xke 4.2 Fly In/drive This Awesome Sculpture Home! Video Test Drive! on 2040-cars
Branford, Connecticut, United States
Very sweet and striking E-type, fantastic shine, beautiful Azure blue, great fun to drive and absolutely awesome to look at!
There is nothing quite like an XKE! I am around all sorts of British cars all day but when I parked this cat at the boat yard to take these pictures, I was surprised how I could not take my eyes off this striking car! I spent quite a bit of time marveling at the unique shape of this stunning vehicle (everyone who sees it agrees). It is a true sculptural form. This particular Jaguar is a solid and rust free car. It was completely stripped to bare metal in 2008, then properly prepared for paint and then repainted in Azure blue, a series III Jaguar factory color that looks great on this car. The car had been dark red prior, and I was impressed that I could not find any remnant of red on the car. This was a thorough restoration job! Just 3000 miles have been added since that restoration.
This car is great to drive with smooth six cylinder power and a great four-speed gear box. Great oil pressure, smooth shifting, everything sounds wonderful, recent stainless steel exhaust system. You can ride along in the video below! The prior owner said he gave a blank check to a Florida restoration shop to perform that work (he's available to speak to the winner of this auction, if desired). No expense was spared. The seats were recovered in black leather. The floor pans were repaired and replaced as needed with new sheet metal welded in place and seam sealer applied to seal the welds. The Fuel tank was removed, cleaned and replaced after the entire trunk was repainted. I have been promised the folder full of receipts for the car, and they will be forwarded to the winner of this auction. Thousands were spent to restore the car, all to the benefit of the new owner who wins this auction. The body is quite smooth and straight with no dents or dings. The nose is excellent. The front of nose is very smooth especially up front where these cars are vulnerable to parking-lot dents… that's really nice to see! There is one dent under the nose, but you have to put the car up on a lift to see it. What you do see of the front of the nose is quite excellent. The chrome is quite nice throughout with only some minor pitting on the front bumper, which was too nice to replace during restoration, although not perfect. Chrome wire wheels are nearly new, with excellent tires. Boring octagon knock offs were replaced with much more sexy two-eared knock offs-- a nice touch! No A/C. Runs cool. Runs great! Great brakes! The interior is very good, with restored black glove leather seats as mentioned above, with no tears or issues (see photos) and a good dashboard and switches. The car comes with the original correct jack in the factory pouch. The car also has a nearly new stayfast/deluxe canvas top, that has been stored folded so the back window is a little creased. These creases should relax out in the sun. Windshield glass is excellent, likely replaced during the restoration since there are no stone chips. Steering rack is also a new NOS unit-precise and tight! A new Pertronix distributor was also installed with electronic ignition for improved reliability. As you can see in the video the car drives really well. And as you can see in the pictures, this car looks stunning. The car has just a few issues-- clutch engages high, but works great, no slipping or other anomalies-- minor clunk right front suspension-presume a worn bushing that would not be hard to fix (control arms are already new!)--some valve train noise only on cold startup, goes away promptly--the center section of nose has a very slight color mismatch, visible only in the right light between cowl and center portion when the nose is closed--(perhaps the nose was painted on a different day than the rest of the car?-- There is no evidence of any body work in the nose). I could not capture this in photos, it's that subtle. Also, clock not working and there is some wear in carpet on the side of the driver footwell. In summary, if you are looking for a perfect E-type this is not the car for you. If you instead want a stunning driver that turns heads everywhere for a lot less money than usual XKE asking prices, then give this one serious consideration! This is the perfect car for a collector who wants an e-type in their garage that will impress everyone, and is not so perfect that it can't be driven and enjoyed. You can spend a whole lot more on an XKE, but my experience is that the perfect cars just cause me too much anxiety. This car is just right. I've set a very reasonable reserve, in fact, it's easy to find E types for twice the reserve, or more--this one is a great value-- looks great, with a very nice interior and no rust. This is an affordable car that looks like a million bucks! If you are wanting to own one of these timeless classics but don't want to take out another mortgage, then this is a great car for you! Sold as is of course, as with any classic car, with no warranty or guarantees. Fly-in and drive this car home for a great fun road trip! Or if you prefer, we ship cars regularly in enclosed trailers, and can help you get the car delivered to your door. Feel free to email a request for a shipping quote. Please email any questions. And good luck bidding! |

Jaguar Land Rover might buy another luxury brand that it doesn't need
Mon, Sep 25 2017It seems that Jaguar Land Rover may be getting bigger in the near future. According to Bloomberg, the company is looking at acquiring some tech companies, and possibly yet another luxury car brand, provided that it fits with the current lineup of cars. On the surface, this makes some sense since Bloomberg reports that a whopping 78 percent of Tata Motors' revenue comes from luxury brands. And of course, any kind of tech acquisition could be useful considering the rapid development of electric and autonomous vehicles. But dig a little deeper, and a possible luxury brand acquisition just doesn't make sense for Jaguar Land Rover. The main reason for this is that the Jaguar and Land Rover brands have the luxury market thoroughly covered. Both brands offer full luxury lines from entry-level to high-end ( Discovery Sport to Range Rover on the Land Rover side, and XE to XJ on the Jaguar side). They also cater to every kind of luxury, from sporty vehicles such as the F-Type and SVR Land Rovers, to cushy luxury machines such as the XJ and Range Rover. So whether the company is competing with BMW or Mercedes, Jaguar and Land Rover have the bases covered. There aren't any other typical luxury brands that would actually add anything to the current lineup. In fact, adding another conventional luxury brand could actually result in the new brand poaching existing Jaguar and Land Rover buyers, rather than picking up new ones. What would make more sense for Jaguar Land Rover would be to pick up either a more mainstream brand, or an ultra-luxury marque. Neither Jaguar nor Land Rover has something that competes directly with the likes of Ford or Toyota in the mainstream game, or Rolls-Royce or Bentley at the top of the luxury heap. Picking up a brand in one of these segments would allow JLR and Tata Motors to actually expand offerings and pick up more sales, rather than having an internal competitor. What path would be ideal? Probably going even farther upmarket. Supercar makers and ultra-luxury brands continue to sell well, and there's the potential for significant profit by layering on features and content to existing platforms. Perhaps the best possibility for a high-end complement to Jaguar Land Rover would be Aston Martin. Not only does it have a strong reputation and line-up, it also could handle both supercars and luxury sedans, thanks to its Lagonda sub brand. Of course it would require Aston Martin to be receptive to a purchase.
Jaguar C-X75 and Aston Martin DB10 spied drifting during Spectre shoot
Fri, Feb 27 2015Based on the cars alone, the 24th James Bond film, Spectre, is set to be one of the biggest and most impressive in the long-lived franchise. While we're stuck waiting until November to see the automotive extravaganza on the big screen, a lucky bystander managed to catch two of the movie's four-wheeled stars filming on the streets of Rome. Italian YouTuber Marchettino, well known for his videos from Ferrari's Fiorano test track, caught the video of the Aston Martin DB10 and Jaguar C-X75 filming in the dark of the Roman night, with the Aston sliding its way around a turn and the Jag giving chase. Not surprisingly, the DB10's Vantage-derived V8 features prominently. This is, of course, not the first time news regarding this chase scene has graced our digital pages. Spectre star Daniel Craig sustained a minor injury in the course of this filming, after the DB10 he was riding in hit a pretty significant pothole. We've also caught 007's Aston filming in the UK. A car writer's year in new vehicles [w/video]
Thu, Dec 18 2014Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.
