This car and I have been through a lot together.  She’s been there with me through college, a couple of long-distance moves, numerous family holiday disasters, and a few relationships (also disasters).  But it’s time for us to move on and go our separate ways.

Her name is Dinah.  My dad bought her off of my grandpa’s accountant, Rose, whose eyesight started failing in her advanced years.  We are the second owners of the vehicle.  Before I got ahold of Dinah, she had very, very low mileage.  Even now the mileage is at 87,360 on the original motor.

Dinah took me from Oklahoma City to Oberlin, Ohio for college, where I neglected her for my studies.  During those college years I cheated on her with a Schwinn 10-speed, but she remained faithful to me, dutifully carting my rump to Cleveland for the occasional night on the town.

After college we separated for a year.  I went to New York, where Dinah was replaced by the subway and sidewalks.  Dinah went back home to Oklahoma and patiently waited for me.   She knew I’d eventually come crawling back to her, and she was right.

We were reunited when I moved out to California for grad school.  When I picked her up in Oklahoma, all of the good times and memories came rushing back.  She didn’t hold any grudges or hard feelings about the year I spent without her.  I hopped into the driver’s seat and Dinah took me all the way to Los Angeles, cruising along Interstate 40 like a big, comfy desert yacht.

Time, weather, and the harsh California sun have worn her down some, but she still runs great.  Almost everything under the hood is factory original, with some notable exceptions.  Her radiator gave out, which I replaced.  I also replaced the transmission with a brand new one (which was quite expensive, but she deserved it after everything we’d been through).

Age has taken its toll on some of her exterior and interior.  The vinyl on the driver’s seat is ripped (for which my butt is also to blame).   The dash is somewhat brittle and has cracked in a few places.  And the plastic knob on the driver side window crank broke recently (window still rolls up and down fine, just needs a new knob).

Her biggest cosmetic issue is on the passenger side.  In a shameful and embarrassing moment, I was attempting to avoid some plastic cones on the left of the of the car and in doing so managed to run the right side of the car into a pole in a parking lot.

The title is clear.  The car will need to be registered (it was last registered in Oklahoma).

Though I’ve left her for a younger model, I still love Dinah and am hoping to find her a great new garage.

This 450-hp electric Lotus Evora is powered by Tesla and Chevrolet

Tue, May 9 2017

When someone mentions an electric Lotus, the first thing that comes to mind is the Tesla Roadster, the California-based automaker's first vehicle. That car started life as an Elise before being heavily massaged and adapted by Tesla's engineers. In a similar spirit, the people at Onpoint Dyno are close to finishing Blue Lightning, a track-ready all-electric Lotus Evora. Blue Lightning uses a Tesla drive unit and a Chevrolet Volt battery pack, both mounted in the middle in place of the Evora's 3.5-liter Toyota V6. It's putting down about 450 horsepower at the wheels. The car was built for time attack sessions, so power is fed through custom forged wheels and super sticky Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tires, the same ones found on the last Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. There is a custom digital instrument cluster in place of the Lotus gauges. There's also a regen paddle on the left side of the steering wheel. With a full charge, Blue Lighting should go about 120 miles. While the car runs under its own power, it's only about 90 percent complete. It has no power steering, no firewall in between the seats and the motor and battery pack, no A/C, and a large hole where the shift lever used to be. Other final touches include fine-tuning the brakes and suspension. There is also a custom rear bumper coming that should make it look more like the new Lotus Evora 400. Onpoint Dyno expects the car to hit the track in the next month or so. Related Video:

Chevy gives Camaro Red, Black Accents for SEMA

Mon, Oct 26 2015

Just the other day, Chevy announced a series of modified show cars it's planning to bring to SEMA this year. Now it has revealed full details on what could prove the most enticing among them in the form of a pair of Camaros. These new Red Accent and Black Accent editions are based on the new, sixth-generation 2016 Camaro SS. The former starts out as a Camaro SS convertible, done up in silver with red trim inside and out. It's got a leather interior, custom grille, hash-mark fender graphics, blacked-out bowtie badge, and 20-inch alloys. Even the engine is visually enhanced with a red cover. While it was at it, Chevy also dropped the suspension and fitted a new air intake and Brembo front brakes. Joining it is the Black Accent concept, based on a red Camaro SS coupe. As its name suggests, it's got a blacked-out aero kit, bowtie badge, and fuel cover, along with darkened tailllamps and satin black stripes. It also gets a black leather interior and its own set of 20-inch wheels, along with the aforementioned lowering kit, Brembo front brakes, air intake, and red engine cover. The Accent concepts are designed to showcase the extent of the accessories Chevy is offering for the new Camaro, and will be showcased at SEMA alongside modified versions of the Spark, Trax, Malibu, Colorado, and Sierra. Feel free to scope out the gallery above and the details in the press release below. The best Super Bowl car commercials from the last 5 years

Wed, Jan 28 2015

If you've been dipping into the Autoblog feed over the past days and weeks, you wouldn't even have to be a sports fan to know the Super Bowl is coming up. Automakers have been teasing their spots for the big game, dropping them days early, fully-formed onto the Internet and otherwise trying to amp up the multi-million-dollar outlays that they've made for air time on the biggest advertising day of the year. And, we're into it. The lead up to the Super Bowl is almost akin to a mini auto show around these parts; with automakers being amongst the most prolific advertisers on these special Sundays. The crop of ads from 2015 looks as strong as ever, but we thought we'd take a quick look back at some of our favorite spots from the last five years. Take a look at our picks – created from a very informal polling of Autoblog editors and presented in no particular order – and then tell us about your recent faves, in Comments. Chrysler, Imported From Detroit Chrysler, Eminem and a lingering pan shot of "The Fist" – it doesn't get much more Motown than 2011's Imported From Detroit. With the weight of our staffers hailing from in and around The D, it's no wonder that our memories still favor this epic Super Bowl commercial (even though the car it was shilling was crap). Imported really set the tone for later Chrysler ads, too, repeated the formula: celebrity endorsement + dramatic copy + dash of jingoism = pulled car-guy heartstrings. Mercedes-Benz, Soul teaser with Kate Upton One of our favorite Super Bowl commercials (and yours, based on the insane number of views you logged) didn't even technically air during the game. Mercedes-Benz teased its eventual spot Soul with 90-seconds worth of Kate Upton threatening to do her best Joy Harmon impression. (Teaser indeed.) It doesn't win points for cleverness, use of music, acting, or any compelling carness, but it proved that Mercedes' advertisers knew how to make a splash in the Internet Age. And, hey, it's still classier than every GoDaddy commercial. Kia, A Dream Car. For Real Life Like the Mercedes video above, the initial draw here is a pretty lady; in this case the always stunning Adriana Lima. But this Kia commercial really delivers the extra effort we expect while scarfing crabby snacks and homemades, too. First of all, Motley Crue. Second, a cowboy on a bucking rhino. Enjoy yet again.
