Vehicle Overview

Introduced for 2000, the no-holds-barred sports car is roughly similar to BMW’s Z3 in size, but the S2000 has a style and personality all its own, highlighted by its energetic powertrain. Best known for economical and reliable family cars, Honda has offered sporty models before, but this is the company’s first true sports car. It evolved from the SSM concept car that first appeared at the Tokyo Auto Show in 1995 and also is the first Honda with rear-wheel drive. In addition to providing an additional source of sales, it establishes a clear link with Honda’s racing heritage, which includes several championships in Formula One and Championship Auto Racing Teams competition.
Changes for 2001 include the addition of an in-trunk emergency release, a rear wind deflector, clock, and floormats.

Exterior

Styled in the traditional sports car mode but with a crisp, angular look, the S2000 displays a wedge-shaped profile that stands apart from other roadsters. At 162 inches overall, the S2000 is more than 6 inches longer than the Mazda Miata; measuring 50.6 inches to its rooftop, the roadster is 2 inches taller than the Miata. The convertible has a power-operated top, but its rear window is made of plastic rather than glass. A molded top cover is included.

Integrated roll bars sit behind the twin seats. A clear acrylic wind deflector that mounts between the bars helps to reduce turbulence while on the move. High-intensity-discharge headlamps and 16-inch Bridgestone Potenza tires on alloy wheels are standard.

Interior

There’s no space behind the front bucket seats for anything other than a sliver of luggage. This is strictly a two-seater, with body-hugging leather-trimmed bucket seats. Storage space is at a premium, with a tiny bin between the seats, a single cupholder and a small trunk.

Standard equipment includes electric power steering, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, air conditioning, cruise control, remote keyless entry, a CD player, tachometer, digital clock, an immobilizer theft-deterrent system, and power windows, locks and mirrors. The instrument cluster features digital and graphic displays, adapted from those used in racing cars.

Under the Hood

Beneath the hood sits a 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder VTEC engine with dual-outlet exhaust that’s made to rev as high as 9,000 rpm — a limit far beyond most cars on the market; it yields 153 pounds-feet of torque at 7,500 rpm. Coupled to a six-speed-manual transmission, the S2000 leaps past its milder-mannered stablemates when pushing the gas pedal to the floor.

Dual front airbags and all-disc antilock brakes are standard.

Driving Impressions

If you think you know what a Honda feels like to drive, you’re in for a shock when you slip behind the wheel of an S2000. The differences begin when you try to start the engine. Don’t bother twisting the ignition key in its lock; instead, you’ll need to press the red starter button to fire up the potent four-cylinder — a setup borrowed from Porsche and other classic sports cars of the past.

At full throttle, you’ll hear a deep, aggressive growl from the engine. Once it reaches 5,000 rpm or so, the S2000 lunges forward like a virtual rocket, its engine screaming passionately through each step of the close-ratio six-speed gearbox. As if acceleration prowess weren’t enough, razor-sharp steering, disciplined handling talents and athletic cornering ability blend with excellent braking capacity to produce a driving experience that approaches racing car level. It’s really no surprise since the S2000 looks as if it’s ready to whip onto a racetrack somewhere.

Honda HR-V could spawn Acura variant

Thu, Feb 5 2015

We've been saying it for months now, but the compact CUV is the next big thing. Everyone, and we mean everyone, is at least considering getting in on the action, if they aren't already actively designing or selling, and that's true whether they're a premium or mainstream automaker. That, of course, includes Acura, whose parent company, Honda, has a compact CUV of its own coming to market very, very soon. With the arrival of the Fit-based HR-V, that begs the question of whether the near-premium marque will join this burgeoning segment. The idea of building a car below the company's entry level CUV, the RDX, is an appealing one to Honda Executive Vice President John Mendel, who called it "potentially the only place you could go," and would occupy the "white space" the company is looking to fill. While we might chuckle about the idea of a luxurious, Fit-based CUV, it's fair to say it could do well for Acura. It could certainly provide a foil to the very hot selling Buick Encore, and may even capture some sales from the luxuriously outfitted Jeep Renegade Limited/Fiat 500X Lounge. It remains to be seen, though, if Acura could build an HR-V capable of tangling with the new entries from Lexus, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Honda MC-? will use solar-powered chargers in 'micro' EV tests

Mon, Feb 3 2014

Honda is envisioning what it calls a CO2-free society and, not surprisingly, it's a rather sunny one, in one Japanese city, at least. The Japanese automaker is kicking off a test program with the micro-electric-vehicle that will use power generated via photovoltaic energy collected and stored at EV charging stations. Yes, the big old sun will power those little-bitty MC-? cars. MC-? is shorthand for "Micro Computer Beta" and the car is certainly an appropriate vehicle for these tests. The car is 98 inches long (about eight inches shorter than a Smart ForTwo) and has a 43-mile-per-hour top speed as well as an electric motor that delivers a meager eight horsepower. The car is designed to meet Europe's quadricycle regulations and has a 50-mile single-charge range. No word on if or when it'll go into production, of course, but Honda and Toshiba are working with Japan's Miyakojima City on the project, with Toshiba responsible for building three solar-powered EV-charging stations. The Japanese automaker unveiled the latest incarnation of the 1+1 tandem-seating-arrangement MC-? last fall. You can see our "Quick Spin" impressions of the model here and read Honda's press release below. Honda Begins Experimental Test-driving of MC-? Micro-sized EV Using Renewable Energy TOKYO, Japan, January 28, 2014 - Jointly with Miyakojima City and Toshiba Corporation, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. began experimental test-driving of the MC-?, Honda's micro-sized EV, using photovoltaic (PV) energy as part of the Miyakojima City Small-sized Electromotive Mobility Project*1. Through this experimental program, Honda will operate an environmentally-responsible micro-sized EV using renewable energy, and work together with the local community to explore the possibility of a CO2-free society. In November 2013, Honda began separate field tests jointly conducted with Kumamoto Prefecture, Saitama City and Miyakojima City using the MC-?. For the field tests in Miyakojima City, as a part of the initiative as an environmentally-responsible model city, the feasibility of the introduction and utilization of small-sized electromotive mobility products and electricity supply facilities are being verified. For this particular driving experiment in the city using renewable energy, the MC-? will be charged from three new PV recharging stations newly built by Toshiba.

Pedestrian deaths increase; cell-phone distractions may be culprit

Fri, Aug 14 2015

In Philadelphia, city officials are running a public-safety campaign that implores road users to simply "Put. Phone. Down." In Florida, a similar advertisement reminds people, "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow." What's unusual about these messages is that they target pedestrians. Amid widespread concern about distracted drivers on American roads, there's a growing body of research that suggests distracted walking is equally problematic. Pedestrians engrossed in their phone, text or Tinder conversations are stepping into intersections without so much as a glance at oncoming traffic. That may be one reason pedestrian deaths are increasing. They jumped 15 percent in a five-year period between 2009 and 2013, according to a study released this week by the Governors Highway Safety Association, with 4,735 killed in 2013. In the same time, overall traffic fatalities have fallen by 3.4 percent. Pedestrian deaths now comprise 14 percent of all traffic fatalities, and approximately one pedestrian death occurs every two hours in the United States. Alcohol is still a top culprit – it's involved in 49 percent of pedestrian deaths on either the part of driver or walker – but as cities rush to implement a wave of slower speed limits, wider sidewalks and street medians to counter pedestrian deaths, there's new focus on holding pedestrians accountable for eliminating distractions. "Undoubtedly, motorists are responsible for many pedestrian accidents," said a July newsletter from the National Motorists Association. "But pedestrians must also assume responsibility for their own safety." This week's report from the GHSA cites growing research that suggests pedestrians aren't yet doing their part. At 20 high-risk intersections, 26 percent of pedestrians wore headphones, 15 percent were texting and 13 percent talked on the phone, according to a 2013 University of Georgia study. More recently, a William Paterson University study issued earlier this year found more than 25 percent of New York City pedestrians were distracted by either their phones or headphones. Half of the pedestrians who crossed with a "Don't Walk" signal were distracted. "Getting smashed at the bar? Don't get smashed walking home." - Minnesota public-safety campaign.
