My personal car... Purchased new in 1971 by a woman down the street from me when I was 10 years old. (I used to wash it for her for $.25) I bought it from her in 1981 when it had 64xxx miles. I did an exterior repaint and overhauled the original engine. The exhaust tips and a couple little pieces I bought new from my local Chevy dealer in '81. I didn't think about them being N.O.S. at the time because they were simply N.S.!! It was our daily driver until 1986 when my daughter was born. I had to sell it to pay for her. 82500 miles (I wanted to name her "Shavelle") I saw the car only once in the late 80's/early 90's at Super Chevy Sunday in Seattle where it took 1st Place out of 42 Chevelles. It had 4 careful owners who only drove it to shows or Sunday church...a total of 6500 miles in 12 years!! I was able to buy it back in '98 with just under 89000 miles. It was on consignment at a Porsche/Ferrari lot in Portland. Fast forward to now!! From new, this car has always been in a garage. So there has never been an opportunity for rust. Never hit, with original sheetmetal throughout. All pinch welds intact. It is hard to remember for sure all the details over the last 40 years, so you are welcome to inspect it. The undercarriage, under the hood, and in the truck and jams is original paint. Yes, still original paint underneath a little dirt. No rust!! One of the "sales pitches" the sales guy used when I called about it; This car has never had the shoulder harness seatbelts down. That was what I was told, and what I told the guy I sold it to. That's when I knew it was mine... Last summer I spun a bearing on the cam and when we went through the engine, I verified the numbers. It is completely numbers matching. Even the heads were built the same day. We put new bearings, rings, cam, etc, but this engine has never been bored :) Over the years I have taken a couple of minor liberties: I put on chrome original style valve covers, added a cd player in the glovebox and replaced the rear speakers, added HEI and a single wire alternator. However, I have all the original parts except the distributor. I also added an alarm with power locks, but no holes have been cut. The interior is original, but I seem to remember having the drivers seat repaired 30 years ago, not sure. It still has its original M22 Rock Crusher 4-speed and has a wonderful whine. I put in a new clutch and pressure plate while the engine was out. Original exhaust tips. California turbos (?) 373 posi rear, rebuilt at about 92k. One of the previous guys put a really tall gear in it that I just couldn't stand. Most of the pics are of the car with 17 inch KMC 502 directional wheels with Falken 275/50 series tires. I have no doubt this is one of the nicest original, unrestored 71's out there.

Sunday Drive: From a mid-engine 'Vette to a restomod RV

Sun, Jan 7 2018

Automotive enthusiasts are a diverse bunch. As proof, we present last week's top posts on Autoblog, starting with some really good spy photos of the upcoming mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette. Will it be sold alongside a classic front-engine 'Vette? We have no idea, but we can't wait to find out. Up next is a pickup truck. Can't get much further from a supercar, right? At least both the Corvette and the 2019 Ram 1500 – which will debut a radical new design that appears to eschew the mini big-rig look of past Rams in favor of something more refined – are both American. Decidedly not American? The Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV. The boxy off-road 'ute looks a heck of a lot like the old one, which is probably a good thing, but we know it'll be fancier and more luxurious than ever before. Check out the leaked images below. Also hailing from Germany, but sharing absolutely nothing else in common at all, is the Audi A4 Allroad. We've been driving this all-wheel-drive wagon for a while now, and we like it quite a bit. And, last but not least, is a 1959 bus that's been converted into an RV. Like we said, y'all certainly are a diverse bunch. Weekly Recap: Tesla loses money, still dominates the news

Sat, Aug 8 2015

Some people get an inordinate amount of attention. In politics, it's Donald Trump. In football, it's Jim Harbaugh. And in the auto world, it's Elon Musk and his always-fascinating electric car company, Tesla Motors. General Motors is spending $877 million to upgrade a factory. So what! US auto sales are up. Who cares? Tesla has a metal snake that will recharge your car! So was the week in Tesla – er, the industry. Snarkiness aside, Tesla did dominate the news cycle, led by the announcement the company lost $184 million in the second quarter. Tesla also said it expects to deliver between 50,000 and 55,000 vehicles this year, and is preparing for a full launch of the Model X crossover in September. Musk also made news during the earnings call by simply not answering a question about ride sharing, leading to speculation Tesla could be considering its own operation. While the financials were the arguably the most important company news, reports of a Model S cyber hacking were more compelling fodder for Tesla followers. Researchers were able to attack the sedan and bring it to a stop, though they required access to the car first. Tesla says it already has deployed a remedy for the situation. On a lighter note, Tesla published a video of its metal charger prototype that autonomously uncoils like a snake to power up the company's vehicles, provoking plenty of humorous comments and comparisons. Watch it and decide for yourself. While some of this might seem trivial, much of Tesla's recent attention has been warranted. It's the first startup US automaker in decades to launch from nothing and actually gain traction in the market. Sure, Musk is a lightning rod and Tesla always seems to be in the spotlight. But amid all of the publicity, it easy to lose sight of the new reality: Tesla is a force. OTHER NEWS & NOTES 2016 Chevy Volt lights up 106 MPGe The Chevy Volt's vitals are looking healthier for 2016. The second-generation plug-in hybrid racks up a gaudy 106 miles per gallon equivalent, which is an increase of eight MPGe from the 2015 model. The new Volt can travel 53 miles on electricity, a significant jump from the 2015 Volt's 38-mile range. The new car also has a 420-mile total range when factoring in the capability of the gasoline engine, which is 40 miles greater than the current car offers.

GM opens military discount to 21M veterans and their spouses

Thu, Apr 7 2016

May marks the start of National Military Appreciation Month, and General Motors is getting into the spirit by expanding its military discount program to, well, just about everyone. That includes a total of 21 million military veterans and their spouses, along with the current slate of active duty, reserve, and National Guard members. The discount can slash thousands of dollars off the price of a new Buick, Chevrolet, or GMC vehicles, with Automotive News listing an $1,100 discount on the top gas-powered version of the Malibu, the Premiere. Those that want a bit more spice can get $1,700 off the price of a last-generation 2015 Camaro SS, while truck buyers will enjoy $3,000 off the Chevy Silverado All Star. That's just a start, though, since the military discount can be paired with other GM incentives. The discount doesn't apply to everything, though. Some are understandable – none of Cadillac's vehicles are included in the deal, nor is the Corvette Z06. You'll also be unable to apply the discount to a range of base-level trims, like the Chevy Cruze or Equinox L, the base Colorado, or the entry level GMC Acadia, Canyon, and Terrain. A full list is available at GM's dedicated military discount website. GM's expanded discount plan runs from today through May 31.
