Up for auction is my 1978 Ford Thunderbird Diamond Jubilee.  This car was ordered from Ford by a Ford exec for his retirement.  He drove it for several years and put very few miles on it.  On his passing his family sold it to a dealership where it went back into the showroom and sat as a museum piece for more than 15 years.  During that time it was used in a book by Alan H. Tast titled "Thunderbird, 50 Years"  detailing the history of the Ford Thunderbird.  There is a picture of the centerfold of this car in it and the book has been autographed by the photographer and author in 2004.  It changed hands a couple of times since then in its mostly original condition.   When I purchased it in 2008 I had to change out the original shocks and plug wires, spark plugs.  The PO had put dual exhaust and glass packs on this beauty and that was unacceptable.  I left the duals on but put a quiet muffler on it and shortened the tail pipe so that they weren't protruding beyond the bumper.  They now turn down just before the bumper and are largely out of sight.  The paint is very nice but cannot attest to original paint.  the interior has one very minor puncture blemish on the driver seat possibly by a pen.   The factory am/fm plays as it should and the rear speakers were replaced with a nice pair of Infinities that mount in the same location, no speaker grilles added to the package shelf.  All options are operable, power windows, power seat, power door locks, remote mirror, cruise control, power antenna, power trunk release and  seat release locks.  Headlight doors remain closed even after long period of not driving, nothing that came with the car is inoperable. The tires were replaced and have very little wear.  In the 5 + years I have owned this car it has probably seen less than 1000 miles per year.  She drives out extremely well, looks like new and runs smooth and quiet.  The doors open and close as they did from the factory with no sagging or wear on the hinges.  There are no rattles or squeaks when driving down the road in this car.  The AC was converted to 134 and blows cold.  The trunk looks like new and has several of the factory manual that will be included as well as the Ford Diamond Jubilee 75th anniversary Recipe Collection cook book.  Just some interesting kitch to be passed along with this car.  This car is immaculate and beautiful as well as reliable and extremely road worthy.  Please email with questions and I will send you my phone for any extra dialogue that you may require.  Where this is an exceptional vehicle it is 35 + years old and should be considered as such.  If you would like pictures of anything in particular let me know and I will email them to you.

Good luck and happy bidding.

The UAW's 'record contract' hinges on pensions, battery plants

Thu, Oct 12 2023

DETROIT - After nearly four weeks of disruptive strikes and hard bargaining, the United Auto Workers and the Detroit Three automakers have edged closer to a deal that could offer record-setting wage gains for nearly 150,000 U.S. workers. General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler parent Stellantis have all agreed to raise base wages by between 20% and 23% over a four-year deal, according to union and company statements. Ford and Stellantis have agreed to reinstate cost-of-living adjustments, or COLA. The companies have offered to boost pay for temporary workers and give them a faster path to full-time, full-wage status. All three have proposed slashing the time it takes a new hire to get to the top UAW pay rate. The progress in contract talks follows the first-ever simultaneous strike by the UAW against Detroit's Big Three automakers. The union began the strike on Sept. 15 in hopes of forcing a better deal from each major automaker. But coming close to a deal is not the same thing as reaching a deal. Big obstacles remain on at least two major UAW demands: restoring the retirement security provided by pre-2007 defined benefit pension plans, and covering present and future joint- venture electric vehicle battery plants under the union's master contracts with the automakers. On retirement, none of the automakers has agreed to restore pre-2007 defined-benefit pension plans for workers hired after 2007. Doing so could force the automakers to again burden their balance sheets with multibillion-dollar liabilities. GM and the former Chrysler unloaded most of those liabilities in their 2009 bankruptcies. The union and automakers have explored an approach to providing more income security by offering annuities as an investment option in their company-sponsored 401(k) savings plans, people familiar with the discussions said. Stellantis referred to an annuity option as part of a more generous 401(k) proposal on Sept. 22. Annuities or similar instruments could give UAW retirees assurance of fixed, predictable payouts less dependent on stock market ups and downs, experts said. Recent changes in federal law have removed obstacles to including annuities as a feature of corporate 401(k) plans, said Olivia Mitchell, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School and an expert on pensions and retirement. "Retirees want a way to be assured they won't run out of money," Mitchell said.

Ford to rebrand SVT as 999?

Mon, 22 Sep 2014

Ford operates a number of performance divisions around the world. There's SVT in the US, Team RS in Europe and Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) in Australia. But the Blue Oval has been steadily integrating its performance operations into one unit, and here we might have our first indication of what it will be called.
A reader at Jalopnik sent in a survey in which respondents were asked to gauge the name for a new performance brand from a "major automotive manufacturer," and while the identity of that automaker was not disclosed, according to the survey, the automaker is considering the name 999 for its new go-fast unit.
As our compatriots point out, the 999 was Ford's first racecar, a rudimentary chassis with a 19-liter inline-four campaigned by Henry Ford around the turn of the 20th century. (Ford also used the number to designate a Fusion fuel-cell racer a few years back.) That could prove the tie-in Dearborn is looking for in rebranding its performance operations worldwide, replacing the letters SVT, RS and FPV globally under one name.

Leno chooses his top 10 Mustangs

Sat, 14 Jun 2014

He may be a few months late to the party, but in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, Jay Leno has delivered a short video in which he runs down which of the Blue Oval's pony cars from the past 50 years are his favorites.
The list is pretty darn similar to our own, with some of the big names from the Mustang's half century making an appearance, while there are three or four cars here that we think you'll be pretty surprised by.
Take a look below for this short video from Jay Leno's Garage.
