Hyundai reveals a fourth, autonomous flavor of Ioniq
Thu, Nov 17 2016Hyundai added a fourth variant of the Ioniq line at this year's Los Angeles auto show, but this one isn't headed for production just yet. It's an autonomous concept that Hyundai is using to develop affordable, integrated hardware and software. Integrating all the hardware is something Hyundai is quite proud of, particularly the positioning of the lidar system in the front bumper. Hyundai says moving the lidar gear to the bumper allows the Ioniq "to look like any other car on the road and not a high school science project." We wonder if that statement was directed to Ford and its autonomous Fusion prototypes. The three lidar sensors are combined with a variety of other systems aboard the autonomous Ioniq. A number of the sensors are already going to be installed on production Ioniqs, including the radar for the car's Smart Cruise Control and the lane-keep assist cameras. The car's blind-spot radar will also be used for lane changes. Hyundai says by using these existing parts, implementing autonomous technology should be simpler and cheaper. These standard Ioniq sensors are all supplemented with a GPS antenna, high-definition mapping data, and a three-camera system installed just behind the windshield for detecting pedestrians, lane markings, and traffic signals. The car isn't just for show either. Hyundai has three of the autonomous Ioniqs testing in South Korea, alongside a pair of autonomous hydrogen fuel cell Tucsons. The company will also bring two autonomous Ioniqs to the 2017 Consumer Electronic Show. The cars will be there to give rides to the media. 2016 Hyundai Tucson comes to Geneva with long-awaited redesign
Wed, Mar 4 2015As one of the oldest vehicles in Hyundai's lineup, it was only a matter of time before the compact Tucson was given a redesign. Now, at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, we're getting a first-person look at the next-generation model as it prepares to do battle in an increasingly important market. While the last-generation Tucson was an ambassador of Hyundai's early "fluidic sculpture" design language, this new model shares the sharper, more aggressive lines of last year's Intrado Concept. A hexagonal grille is front and center, while the large headlights bleed into the front fenders. As we covered in our original post, the broad, flat hood is reminiscent of the Santa Fe, while the tail looks to the Genesis for its taillight design. Ample attention has also been paid to the cabin, although admittedly, the last Tucson's interior aged rather well. The Geneva show car features handsome red leather seats that contrast nicely with the black dash and silver accents. The cabin layout itself, meanwhile, isn't unlike what's found on the new Sonata; it's clean, logical and easy to figure out. Take a look at our full gallery of live images from the car's Geneva Motor Show Debut. THE ALL-NEW TUCSON 17/02/15 All-New Tucson represents significant step forward for Hyundai New model follows one million Hyundai SUV sales in Europe, over 116,600 in the UK Bold and athletic exterior creates unique appearance Refined interior combines elegance with ergonomics and generous cabin space Convenience and connectivity features tailored to customer needs including New Navigation with TomTom Live services and seven-year free subscription Comprehensive active and passive safety technologies Wide choice of engines; power range from 115 PS to 184 PS All models for Europe to be built in Europe High Wycombe, 17 February 2015 – With its worldwide public debut just weeks away at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the All-New Hyundai Tucson is set to redefine the Hyundai brand's C-SUV offering – featuring the highest levels of design, quality and technology which are poised to lead the segment. "The All-New Tucson is a bold new car that represents another leap forward for Hyundai," commented Tony Whitehorn, President & CEO, Hyundai Motor UK.
Hyundai i30 N: This is the 271-horsepower hot hatch we won't get
Thu, Jul 13 2017Hyundai has finally taken the wraps off of its very first N-badged car, the i30 N, along with many of the car's features and specs. Visually, the car has subtle changes including larger grilles in the front bumper, a front spoiler with red trim, black headlight housings, new side skirts, a larger rear wing, and a more sculpted rear bumper. The car can also be fitted with either 18- or 19-inch wheels. Inside you'll find heavily bolstered seats, blue buttons on the steering wheel for driving modes, blue stitching on the seats and trim, and aluminum pedals. Performance-wise, the i30 N should be pretty potent with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 271 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. That's nearly 20 more horsepower than the Focus ST, and about 50 horsepower more than the GTI Sport. The Focus ST does have 10 more pound-feet of torque, and the GTI Sport roughly matches the twist output. The i30 N channels its power through a six-speed manual transmission and electronic limited-slip differential to the front wheels only. View 6 Photos To make the most of all this power, Hyundai bestowed an array of electronic aids. The sportier suspension features electronically adjustable shocks to improve ride or handling depending on preferences. An automatic rev matching system is included for flawless, smooth, quick downshifts. The i30 N also has a variable exhaust system for quiet cruising or loud hustling. All of the above features along with steering feel and stability control sensitivity can be adjusted by selecting one of the car's five driving modes: Eco, Normal, Sport, N, and N Custom. There's even a launch control function. Unfortunately, we won't be getting Hyundai's hot hatch here in America, despite the fact that we already have a version of the regular i30 in the form of the Elantra GT. But we know that Hyundai is working on an N version of the Veloster, and we expect that N car to make the trip Stateside. It will probably have the same engine found in the i30 N, just in a funkier body. And if it has the same engine, we wouldn't be surprised if it comes with most of the i30 N's handling upgrades and gizmos.
