1988 Ford F250 Pickup, Extended Cab, Low Miles, 7.3l Diesel W/ Wvo, Survivalist? on 2040-cars

This is my '88 Ford F250 diesel with WVO capability. I bought it for an adventure, trying out the whole pickup truck thing-- and it's lots of fun-- and the waste vegetable oil thing, in case there was a major fuel crisis, but I just don't use this truck as much any more as I should to justify owning it, and I'd rather not spend the time right now trying to get and filter WVO. If I had a barn I'd keep it just in case, but I don't. So I am at least offering it, and if it doesn't sell that's OK. As with any vehicle, there are good points and bad points. Bad points first. It needs some attention. Someone broke the passenger side quarter-glass (next to the back seat), and I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet. It probably won't be much, but there it is. When I first got it, I forgot to set the passenger brake and it rolled a few feet, brushing at about two miles per hour against a wooden streetlight post, which stopped it but caused a faint dent on the passenger side-- which I only notice at a certain angle, so I haven't fixed that either. The connection under the hood to the air conditioning is loose and needs tightening. It has a block warmer but I never used it and I'm not sure it works. And of course, as with any 26-year-old vehicle, there's a bit of rust/corrosion here and there, but nothing very serious. (Examine the photos for details.) It has two fuel tanks, but I've only really used the smaller one, so the other one should probably be examined if you want to use it. Someone put extendable side mirrors on it which swivel too freely and which really ought to be taller for comfortable and safe driving of a heavy-duty truck that sits so high off the ground. I've been racking my brains, but I think that's about it. The starting price (less than I have in it, as usual) reflects these drawbacks. Now the good stuff. It has Ford's 7.3 liter IDI diesel engine, which some people I've talked with have called the best automotive diesel engine ever, which is no longer made due to emissions considerations. In normal-to-hot weather I have no trouble starting it, and with fully charged batteries (it has two) it doesn't take that long in cold weather. It's a manual transmission-- which I consider a plus (I like control), and which seems to be getting rarer and rarer with each passing year. It's an extended cab with bench seats, meaning that up to six people could fit in the cab. It's a HD (heavy duty) and sits fairly high off the ground so you don't need to jack it up to slide under it and see what's going on. It has a camper cap (though one window has a minor leak). It has low mileage (83314 or so) for such a vintage pickup, and these things, I'm told, often last for over three hundred thousand miles. And it has a WVO conversion-- meaning you can operate it on diesel or WVO as you choose-- with a kit bought from and professionally installed by Greasecar.com. This has not been operated for a little while, so it should be cleaned first, but it wasn't used all that much, so it should be fine. With both tanks and a full 40-gallon tank of WVO, this beast would probably travel a thousand highway miles without refueling, which for a 5000-pound vehicle is not too shabby. Interior is pretty good-- no cracks to the dashboard or splits to the seats, and it doesn't smell or anything. All in all, this is quite a good, solid pickup, even if not currently perfect, and if you wanted to customize it (as I might do if it doesn't sell) it could become amazing. It would be ideal for a prepper or survivalist, since if TEOTWAWKI comes, petro-fuel will be hard to come by. 280-bhp Elemental RP1 revealed, now with bike-engine option
Thu, Jun 26 2014The Elemental RP1 might be Britain's next big boutique roadster success story. Designed by a team with Formula One experience, it aims to mix road car drivability with racecar performance in a single, adaptable package weighing less than 1,000 pounds. It was first previewed a few weeks ago, but the secrecy has finally disappeared due to its upcoming debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The backbone of the RP1 is a carbon fiber and aluminum tub onto which the front and rear subframes bolt on. Inside, it has an F1-like, feet-up driving position that allows for additional underfloor aerodynamic aids to improve downforce. Despite its hardcore nature, Elemental says that it wants the car to be very user friendly. Buyers should be able to drive the RP1 to the track, adjust it with some wrenches, go racing and drive it home. The company even claims the storage areas to either side of the engine offer enough room for a helmet and other racing gear. Hopefully, buyers don't crash, though, otherwise they might be stuck. Elemental is adding two more engine options for the RP1, as well. In addition to the previously announced tuned Ford 2.0-liter EcoBoost with 280 horsepower, buyers can also choose a upgraded version of Ford's three-cylinder 1.0-liter EcoBoost or a model aimed at pure track use with a 999cc Honda Fireblade motorcycle engine. The 2.0-liter uses a six-speed sequential manual gearbox, and a limited-slip differential and alternate gear sets are available as additional options. The first RP1s built will be pure racers for the 2015 season, and the first road cars will follow in the early summer of next year. Ford ditching Microsoft in favor of BlackBerry QNX for next-gen Sync?
Mon, 24 Feb 2014Ask the average consumer - at least, those who follow the goings-on in the automotive industry - which carmaker they'd most closely associate Microsoft, and the answer you'd most likely get would be Ford. The Blue Oval automaker, after all, was at the forefront of bringing Microsoft technology into cars with its pioneering Sync system, and, though reality didn't turn out as such, Ford's CEO was recently touted as a potential future head of the Redmond-based software giant. But that relationship, according to the latest reports, could be coming to an end.
Alan Mullaly kiboshed the idea of leaving Dearborn for Redmond, but more importantly Ford is tipped to be ditching Microsoft in developing its next-generation Sync system. In its place, Ford is expected to partner with BlackBerry's QNX division.
Now, before you go balking "BlackBerry?! But they're finished!" consider that QNX is (or at least was) an independent entity that Research In Motion (as BlackBerry's Ontario-based parent company was then known) just happened to have bought back in 2010. QNX provides control systems to everything from nuclear power plants and UAVs to automakers like Audi, BMW and Porsche.
Ford and GM link bonus checks to quality scores
Tue, 29 Apr 2014The poor first quarter earnings of Ford and General Motors are having an effect all the way up the food chain. Both automakers struggled with recalls in the first three months of the year, and, according to The Detroit News, they have responded by increasing the percentage of bonuses tied to vehicle quality for salaried workers, including top executives.
GM announced that 25 percent of bonuses (up from 10 percent) for all salaried workers would be tied to its vehicle quality standards. The automaker revealed in its financial report that it spent $1.3 billion on recall-related repairs in the first quarter, and net income was down 86 percent.
Ford also increased the quality proportion of bonuses for about 26,000 salaried workers all the way up to CEO Alan Mulally from 10 percent to 20 percent. The company announced in its report that the amount paid out in warranty and recall claims was about $400 million higher than expected in the first quarter. Its net income fell 39 percent from the previous year. "The change reflects how critical quality is to our overall business," said spokesperson Todd Nissen speaking to Autoblog.
