I've been the proud owner of this H1 for 4 yrs.  For me, it's been a great family vehicle--with an expansive interior, large roof rack, and towing capability.  It is well-maintained and reliable.  I've used it as a daily driver, a camper, and for several cross-country trips (e.g., Florida to Oregon pulling an Airstream camper). 

This H1 went thru an extensive upgrade in 2008, at Rubber Duck 4x4 (Hamilton, OH).  Upgrades included:

Below is a list of some of the maintenance items I accomplished during my ownership (4yrs and 19,000 miles):
  • Oil/filter/lube at least every 3000 miles
  • Geared hub oil changed 5 times (only required every 12,000 miles)
  • Differential oil changed twice (only req'd every 12,000 miles)
  • Transmission and transfer case serviced at 52,000 and 63,000 miles
  • New steering gear, and 4-wheel alignment
  • Installed new mud flaps (for towing camper)
  • All 4 halfshafts replaced at various times during past 4 yrs
  • New brakes pads and rotors at 49,300 miles
  • New serpentine belt and pulley at 52,000 miles
  • New vacuum pump at 52,400 miles
  • Remote PMD installed at 62,000 miles
  • Front CTIS lines replaced 62,000 miles
  • New dual batteries installed summer 2013
  • Turbo flex pipe replaced 63,000 miles
  • New transmission front seal (and new billet torque converter while transmission was pulled) at 63,200 miles

General Condition:
Nearly everything on this H1 works as it should. H1s often have an inoperative Central Tire Inflation (CTIS) System. This one works well, allowing the driver to inflate/deflate tires with the push of a button. The remote key fobs (2) lock and unlock all doors. The upgraded AC system blows cold, and heats well in winter. The front seats are both heated. The windshield is heated. The 7-blade RV-style electrical connection works well, including the trailer brake control. The engine block heater works. All glow plugs are working. All windows and door locks operate smoothly. All doors close and latch properly. All window and door seals are in excellent condition, with no leaks. All lights work, including the under-hood trouble light. Brakes work well, and evenly. (The rear brakes have lots of pad left; the front pads probably have 10,000 miles left). Steering works smoothly, with no vibrations. You can steer with one finger. The Goodyear MT/R 37x12.5x17LT tires have rarely been off-road. They are approx 50% compared to new. Wheels are factory 17-inch 1-piece aluminum, with CTIS quick-disconnects. Cruise control works smoothly. All 4-wheel drive components are in working order. The Warn winch works well, and includes a switch on the console enabling the driver to change the engine idle speeds, for faster recovery. 

Comsetically, the silver metallic paint looks awesome.  There are minor scratches and chips, but nothing that draws attention. H1s often have a corrosion problem along the seam below the rear windows, where aluminum is mated to steel.  This H1 is no different, as there are minor rusting points along that seam (see picture).  However, it does not extend into the interior. The seats, carpeting, and floorboards are in great condition. There are no rips or tears.  

I routinely get between 12 and 14 mpg.  I've gotten as much as 14.5 on cross-country highway trips.  

Things that aren't working quite right:
  • The two cigarette lighters at the top of the front console are blowing their fuse, probably due to a shorted wire. However, there's an additional 12V power outlet next to the radio, for charging cell phones and such.
  • The dome light doesn't come on when opening the right front passenger door.
  • The front CTIS will sometimes leak--but not more than 1 psi per day.  I periodically use the CTIS button to re-inflate.  

Leaks: there is a slow oil leak at the rear differential passenger side output shaft seal.  It leaks a few drops per week on my garage floor during hot months. I have a new output hub (that attaches to the brake rotor) which can be installed during the next brake pad replacement, along with a new seal. There is also a slow leak at the power steering pump, but not enough to cause dripping. I've added some Lucas sealer that may stop the leak altogether. The geared hubs have leaked on occasion. Most H1 owners have this problem, but it is often fixed by using Lucas hub oil. (I have 4 quarts sitting on my shelf ready to be used at next hub oil change).  

Owning an H1:
While H1s generally require more maintenance than a standard truck, it is very manageable (and even pleasurable) if you buy a truck that hasn't been neglected. There is an army of dedicated H1 enthusiasts who can advise you on how to operate, fix, or upgrade every part of an H1. Many H1 owners simply log onto one of the H1 websites whenever they have a problem--even if out on the road--and usually get an answer back within minutes.  Bottom line is that nobody should be too concerned about H1 maintenance if they start with a good truck and have basic maintenance skills (and a willingness to learn).  For most H1 owners, that's part of the great satisfaction of owning these vehicles.  Also, I will be providing an H1 Maintenance manual on CD…developed by Dave Breggin (owner of BlueHummer Outfitters). Dave can also provide all supplies and parts, including OEM parts from AM General.

Also, note that the upgrades on this H1 significantly reduce the probability of costly repairs.  The AC system was upgraded to the better system found in H1s manufactured after mid-1997. The "Cool Kit" recirculation system cools the #7 and #8 cylinders, fixing a design flaw that resulted in overheating, in some engines. The remote PMD fixes a troublesome PMD location from the factory that caused units to suddenly fail due to heat.  The 4x4 upgrades, transfer case rebuild, and undercarriage protection reduce the probability of off road equipment problems.  The upgraded computer system, wastegate, and exhaust means that performance is there when you need it, without further expense.  Also, the differential centering kit means that you only need 1 type of halfshaft, instead of the 3 required without this upgrade.

Junkyard Gem: 2006 Hummer H3 SUV

After General Motors bought the rights to the Hummer brand from AM General in 1999, it continued to sell the civilianized versions of the military HMMWV that was made famous after appearing in the heavily televised Operation Desert Storm. The Hummer H1 (as it became known) never sold in large numbers, but The General decided to make everyman Hummers based on existing GM truck platforms. The Silverado-based H2 came first, debuting as a 2003 model, followed by the Colorado-based H3 as a 2006 model. Here's one of those first-year H3s, found in a Denver self-service car graveyard recently. Now it's time for some Hummer brand history. After the American Motors Corporation bought Kaiser Jeep in 1970, it spun off the fleet and military parts of that operation into a new company called AM General. The best-known AM General products for many years were the Jeep DJ Dispatchers, generally called "Mail Jeeps," and they were sold all the way through 1984. 1984 was also the year that the United States Army put the first AM General-built High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV, which soldiers pronounced "Humvee" at first but eventually adopted the "Hummer" nickname). Around the same time, militarized VW-powered sand rails were being purchased from Chenowth by Uncle Sam. After Arnold Schwarzenegger convinced AM General to build civilianized Hummers, sales of the not-so-civilized brute that became the H1 began in 1992. The H2 and H3 had the misfortune to be launched just before the Great Recession hit and fuel prices went crazy, while a couple of overseas conflicts that were much less popular than Gulf War I made grim headlines and reduced the street appeal of combat-inspired civilian wheels. The H1 got the axe in 2006; GM tried and failed to sell the Hummer brand to a Chinese manufacturer in 2010, as it struggled through Chapter 11 bankruptcy, finally giving up and killing the brand alongside Pontiac, Saturn and Saab. Then the Hummer name was revived in 2022 as an electron-fueled GMC model, and you can buy a 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV right now (though GMC's website warns of "LIMITED AVAILABILITY" in big red letters, so you might have a hard time actually taking delivery of one). The final 2010 H3s were built for Avis at Shreveport Operations, which itself shut down two years later.

2024 GMC Hummer EV 3X Pickup gets a range boost

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV 3X Pickup is getting an update for more range in the new model year. Instead of 355 miles, the new long-range version of the 3X Pickup will go 381 miles. Note that you need to option the 24-module battery pack to get this range figure. However, if you go for the standard 20-module battery pack, GMC says range is improved for 2024, as well. The GM-estimated figure goes from 329 miles for 2023, all the way up to 359 miles for 2024. You should also note that acceleration times are different depending on battery pack, too, as the longer-range model does 0-60 mph in 3.0 seconds versus the 3.5 seconds of the standard range version. The other big choice you’ll need to make is whether or not you tack on the “Extreme Off-Road Package.” This adds 18-inch wheels wrapped by 35-inch mud-terrain tires, four addiitonal underbody camera views for a total of 18, front e-locker with rear virtual locking differentials, heavy-duty ball-spline half-shafts along with more skid plates and underbody shielding. WeÂ’ll also note that range suffers as a result of this equipment. GM only provides the range figure for the upgrade 24-module pack, and it goes down from 381 miles to 359 miles. GMC says the 2024 Hummer 3X Pickup will go on sale to reservation holders this fall and start at $106,945, including the destination charge. Related video:

GMC Hummer EV could have had the Chevrolet Avalanche's Midgate

One of the many rumors swirling around the GMC Hummer EV claimed the truck would resurrect the Midgate inaugurated by the original Chevrolet Avalanche. Although we now know there's no way to fully knock down the partition between the cab and the cargo box, the firm revealed the rumor wasn't entirely false. "There was [a Midgate] early on. We opted for the functionality of the drop glass in the back. With the package layout and things like that, it was not advantageous to pursue that one. And, the five-foot bed was kind of the industry standard in regards to price of entry in that segment," explained John Mack, the Hummer's exterior design management, during an interview with Muscle Car & Trucks. The Hummer will go on sale with a five-foot box, and it doesn't sound like a longer bed will be available, so a modern version of the Midgate would have made the model more versatile by giving users the ability to fold down the partition behind the rear seats to carry bulky items, like plywood and ATVs. It's a feature that would have inevitably made the truck more complicated to build, however, because it adds moving parts that need to be sealed. Hinges, seals, and latches in turn add weight, and complexity almost always invites high manufacturing costs. As an electric pickup built with newly-developed components, the Hummer already has enough of each. Motorists who need to carry something that's significantly longer than the cargo box aren't entirely out of luck. As Mack pointed out, the rear window drops into the partition, so owners will have the ability to haul surfboards, lumber, or anything else that's relatively long and reasonably thin by simply pushing a switch. Alternatively, the only thing limiting cargo space when the roof comes off is the sky — or, depending on where you live, bridges. Mack didn't reveal when the Midgate was dropped. GMC launched the Hummer project in April 2019, and it previously released early design sketches that show how the truck transitioned from a sketch to a prototype. As of writing, nothing suggests the Midgate will make a comeback in the near future on any member of the General Motors portfolio. It was introduced in 2001 on the first-generation Chevrolet Avalanche, which went on sale in the United States for the 2002 model year. It later spread to Cadillac's luxed-up variant of the truck, the Escalade EXT, and to the short-lived GMC Envoy XUV.
