I am selling my rare and Award winning 1980 Datsun 280zx.  The Award Plaque goes with the car.  I purchased this car from a collector a few years back and since then I had very little chance to drive it.  It was stored with my other collectible cars in a covered and conditioned storage in California.  I just drove it a little last week and it ran like a champ.  I hate to sell it but I am reducing my collection.  My 1970 Z is gone and this is the next one in line.  This is all original car. It is in great shape and if you know these cars you will know that it is very rare to find one like this.  This is not a restored car, it is original car that is in great shape.

The Tenth Anniversary of the DATSUN Z Car was commemorated by the factory with the production of a Special Edition Z Car for 1980. This Special Edition was named the "280ZX-10. 10th Anniversary Special Edition". Pictured and for sale here is the more popular BLACK GOLD Edition of the 10th Anniversary Edition.  The basis for this special edition was the 1980 280ZX GL package. They were all then equipped with a Special Edition Option Package, which included the following:

1. Numbered, Commemorative Dash Plaque (Canadian model has Maple Leaf emblem on Dash Plaque)

2. Two Tone Paint (Gold/Black or Red/Black)

3. Gold Hood Emblem & gold or red stripe on black hood

This car was very popular when it came out for the US market in 1980. Everybody wanted the black and gold version. Datsun (Nissan) had a lot to celebrate in 1980, following 10 years of success with their Z-car. They built 3000 special edition 280ZXs to commemorate a decade of Japan's most successful sports car, and of those, a few were special two-tone cars like this one. This is an example of the pinnacle of first-generation Z-car evolution with a pedigree to match. There was nothing subtle about the Z-car crashing the sports car party in 1970, and the 10th anniversary models are equally brash. Sporting a black-over-gold paint scheme, it looks fast just sitting still and even four decades later, that first-generation Z shape is still an attention-grabber. This is the 2-seater version of the Z-car, so it has ideal long nose/short deck proportions that are only enhanced by the two-tone paint scheme. Super straight sheetmetal makes this car look impressive from any angle, and the original emblems and anniversary decals are all there. The bumpers are still in good shape and only showing a few minor signs of age. The tan/gold interior is authentic Datsun and it is all original and in great shape. The leather seats are in excellent condition and look more modern than you'd expect for 1980. Matching door panels and an excellent dash pad are more evidence that someone spent the time and money to keep this car right, and the carpets look almost new. The gauges are clear and well-marked with the trio of auxiliary instruments in the center being a Z-car tradition that continues to this day. It's loaded with options, including an manual transmission, A/C, cruise control, power windows and locks, and a period-correct AM/FM/cassette stereo system. And even though this is a 2-seater, there's ample storage space behind the seats, which also includes tie-downs and bags for the removable glass T-tops, which were a popular feature throughout the late-70s and early 80s. The heart of the 280ZX is a fuel-injected 2.8-liter inline-six. Like BMW and Jaguar, Datsun realized that there was nothing else quite like a brawny six to deliver the classic sports car feel. While they made it bigger during its lifespan to add torque for American roads, it never lost its turbine-like smoothness or gutsy tenor wail. It looks like there's an awful lot going on under the hood, but the truth is that these power plants are anvil-reliable and fairly easy to work on, and parts are reasonably accessible, even today. This one starts easily thanks to fuel injection and runs beautifully, offering a thoroughly modern driving experience. The all-independent suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes make it competent in almost any situation, and the transmission is quick-witted enough to know when you're hustling and when you're just relaxing. The underside of the car is impressively preserved, and a lot better than most 34-year-old cars. Handsome 14-inch 4-spoke alloys are in superb condition  If you like the early Z, this version has a lot of pedigree and a great collectible car which is in great original condition with low miles.

This is an original 10th Anniversary 1980ZX. Number 63 of 3000 or 2500 Black/Gold cars produced. It has been stored in a controlled environment. The car has absolutely no rust. The exterior and interior are in excellent condition. The odometer currently reads 53,471 original miles. It drives great and there are no mechanical issues. Everything works.

Datsun's lackluster initial sales fall below Tata Nano

Wed, 15 Oct 2014

When Tata introduced the Nano back in 2008, everyone was amazed at how cheap it was. They called it a game changer, but no game was changed. In fact, it took Tata five years to sell the 250,000 units it had the capacity to build in a single year. As it turns out, even buyers in what economists call "developing markets" like India aren't necessarily interested in buying an ultra-cheap automobile. And now it appears that Nissan may be falling into the same trap.
A little over a year ago, Nissan revived its old moniker Datsun to serve as a budget brand - similar to what ally Renault did with Dacia. Its lineup (consisting of models like the Go hatchback, Go+ minivan, On-Do sedan and Mi-Do hatch) is largely based on old architecture, packaged with little more than basic equipment and sold at rock-bottom prices. But Bloomberg reports that, even in the brand's core markets like India and Indonesia, the new Datsuns haven't been selling.
According to local industry figures, Datsun has sold fewer than 10,000 units of its $5,100 Go hatchbacks in India since its introduction back in March. Maruti Suzuki, by comparison, sells twice that many of its similarly priced Alto hatchbacks every month. In fact, after peaking in April, Datsun only sold 607 units in India this past July, dipping 77 percent to drop below even the number of Nanos which Tata sold that month.

Fiat contemplating sub-brand to compete with Dacia, Datsun

Tue, 05 Feb 2013

You can add Fiat to the admittedly short list of automakers considering a low-cost brand to rival Dacia. The inexpensive Eastern European brand from Renault-Nissan has performed on the balance sheet like a premium model line, and the money the alliance is taking off the table is encouraging other players to deal themselves in. Pretty soon Nissan's Datsun sub-brand will join the Dacia party, going on sale in Russia, Indonesia and India and will claim even more rubles, rupiahs and rupees for the parent company. Volkswagen recently said it will make a decision this year on a budget line for the Chinese market. With the euthanasia of Lancia and plans to move the Fiat brand upmarket, company CEO Sergio Marchionne wonders aloud to Automotive News Europe whether there could be room for a new budget brand underneath Fiat.
We're told that the initiative has been in the idea box for five years and even moved to the stage of name considerations, like Innocenti, but worries about profit kept it from realization. If such a range were to be developed, Marchionne says it couldn't be built in Italy and stay within budget, and the company is "analyzing its manufacturing capacity outside of Europe to see if a low-cost brand is viable."

Datsun reveals new On-Do budget sedan in Russia [w/video]

Tue, 08 Apr 2014

When Nissan revived the Datsun brand name, it essentially hit the "undo" button on the rebranding it undertook decades ago. But this time, the Datsun name is being used solely as a budget brand for developing markets. The reborn marque launched in India this past July with its Go hatchback, returned in September with the Go+ minivan and revealed the Redi-Go concept just last month. And now it's back again with the new On-Do sedan.
Launched in Moscow by CEO Carlos Ghosn, the On-Do was designed and engineered in Japan specifically for the Russian market - Nissan's fifth largest worldwide - where it will be built at the AvtoVaz plant in Togliatti. Decidedly budget-oriented, the Datsun On-Do is a four-door, five-seat econo-box measuring 172 inches long, 67 inches wide and 60 inches tall with an 18.7 cubic-foot trunk which Datsun describes as class-leading. Punctuating an otherwise bland shape is a large front grille and lighting front and rear that looks (and very well might be) bigger than the wheels.
Not that the Datsun On-Do needs a big contact patch to transfer power to the road: motivation is provided by a 1.6-liter engine with a grand total of - wait for it... wait a little longer - 87 horsepower. Which might strike you as a reasonable amount of muscle, considering the 400,000 rubles Datsun is getting for the On-Do (but consider that translates to about $11,300). That's a couple grand more than what Nissan gets for the Micra in that other giant northern country, or about the same amount it gets for the Versa in the US (which sells in Russia for 499k in rubles) - both of which are powered by what is in all likelihood the same 1.6-liter four but producing 109 hp. Of course Russia has different tax rates than the United States or Canada, but with such little power, the Datsun would fall into Russia's lowest tax bracket.
