History:
This Camaro has been in the family since 1989 when it was purchased from the original owner.  It was driven for many years and then restored in 2001.  Since then, it has been driven rarely, never in the rain or snow and has always been garage kept.  Over the past 12 years since the restoration, it has been driven only 1347 miles.  The mileage before restoration was approximately 160,000.  The original build sheet, owner's manual and other original documentation go with the car.
Restoration:
The body was completely disassembled   All mechanical components were either replaced or restored during the restoration, including but not lined to the engine, new T56 six speed, clutch, suspension, wheels, tires, brakes, master cylinder, brake lines, floor pans, exhaust system, radiator, carpeting, seat covers, gauges, etc.
Engine:
The engine started life as a 325 horsepower 396 that was bored 0.030" over (402 cubic inches) and fitted with a factory steel crank.  The engine components were carefully selected to run in the 2500 - 6500 rpm range.    The following components were installed:

  • TRW forged pistons (with the heads, the engine has a pump friendly 10.5:1 compression ratio)
  • Manley H-bear connecting rods (P/N 14060)
  • Edelbrock aluminum RPM cylinder heads (P/N 60459)
  • Competition cams hydraulic flat tappet cam.  244 degrees duration at 0.050" lift (292 advertised duration) and 0.550" lift at the valves.  (P/N CL11-213-3)
  • Crower roller rockers (P/N 73605)
  • Fluidamper harmonic balancer (P/N 620111)
  • 750 cfm speed demon carburator -fitted with an electric choke and adjustable air bleeds for fine tuning.

  • Weiand Team G aluminum water pump (P/N 9243)
  • March pulley system with flat belts (P/N 23030)
  • Edelbrock high flow fuel pump
  • Electromotive distributorless ignition system - XDI System with 2 dual coil packs.
  • High output alternator (140 amp)
  • HPC coated Hooker Super Competition headers - 2" primaries and 3.5" collectors.
  • High torque mini starter
Drive Train:
  • T-56 six speed manual transmission

  • Trans Am steering wheel
Exterior:
  • Repainted with the original factory white
  • New stripe kit
  • New rear tail lights
  • All spoilers and ground effects restored
  • Functioning Air Induction scoop.
General:
This car is not for the faint at heart and is an absolute blast to drive.  It is loud, has a wicked idle and is extremely fast, despite looking like a basically stock 1980 Z28.  It also handles very well due to the VB&P suspension and the wide tires.

Imperfections:
  • The paint is overall in very good condition but does have a few flaws.  The rear bumper has a few paint chips and scratches but they are not particularly noticeable due to size and location.  The right rear quarter panel has a light dent but looks easily repairable.
  • The oil sending unit is not functioning.
  • The parking brake has never been installed.
  • The windshield wipers do not function.  (No need...never drove it in the rain)
  • No heater is installed.  This is not a winter car.

GM Design shows what could have been and what might be

Thu, May 27 2021

We periodically like to check in with GM Design's Instagram account to see what they're cooking up. Even better is when we catch a glimpse of an alternate history of what legendary designers from The General's past were thinking, though those ideas may not have made it into production. This week, for example, the account posted some illustrations from George Camp, whose career at GM spanned nearly four decades, from 1963 to 2001. One of the renderings is of what appears to be a 1971-72 Pontiac GTO Judge, but with two headlights instead of the production unit's quad beams. The rear departs from the canonical version most dramatically, with a massive integrated wing. Other bits that didn't make the production cut include large side vents, a gill-like side marker and rectangular intakes below the headlights that wouldn't be out of place on a modern design today. Amazingly, from what we can make out of the date, it appears that the drawing was done sometime in 1965, which makes it quite prescient.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by GM Design (@generalmotorsdesign) There's also a very aerodynamic interpretation of a Corvette ZR-1. To our eyes it splits the difference between the 1986 Corvette Indy concept and a fourth-generation F-body Pontiac Firebird, so perhaps parts of Camp's work on this sketch did make it into physical form. There's also a radical sports car concept from May 1970 that resembles the Mazda RX-500 concept from the same year, a Syd Mead-looking Cadillac coupe, and an Oldsmobile with a cool take on the company's trademark waterfall grille and elements of the Colonnade Cutlass at the rear. Other recent posts include a FJ Cruiser-like off-road EV, a sleek coupe with the Chevy corporate grille, and a rendering of a Silverado-esque pickup that looks far better than the current production version.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by GM Design (@generalmotorsdesign) It's pretty easy to lose hours in the account, but it's always fascinating to see GM's visions of what could have been and what might be. Weekly Recap: Tesla loses money, still dominates the news

Sat, Aug 8 2015

Some people get an inordinate amount of attention. In politics, it's Donald Trump. In football, it's Jim Harbaugh. And in the auto world, it's Elon Musk and his always-fascinating electric car company, Tesla Motors. General Motors is spending $877 million to upgrade a factory. So what! US auto sales are up. Who cares? Tesla has a metal snake that will recharge your car! So was the week in Tesla – er, the industry. Snarkiness aside, Tesla did dominate the news cycle, led by the announcement the company lost $184 million in the second quarter. Tesla also said it expects to deliver between 50,000 and 55,000 vehicles this year, and is preparing for a full launch of the Model X crossover in September. Musk also made news during the earnings call by simply not answering a question about ride sharing, leading to speculation Tesla could be considering its own operation. While the financials were the arguably the most important company news, reports of a Model S cyber hacking were more compelling fodder for Tesla followers. Researchers were able to attack the sedan and bring it to a stop, though they required access to the car first. Tesla says it already has deployed a remedy for the situation. On a lighter note, Tesla published a video of its metal charger prototype that autonomously uncoils like a snake to power up the company's vehicles, provoking plenty of humorous comments and comparisons. Watch it and decide for yourself. While some of this might seem trivial, much of Tesla's recent attention has been warranted. It's the first startup US automaker in decades to launch from nothing and actually gain traction in the market. Sure, Musk is a lightning rod and Tesla always seems to be in the spotlight. But amid all of the publicity, it easy to lose sight of the new reality: Tesla is a force. OTHER NEWS & NOTES 2016 Chevy Volt lights up 106 MPGe The Chevy Volt's vitals are looking healthier for 2016. The second-generation plug-in hybrid racks up a gaudy 106 miles per gallon equivalent, which is an increase of eight MPGe from the 2015 model. The new Volt can travel 53 miles on electricity, a significant jump from the 2015 Volt's 38-mile range. The new car also has a 420-mile total range when factoring in the capability of the gasoline engine, which is 40 miles greater than the current car offers.

Camaro spy shots show subtly different grille, front fascia

Sun, 03 Feb 2013

It looks like there some changes in store for the Chevrolet Camaro - the only thing is that we just don't know what Chevy has up its sleeve. Looking at these spy shots, we'd initially be inclined to think that there is just a minor facelift or a new special edition, but upon closer inspection, there are a few oddities about this car that definitely have us intrigued.
The most obvious difference on this prototype is the slightly restyled front fascia with a smaller lower air inlet and the two-bar grille. Then we get to some of the car's mysterious details. For starters, this fascia has the SS vent above the grille, but it looks to be blocked off. Granted this could just be a one-off piece used for testing. What really piqued our interest was at the rear of the car where it has quad exhaust outlets that are used on the ZL1. Could this be the LS7-powered Camaro that we reported on back in December?
At this point, your guess is as good as ours as to what we're looking at here, so let us know in the comments what you think this could be.
