Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept is coming to reality
Tue, Apr 4 2023New York Auto Show week is kicking off with a concept from Genesis that is going to find its way onto showroom floors in the near future, Genesis President and CEO Jose Munoz confirmed in New York. It's the Genesis GV80 Coupe, and it's the classic coupe-ification of an SUV we've seen time and time again from BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and more. And we have to say, it's quite handsome, particularly in its vivid orange paint. Get the latest 2023 New York International Auto Show updates from our live blog. Most of the attention is on the chopped-down rear, but Genesis didn't leave the nose of the GV80 alone. For the Coupe Concept, the fascia was redesigned with new, dark grille inserts, bigger intakes, and a quartet of extra slots under the main grille. The headlights appear to have been slightly slimmed down, too. In profile, the lowered, fastback roofline is quite obvious. It still has a similar window outline to the full SUV, making it look a little like someone grabbed the top of the hatch and just pushed everything down and in slightly. But it still looks quite well-proportioned and sleek. Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept View 12 Photos The rear actually features more changes than just the roofline. Additional spoilers at the top and trailing edges of the hatch have been added for a little sporty flare. It also adopts the full-width double-bar taillights from the Genesis X concept cars. Inside, the interior is pretty familiar, except for some overtly sporty changes. Four racing seats with a sort of orange plaid stitching pattern replace the conventional pieces. The backs of the seats are painted in the same orange as the exterior. It gets a three-spoke steering wheel, and behind the rear seats is a serious-looking chassis brace. Genesis didn't give any specifications or estimates of when we might see a production version of the GV80 Coupe. But it's coming, and coming soon. Seemingly every other luxury brand has at least one SUV coupe in the line, if not more, and have for years. They clearly sell. Genesis was hinting that this design is centered more on performance, and that shows in the styling. That also means that it may get a different powertrain lineup than the regular GV80. We wouldn't be surprised if the 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder was dropped, making the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 standard equipment. There might even be a hotter engine on offer. Whatever it launches with, it should be some serious competition to the luxury establishment.
Genesis' decision to build the Electrified GV70 in America is a sign of things to come
Tue, Mar 21 2023As Steely Dan famously sang, they call Alabama the Crimson Tide. Here in Montgomery, we’re knee-deep in a Green Tide thatÂ’s transforming the business of building and selling cars. The high-style Genesis Electrified GV70 emerging from Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) is the first Genesis built outside South Korea. ItÂ’s only the second made-in-America EV from a foreign-based automaker, after the Volkswagen ID.4 whose Tennessee production kicked off in July. Get ready for many more. Spurred by the Inflation Reduction Act — whose final interpretations and outcomes remain in Washingtonian flux — automakers foreign and domestic are scrambling to onshore EV-and-battery production to boost American jobs and security, as a condition to securing lucrative tax incentives for manufacturers and consumers. Beginning in 2024, qualifying for EV credits may even require sourcing a hefty percentage of minerals and other battery materials from America or approved trade partners, a list that conspicuously does not include China or Russia. As things stand, that sticking point could make a vast number of 2024 EVs ineligible for purchase credits; though leasing a vehicle may still earn dealers a $7,500 commercial credit that they could pass along to consumers, as most currently do for EV lessees. The electric version of GenesisÂ’ most-popular SUV is the avatar of Hyundai MotorÂ’s $10 billion American EV investment, which is expected to foster up to 8,000 good-paying jobs. Even thatÂ’s a fraction of what Atlas Public Policy estimates to be $128 billion in industry-wide investment in AmericaÂ’s EV, battery and recycling capacity through 2030 alone. HyundaiÂ’s planned onshore footprint includes a new battery factory northwest of Atlanta, and a $5.5 billion EV factory near Savannah that aims to produce Hyundai, Kia and Genesis EVs beginning in 2025. Beginning that year, Genesis says every new model introduced will be an EV, with no fossil-fuel option. And Genesis plans to phase out gasoline-powered models entirely by 2030, a similar timeline to luxury brands including Volvo and Cadillac. In Alabama, where Hyundai also builds the Elantra, Sonata, Santa Fe and Santa Cruz, an Electrified GV70 is hoisted onto a lift for the final stop on its 16-hour assembly journey.
2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 First Drive Review: Put this EV on your short list
Tue, Mar 21 2023ATLANTA, Ga. — ThereÂ’s something interesting about the Genesis Electrified GV70, and even though itÂ’s plainly obvious, itÂ’s still worth pointing out: its skin and much of its chassis are basically shared with the regular Genesis GV70. Whereas most other EVs employ a dedicated platform intended to take full advantage of a battery-powered carÂ’s inherent differences, Genesis engineers decided to employ a vehicle architecture that can accommodate both internal combustion and electrification. This isnÂ’t entirely unique to Genesis. The BMW i4, for instance, shares its modular Cluster Architecture platform with a slew of gas-fueled vehicles. But itÂ’s noteworthy nonetheless, due in no small part to the much-heralded collection of other EVs in the Hyundai Motor CompanyÂ’s portfolio: the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6, Kia EV6 and GenesisÂ’ own GV60, all of which use a dedicated electric chassis known internally as E-GMP. Instead of simply making additional models off E-GMP, Genesis has seemingly invested in a second, bespoke vehicle architecture for itself. The Electrified GV70 is a couple inches longer than the GV60 but has a wheelbase thatÂ’s exactly an inch shorter. The 70 has a little over a cubic foot more passenger space overall, but less front and rear legroom. The 60Â’s steeply raked roofline cuts into cargo capacity, leaving the 70 to take the stowage crown with 56.5 cubic feet (compared to 54.7) behind the first row and 28.7 behind the second row (compared to 24). Those numbers make the EV version a smidge smaller inside than the gas-powered GV70, in case youÂ’re wondering. Intriguingly, a look at the specifications between the GV60 and GV70 reveals thereÂ’s even more to the story. Both vehicles use a battery pack with a rated capacity of 77.4-kilowatt-hours, and the Electrified GV70Â’s 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque match those of the GV60 Performance model (the ponies can similarly be upped to 483 for 10 seconds at a time using the “Boost” button located on the steering wheel). The five-stage regenerative braking and highest I-Pedal modes carry over as well. Turns out thereÂ’s more sharing going on between the two vehicles than it seems at first blush. Whatever the reasoning behind the decision to share some bits and pieces between models but not others, weÂ’re quite pleased with the results.
Editors’ Picks February 2023 | Audi RS 3, electric G80 and a longtime favorite
Wed, Mar 1 2023In this month’s set of EditorsÂ’ Picks, we see a wide variety of vehicles earn our recommended status. The Audi RS 3 is a truly stellar sedan with a killer engine, great handling and still enough comfort for daily use. Genesis finds its way onto the list again with its electric version of the G80 midsize sedan, and VolvoÂ’s XC90 still charms after all these years. In case you missed our previous Editors' Picks posts, hereÂ’s a quick refresher on whatÂ’s going on here. We rate all the new cars we drive with a 1-10 score. Cars that are exemplary in their respective segments get an EditorsÂ’ Pick designation. Those are the ones weÂ’d recommend to our friends, family and anybody whoÂ’s curious and asks the question. The list that youÂ’ll find below consists of every car we rated in January that earned an EditorsÂ’ Pick. 2023 Audi RS 3 Quick take: The Audi RS 3 keeps the passion alive with a superb sounding 5-cylinder engine and a torque-vectoring rear differential that massively ups the handling fun. Its interior is a little bland, but it's still a handsome Audi on the outside. Score: 8.0 What it competes with: Mercedes-AMG CLA 45, BMW M240i, Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, VW Golf R Pros: Epic engine sound, fun AWD system, great handling and acceleration, attractive exterior styling Cons: Interior doesn't pop, expensive for its size From the editors: Road Test Editor Zac Palmer — "If you love a special engine, the Audi RS 3 is a car for you. Few powertrains sound and feel as special as the 5-cylinder engine in the RS 3, and the ferocity with which it accelerates will have you laughing your head off with every pull. The sheer performance out of this little machine is extraordinary, and I'd recommend it to anybody shopping for a small, luxury sports car daily. All that said, I wish Audi could've sorted out better steering and a suitable interior. As-is, both of those factors are negatives in a car that is almost all upside." In-depth analysis: 2023 Audi RS 3 First Drive Review: To hell with business cases  2023 Volvo XC90 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge View 15 Photos Quick take: The XC90 may be old now, but key updates and a timeless design ensure it's competitive as ever. The Scandinavian interior design appeal has never faded, and now the Google-based infotainment system is fresh and snappy. Even the Recharge PHEV is an awesome alternative with great range and strong electric motor.
Genesis recalls over 65,000 cars for potential exploding seat belt pretensioners
Mon, Feb 27 2023Genesis has issued a recall that applies to over 65,000 units of the G80, GV60, GV70 and GV80 built between 2020 and 2023. The vehicles included in the campaign are fitted with front seat belt pretensioners that can explode in an accident and pelt shrapnel into the cabin. Assigned recall number 23V-094 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the campaign includes 9,720 units of the G80 built between July 2020 and January 2023, 940 units of the GV60 built between February and December 2022, 21,917 units of the GV70 built between March 2021 and January 2023 and 32,940 units of the GV80 (pictured) built between July 2020 and December 2022. Genesis estimates that the defect is present in about 1% of the 65,517 cars it's recalling, but the issue is potentially serious. The cars that are part of the campaign are equipped with pyrotechnic-type seat belt pretensioners that can "deploy abnormally in certain crashes due to [an] over-pressurization of the pretensioner pipe," according to the manufacturer. In turn, this problem can send "metal fragments" flying across the cabin, which increases the risk of an injury. Genesis parent company Hyundai isn't aware of any injuries or fatalities, however. It sounds like there's no way to predict whether a pretensioner will explode. Genesis points out that "the potential for this condition is dependent on vehicle characteristics, pretensioner load limiter specification, airbag control unit logic, and crash duration and severity." Owners of affected cars will be notified by mail starting in April 2023. They'll be asked to bring their vehicle to the nearest dealer so that a technician can secure the seat belt pretensioner's micro gas generator and delivery pipe with a cap to prevent abnormal deployment. This isn't the first time that Hyundai has issued a recall to address exploding seat belt pretensioners. In November 2021, the firm issued recall number 21V-796 to replace the part in 978 units of the Elantra, Venue, GV70, and GV80. Genesis stresses that GV70s and GV80s whose pretensioners were replaced as part of the last recall also need to have the new remedy completed. Elantra and Venue owners seemingly don't need to worry: over 300,000 cars built by Hyundai and sister company Kia have already been recalled to correct this problem. Genesis announces pricing for the Electrified GV70 SUV
Fri, Feb 17 2023Though it offers an EV on a dedicated electric platform, Genesis has done well with electrified versions of its internal combustion vehicles. The Electrified G80 is every bit as plush and compelling as its gas-powered counterpart, and Genesis recently announced the Electrified GV70. Pricing details are now available, and the starting MSRP is significantly steeper than the gas GV70. The Electrified GV70 is Genesis’ first vehicle to be assembled in the United States and its first to be built outside of South Korea. Its base price of $65,580 makes it roughly $20,000 more expensive than the gas-powered GV70 and around $6,000 more than the GV60, an EV that shares a platform with the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Though expensive, the Electrified GV70 brings plenty for the price. It comes standard with dual-160kW electric motors, a 77.4-kWh battery, 20-inch wheels, leather upholstery, wireless charging, a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, Genesis Digital Key, and a host of advanced safety features. All new Genesis models launched from 2025 will be electric, and the automaker has said its entire lineup will be electric by 2030. Like parent company Hyundai, Genesis will launch several new electric models in the next few years, including two cars and three other SUVs. The premium company will be the first within HyundaiÂ’s orbit to go electric, but the group aims to dethrone Tesla at the top of the EV sales rankings. Though still in single-digit market share territory, EVs have grown significantly in recent years. They now account for 6% of the total vehicle market in the United States, aided by high gas prices, federal incentives, and compelling new models. The federal government hopes to accelerate the growth further and wants 50% of new vehicles sold here to be electric by 2030. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. BMW tops Consumer Reports 2023 Brand Report Card
Thu, Feb 16 2023Feels like we wrote about Consumer Reports' 2022 Brand Report Car and 10 Top Picks a few weeks ago, but it was last April. So the mag is back with a ranked roster of 32 brands and 10 vehicles in four categories for your debating pleasure. Starting with the brands, last year's top three were Subaru, Mazda and BMW. This year, the Munich crew climbed two spots to win the prize thanks to "Superb road test scores and solid results in CR’s reliability and owner satisfaction surveys." Subaru narrowly fell to second, maintaining its four-year run in the top three. Mini, eighth last year, jumped five spots to get the last step on the podium. The rest of the top 10 were Lexus (up one spot from last year), Honda (down one spot from last year), Toyota (up three), Genesis (up 12), Mazda (down six), Audi (down three) and Kia (up eight). The magazine and testing outfit says its Brand Report Card "[reveals] which automakers are producing the most well-performing, safe, and reliable vehicles based on CRÂ’s independent testing and member surveys," and that "Brands that rise to the top tend to have the most consistent performance across their model lineups." Last year's top 10 had six automakers from Japan, three from Germany (giving Mini credit for England), none from the U.S. or South Korea, and five luxury brands. This year's list counts five makes from Japan, two from Germany because Porsche fell out of the top ten, two from South Korea, still none from the U.S., and four luxury brands. Buick again ranked as the best domestic, dropping to 12th after being 11th last year. The big mover was Lincoln, its 10-place jump up to 16th attributed to better reliability from the Corsair and Nautilus. Tesla's improved overall reliability saw it climb six spots to 17th. Dodge climbed one spot to 15th. Jeep got out of the penalty box in last to come second-to-last. Land Rover fell three places into the penalty spot. CR's top 10 vehicle models The 10 Top Picks list is practically a new list. Only two holdovers made it to 2023, those being the Subaru Forester and Kia Telluride.

The ravishing Genesis X Convertible Concept is going into production
Tue, Jan 31 2023The Genesis X Concept 2+2 grand tourer that debuted in March 2021 began as an internal design exercise. We said then that Genesis needs to build it. Over the next 18 months, we were treated to follow-ups in the X Speedium Coupe Concept, a shooting brake with more accommodations made for back-seaters, and the X Convertible Concept shown at last year's L.A. Auto Show. Seeing the droptop variant was like finding a gorgeous new example of a species going extinct, the Genesis (conceptually) replenishing an ecosystem that once included the Mercedes-Benz S-Class convertible and Jaguar XK but is now down to the BMW 8 Series, and will soon see the return of the Maserati GranCabrio. Now Automotive News has been told by Peter Lanzavecchia, chairman of Genesis' national dealer advisory council, that the X Convertible Concept is going into production. Lanzavecchia said that Luc Donckerwolke, chief creative officer for the entire Hyundai Motor Group, gave dealers the news at the body's annual meeting. The dealer body chairman told AN dealers have been trying to get a "performance GT coupe" from the automaker, and have been buzzing about the idea of one entering production "even before Donckerwolke addressed dealers about its planned arrival." It's not clear if this means the X grand tourer with the fixed roof is also going into production, or if the X Convertible with its folding hardtop is the only one headed to market. We'd like to see both, but either way, hooray for us. As we would have expected from seeing the first car in the trilogy, the convertible is a flagship. Even knowing that, though, Lanzavecchia's comment to AN that "I don't know if it's going to be over $200,000 or $300,000, but I guarantee we're going see a lot of Bentley Continental convertible trade-ins on that when it comes to our showrooms," is unexpected. The 2023 G90 sedan that starts at about $90,000 is the most expensive model the brand offers here at the moment. He added that "sales volume might be extremely limited." Based on these rough outlines, we're talking about South Korea's version of the Cadillac Celestiq — luxury brand wants to make an emphatic point about being A Luxury Brand with an EV in a segment it has never played in that costs more than double it's most expensive traditional offering. Bring it.
