FCA eliminates just under 2,000 supplemental contract workers due to coronavirus constraints

Car companies have jumped in quickly to help combat coronavirus. They’re even beginning to manufacture some of the badly needed medical supplies, like ventilators and masks. However, with stay-at-home orders sweeping across the nation and folks practicing social distancing, automotive sales and manufacturing have quickly dried up in North America. That leads us to todayÂ’s news coming out of FCA. A company spokesperson told us that approximately 2,000 supplemental workers (a subcategory of the companyÂ’s many contract workers) are being laid off. HereÂ’s the official statement from FCA: “In light of the challenges created by the COVID 19 situation, and the various ‘stay at homeÂ’ orders from multiple states, a number of development projects within FCA have been temporarily put on hold. "As a result of this, subcontract companies who were providing external support to a number of these projects have been asked to temporarily suspend their activities as we reprioritize certain initiatives and projects. We will continue to monitor the situation with the intent to return to normal activity as soon as the situation allows.” FCA made it clear in our communications with the company that it is not terminating all contract workers, nor is it terminating any employees of the company itself. The rationale here is that certain development work is on pause, so those who were contracted to be a part of that work are now out. We're told that those workers are in white-collar functions, not manufacturing jobs. We asked FCA if it had plans to reinstate all of the affected workers once the coronavirus crisis has passed, but received no commitment either way. “At this point weÂ’re going to continue to monitor the situation,” a company spokesperson told us. Questions still remain when it comes to the stimulus package moving through Congress right now as it pertains to the automotive industry. FCA says itÂ’s currently studying the bill, but hasnÂ’t offered up a comment on the situation yet. Listen to the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth's gravelly growl

While they share most of the same underpinnings, there's more to differentiate the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth from the Mazda MX-5 than just styling. It features a Fiat-designed and built turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder instead of the Mazda's naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter engine. And for the Abarth specifically, it has an amazing exhaust note courtesy of a Record Monza exhaust system. The upgraded exhaust is a standard feature on 2019 Abarth models, and it alone is worth considering the more aggressive-looking performance-oriented 124 variant. It gives the roadster an angry burble at idle, that turns into a gravelly growl as the revs rise. It's not quite as rorty as the straight-pipe system in the 500 Abarth hatchback, but it's close. The volume is pretty loud, but not so much that you'll set off car alarms. You can hear the various sounds in the video above that features start-up, idle, acceleration and free-revving.

Fiat is hitting the reset button on the 500L Urbana

Fiat is refreshing something most people probably never even knew existed: the "Urbana" 500L. For 2019, the Urbana Edition offers a value-minded black-out appearance package in attempts to jazz up the less-than-jazzy XXL 500. Fiat first introduced the 500L Urbana Trekking style package in 2014 for the 2015 model year. Since its introduction, the included trimmings have slightly changed, but the idea remains the same: a style package that aggregates numerous add-ons for a discount price. On 2018 models, the $395 option offered 17-inch black wheels, a black roof, and black side mirrors. Now called the Urbana Edition, the package is still only available on the Trekking trim but now costs $595. It offers gloss black 17-inch wheels, Miron Black door handle accents, black side-body trim, black fog lamps, black side mirrors, and blacked-out fascias. The Urbana Edition is available in black Bronzo Metallizato, Bianco, Grigio Scuro, Verde Bosco, and a contrasting black roof remains optional. Inside, Fiat only added minor changes. Black leather seats have contrasting copper stitching, and the dashboard features a copper 500 logo to signify the special edition. The updated 2019 Fiat 500L Urbana Edition will be available starting this spring.
