All 2018 Fiat 500s will get turbocharged engines
Thu, Feb 8 2018For 2018, every basic Fiat 500 is getting a healthy horsepower increase thanks to a standard turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder making 135 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. That's a big increase over the current model's naturally aspirated 1.4-liter engine that makes just 101 horsepower and 97 pound-feet of torque. The newly available turbo engine can also be fitted to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. Fiat 500 fans may also find the new turbo engine's specifications familiar, and that's because they're identical to the old Fiat 500 Turbo that was introduced a few years ago. That car was introduced as a sort of happy medium between the standard 500 and the Abarth. The Turbo disappeared for a little while, but will be resurrected as 2018's entry model. Fiat also says the new turbocharged 500 Pop and Lounge (the basic models) get sportier suspension and brakes than the old one, again similar to the discontinued 500 Turbo. The exterior also becomes more aggressive on both trim levels looking a bit like a toned-down Abarth. And if you've picked up on the theme here, the exterior looks much like the old 500 Turbo's. Mind you, we're not complaining about Fiat bringing back the Turbo as the entry-level 500. It brings the car closer in parity to the base Mini Cooper, effectively matching it for power, and coming up just 10 pound-feet of torque short in the twist department. And while we didn't find the old 500 Turbo to be nearly as fun as the Abarth, the extra power did make for a better basic Fiat – and so should the 2018s. Stellantis to offer electric versions of most of its European lineup by 2025
Thu, Apr 15 2021Newly merged automaker conglomerate Stellantis will offer electric versions of almost all of its European lineup by 2025, it said on Thursday, as the auto industry faces regulatory pushes in Europe and China to accelerate the shift to zero-emission cars. Formed in January by the merger of France's PSA and Italian-American group Fiat Chrysler, Stellantis is the world’s fourth largest carmaker with 14 brands including Opel, Jeep, Ram and Maserati, and like its peers faces an investor community keen for a road map to an electric lineup to rival Tesla . Speaking during Stellantis' first annual shareholders meeting, Chief Executive Carlos Tavares said that in 2021 the carmaker expects sales of electrified vehicles — that is, both plug-in hybrids and fully electric models — to more than triple to over 400,000 units in 2021. By 2025, electrified vehicles should make up 38% of European sales, a huge jump from the 14% of sales it expects in 2021. Tavares said by 2030 electric models should make up 70% of European sales and 35% of U.S. sales. He said Stellantis will use four electric platforms for passenger vehicles across its 14-brand empire — small, medium and large sizes for cars, and "frame" for high-margin SUVs and pickup trucks. Sweden's Volvo said this month its lineup would be fully electric by 2030, and Ford Motor Co said in February its lineup in Europe would be too. BMW has said at least 50% of its car sales should be fully-electric models by 2030. Sales of electric and plug-in hybrid cars in the European Union almost trebled to over 1 million vehicles last year, accounting for more than 10% of overall sales. Abarth trim of Fiat 124 Spider reportedly debuts in Geneva
Mon, Feb 29 2016Keep your eyes open for the possible debut of the high-performance Abarth version of the Fiat 124 Spider at the Geneva Motor Show, which opens March 1. Alfredo Altavilla, FCA's chief operating officer for Europe, told Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera the hotter droptop would debut in Switzerland, according to Road & Track. Unfortunately, he simply said the convertible would be there and didn't offer any details about its upgrades. Rumors paint a fairly complete picture about what to expect from the Abarth 124. European models would likely make 170 horsepower from a tuned version of the regular one's 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. However, there would also be an even hotter EsseEsse trim, which the US would get, with around 220 horsepower. Achieving that much power might require a new engine, and it's possible the convertible could borrow the 1.75-liter turbo unit from the Alfa Romeo 4C. Spy shots show the Abarth has a more aggressive look to match its extra performance. The body features larger front takes, bigger side sills, and dual-exit exhausts at each corner of the rear. Reports also suggest Fiat would borrow from the classic 124 Spider by offering options like a removable hardtop and blacked-out hood. During the standard 124 Spider's debut at the LA Auto Show, Olivier Francois, global head of the Fiat brand, said the company plans to market the new convertible as a relatively affordable but distinctly Italian sports car. A Ferrari might be out of a buyer's reach, but a Fiat is attainable. The Abarth's extra performance seems like a perfect way to further that message, and we can't wait to see it. Related Video:
