$1.3B worth of classic cars were auctioned in 2014
Sat, Dec 27 2014The collector auto market in the US just continues to expand with the values of vehicles seemingly only growing in the past years, especially if they have a prancing horse on the hood. This year was no different. According to data compiled by classic car insurance agency Hagerty, there were about $1.3 billion worth of vintage rides auctioned in North America in 2014, up just slightly from $1.2 billion crossing the block in 2013. If you want an idea of just how big a role the Monterey Car Week plays in the North American collector hobby, Hagerty's stats illustrate it perfectly. The company recorded $430 million in auction sales during the week – about a third of the entire market for the year. The event also hosted the biggest seller of 2014 when the hammer fell on a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO (pictured above) for $38.115 million at Bonhams. In fact, vintage Ferraris in general were among the top buys in the classic auto world in 2014. Eight of the ten most expensive vehicles sold at auction were Prancing Horses (the other two were Ford GT40s). Also, the insurance company's price index for these Italian stallions showed a 43-percent gain in value for the year. The market for another Italian supercar is exploding, as well. The Lamborghini Countach showed a staggering 175-percent growth in auction value in 2014. According to Hagerty, the average price when they crossed the block was $736,599. Judging by Hagerty's numbers, there were still some places to look for those hoping to spend a bit less money. The Aston Martin Lagonda showed a strong gain in value with a 32-percent increase in auction price, but they still averaged $47,078. In addition, the company's index for '50s American cars showed only one-percent growth for these classics. These huge leaps in collector car value might be winding down, according to Hagerty. It predicts growth in the market to slow to an estimated five percent gain in 2015. Maybe a few of these classics might actually become a bit more affordable to fans without such deep pockets sometime in the future. Ferrari FF spotted testing, may get new turbo engine
Wed, Feb 11 2015With the introduction of the turbocharged Ferrari 488 GTB at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, the FF is about to be the oldest model in the Ferrari lineup. The Prancing Horse doesn't appear to want the 2+2 shooting brake getting too much longer in the tooth, though, if this prototype is any indication. This one wears all of its camouflage around the lower grille and hood, and the tape makes it look like Ferrari is trying to direct air to some new ducting under its bodywork. Beyond just some updated styling, these changes suggest something different is going on under the hood. One possibility stems from an earlier rumor that Ferrari's V12 models could get hybrids to be more efficient and boost power. Alternatively, other rumors suggest that the FF might get the 3.9-liter turbocharged V8 from the California T and 488 GTB to create a new, entry-level model. Ferrari has already been caught on video lapping an FF around the Fiorano test track. It looked relatively normal except for some odd exhausts poking out the rear, which weren't on display for this test car. In any case, one thing is certain: The Prancing Horse definitely has something in the works for its all-wheel drive wagon.

Sun, Dec 28 2014Here's the kind of take you don't get too often. In fact, it hardly ever happens. Fan favorite Chris Harris has wanted a Ferrari FF since he saw it for the first time, but he couldn't get his bank account to comply with his desires. So he waited a couple of years for the price to come down, and found a specimen he could talk himself - and Ferrari Finance - into: a 2012 in Tour de France Blue with tan leather and 6,000 miles for the 'What, me worry?" price of 160,000 pounds ($249K US). Harris said that after putting 45,000 pounds down, his monthly payment is 1,400 ($2,177 US) pounds per month. He also said, "Sometimes you just have to do stupid things because you want to do stupid things." Five months in, Harris has no regrets, and in the beginning of the review he gets to one of the primary points that makes us fall in love with cars that can never be exploited on public roads: They make you feel equal parts badass and beastly and baronial at every speed. Or as Harris puts it, it's a "frankly ridiculous motorcar." In the best way. Check out his always-compelling take in the video.
