Next-gen Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra may use carbon fiber

It's been generally accepted that the next generation of full-size GM trucks will use some sort of strong, lightweight material for the beds while retaining steel for the cab. While aluminum seems like the most obvious choice, according to Automotive News, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra will incorporate both aluminum and carbon fiber in their beds. The publication cites sources from within GM, though it seems the introduction of this comparatively exotic material mix is still a few years off. While carbon fiber is both stronger and lighter than steel and aluminum, it takes significantly more time and money to produce, essentially relegating the material to small-volume cars. The main benefit for trucks is the resulting reduction in weight to improve fuel economy without sacrificing the tough, rugged capabilities truck buyers expect. The Ford F-150 made the switch to aluminum for the 2015 model year and it's proved highly successful. It seemed like it was only a matter of time before the competition followed suit. Automotive News says that the next-gen trucks will launch with aluminum beds and that it will take a couple of years before we'll see any carbon fiber incorporated into the design. Even then, only look for the composite material on higher-trim models, with a trickle down to lower-spec trucks possible further in the future. In 2011, GM announced it was working with Japan-based Teijin Limited on a carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic. There's a good chance that material's introduction will be on trucks. Truck Trend names GMC Sierra Denali 2016 PTOTY

Citing its best-in-class power, its amenities, and technology, Truck Trend magazine has named the GMC Sierra Denali its 2016 Pickup Truck of the Year. Seven "all-new or significantly revised pickup trucks" were invited to compete, and out of the seven tested categories the Sierra won interior, functionality, and "Empirical," and scored second in highway testing and exterior looks. It beat the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country and Colorado Z71 diesel, GMC Canyon SLT diesel, Nissan Titan XD Pro4X, Ram 1500 Rebel, and Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road. In the mag's 43rd annual Four-Wheeler of the Year award, the Range Rover SVR claimed the crown. The Sierra got refreshed this year with new front-end styling with HID headlamps and LED accents, tech features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless phone charging, and optional convenience features like a remote locking tailgate and power articulated assist steps. The big powertrain upgrade was availability of the 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8s with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This is the second time Truck Trend has conferred a PTOTY award, the Ford F-150 walking away with the silverware last year. The nod to the Sierra comes after sister publication Motor Trend named the 2016 Chevy Colorado with the Duramax diesel engine its Truck of the Year. One-off 2022 GMC Jimmy shows the convertible SUV that could have been

GMC is seemingly content to let the sixth-generation Ford Bronco take on the Jeep Wrangler on its own. The company left this segment of the market decades ago, but an Arkansas-based builder named Flat Out Autos is bringing the Jimmy back for the 2022 SEMA show. The modern-day Jimmy largely mirrors the Sierra 1500 that it's based on from the tip of the front bumper to the b-pillars. Beyond that, Flat Out Autos added redesigned quarter panels, removed the partition between the cargo box and the cabin, and installed rear seats. It also developed a removable, body-colored hardtop that brings the truck's silhouette in line with the second-generation Jimmy's. Out back, the versatile MultiPro tailgate remains, and the Jimmy keeps the Sierra's rear bumper with a step integrated into each corner. All told, the conversion looks surprisingly good. We bet GMC could sell a lot of these if it decided to jump back into the segment. The interior is mostly Sierra fare, though the front seats tilt forward and carpet lines the cargo box and the inner part of the tailgate. Flat Out Autos hasn't released technical details, so there's no word on what the Jimmy is powered by. More details will presumably be announced in the weeks leading up to the 2022 SEMA show, which opens on November 1, and Flat Out Autos plans to build 25 units.
