Ferrari plans theme park for North America

Wed, Apr 20 2016

Ferrari is building more theme parks, and the next one could be built somewhere in North America, according to Bloomberg. The exotic automaker opened Ferrari World – its first theme park – in 2010 on Abu Dhabi's Yas Island, adjacent to the grand prix racing circuit and where Warner Bros will soon open another theme park. A second Ferrari theme park (pictured) is currently under construction in Spain as part of the PortAventura Resort that's one of the largest in Europe, and the company recently announced a third facility "to be located in one of the primary cities in mainland China" as well. The prospective North American location would be the fourth, though details on potential sites remain unknown. The Los Angeles and Orlando areas have developed into epicenters for theme parks in America and could attract a Ferrari location, or send it looking for alternatives like Six Flags and Busch Gardens parks have. Wherever Ferrari selects, you can expect the park to feature various racing-themed attractions, including roller coasters, vertical acceleration towers, virtual test tracks, and more. The licensing of additional Ferrari theme parks comes as the company strives to position itself as a luxury lifestyle brand as much as an automaker and racing team. The storied marque has lines of clothing and various merchandise, and a network of retail stores through which it sells its products. Underscoring its expansion, Ferrari shareholders approved the appointment of several new board members from luxury brands, including Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. Investors also approved the renewal of Amedeo Felisa's contract as chief executive, but he's not expected to stick around much longer as Sergio Marchionne assumes more control over the company, which recently spun off from the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group over which he also presides. Kimi out, Bottas in at Ferrari?

Fri, Jun 26 2015

Things have not gone well for Scuderia Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen since he returned to the team in 2014. After a pair of strong seasons for Lotus that saw him finish third and fifth, the Finn ended last season in 12th, 106 points behind his teammate, Spaniard Fernando Alonso. His 2015 fortunes have improved – he currently sits in fourth, only a spot behind teammate Sebastian Vettel – but he's been remarkably inconsistent, struggling with the SF15-T, a car that was specifically designed to work with his driving style. He only has a single podium this season, was forced to retire in Australia after a bad pitstop, and he crashed out of the most recent round in Austria. Clearly, Kimi should just stay away from races starting in "Austr." That advice may have come too late, though, as rumors are bubbling up that Ferrari may be swapping its Finns, dropping Raikkonen for his young countryman, Valtteri Bottas. Fox News, citing a report from Germany's Bild, claims Ferrari has made an offer to Bottas' current team, Williams, to secure his services. It doesn't sound like the British team will give him up all that easily, though. According to Fox, Williams enjoys a contractual "option" on the 25-year-old Finn's contract for next season, and that Ferrari would need to buy that contract out to steal him away. Bild claims the Italians have offered $4.4 million, but Williams' second-in-command, Claire Williams, wants nearly four times that. Ferrari has, rejected that figure, allegedly and unsurprisingly. Should the two sides come to a compromise, German and Sahara Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg seems to be the popular choice to take the open Williams seat, Fox is reporting. It's unclear where Raikkonen would end up next. And with that, we consider the 2015 Formula 1 silly season officially open.

Matt Damon is Carroll Shelby, with Christian Bale in Ford vs. Ferrari film

Thu, Jun 21 2018

Right after we reported that one of the Le Mans-winning Ford GT40s is coming up for auction, word got round that its story will now be turned into a Hollywood movie. There will be an as-yet-untitled major motion picture that tells the story of Ford battling Ferrari in the 1960s, culminating in the Ford GT40's dramatic 1-2-3 finish in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. The movie has lined up an all-star cast, with "Batman" and "American Psycho" actor Christian Bale tapped to play key GT40 developer, test driver and racer Ken Miles, and "Punisher" actor Jon Bernthal as Lee Iacocca. The plum role of Carroll Shelby is going to Matt Damon, last seen driving across the Red Planet in "The Martian" or down a flight of stairs in the "Bourne" film series. The film's director will be James Mangold, known from directing last year's "Logan." View 37 Photos Autoweek reports that the original screenplay was based on A.J. Baime's book " Go Like Hell," but there will be a different screenplay written from scratch. Originally, "Go Like Hell" was to be a different project starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Meanwhile, the book will reportedly be turned into a TV series produced by Peter Dinklage of "Game of Thrones." And meanwhile some more, there are also competing Enzo Ferrari biopics in the works starring Robert De Niro and another starring Hugh Jackman that will also surely touch on the rivalry with Ford. While there's no guarantee yet that the GT40 biopic will match Steve McQueen's "Le Mans," we're got high hopes. It's a great story worthy of all the attention it's getting.
