Up for auction is my 1987 Chevrolet V20 3/4ton 4x4 pickup which came from factory fully loaded with the Silverado package. I bought the truck 6 years ago from the second owner who bought it in 1988. During the past 6 years I have taken the time to do multiple upgrades, basically every part of the drivetrain is either rebuilt or brand new. I absolutely love this truck, but the reality of it is I need a crew cab to comfortably fit my growing family. The list of improvements is long, I will do my best to do a break down of every aspect of it. I would say that the only downside is the paint. It has what I would consider a decent drivers quality paint job. It's showing general wear, scratches, and what I consider minor dents, the worst dent is on the passenger side door, see picture. All that being said it still draws compliments on a weekly basis. On the plus side this truck lived most it's life in Southern Oregon and is 100% rust free. This truck has always been adult owned, it has never been wheeled, thrashed or abused. Being a huge advocate of preventative maintenance, I have always kept up on oil changes and other basic up keep. I even went as far as replacing both door strikers and dome light switches in the door jamb.

The most notable part of this truck is the Vortec 5.7L 350 conversion. Back in 2010 I started having significant issues with the original TBI motor. After weighing my options trying to find the greatest power and reliability for my money, I came across a wrecked 1997 chevy van with a GM Good Wrench Motor in it. At the time it was wrecked the motor only had 40,000 miles on it. I took the motor and had the wiring harness modified to be stand alone. I was able to do a clean functional swap, the motor looks like it was there from factory. I was even able to instal the Vortec computer under the dash where the original TBI computer resided. I rebuilt the entire fuel delivery system to accommodate the higher fuel pressure the Vortec needs to run. Vortecs require roughly 64 pounds of fuel pressure where the original TBI only needed 7-12 PSI. The truck now has one in line fuel pump capable of an 80 PSI output, complete with an inline fuel filter just prior to it. The truck runs flawlessly off of either of the two 18 gallon saddle tanks. I also installed a K&N cold air intake, and a single 3" exhaust with a flowmaster muffler with a high flow "honeycomb" style catalytic converter to comply with Oregons DEQ requirements. This truck has a strong and powerful sounds thats not obnoxious. When I installed the motor I also replaced the stock core support and grill with one from a 1990 silverado suburban, giving it the more modern look. Also it has a brand new 104amp alternator with dual batteries.

The Vortec is backed by a 700R4 transmission that was completely rebuilt prior to being installed. It was gone through front to back, including a new H.D. torque converter, new clutches, new pump, etc and I put a B&M deep oil pan that holds 4 extra quarts of fluid. The 700R4 is a great fit for this truck, it has the lowest ratio first gear available from any GM transmission while also having an overdrive gear that lets the truck cruise comfortably at 70 MPH. I purchased a stand alone wiring kit from Bowtie Overdrives and opted for the optional tow/lock kit. This kit allows the driver to flip a switch that locks the torque converter, giving you better power delivery while building less heat. I also installed an auxiliary transmission cooler with a 10" electric fan to assist with cooling. I also modified the gauge cluster and installed a transmission temperate gauge in the lower left hand corner, see pic above. It has an NP 241C transfer case.

I replaced the rear "semi- floater" axle with a full floater corporate 14 bolt axe. Prior to putting it in the truck I upgraded the drum brakes with a rear disc brake kit I bought from the 4wd factory. This kit uses brand new 1979 eldorado cadillac style calipers with Emergency brake capabilities. I also replaced to lighter duty 10 bolt front axle with a "big hub" dana 44. Before installation I completely disassembled and rebuilt it, including all new bearings, axle u joints, inner axle seals, tie rod, drag link, rotors calipers, brake pads, and lines. Both axles are open (non-posi) and have 4:10 gears.

The truck has a custom 3" suspension lift, using new stock style front leaf springs with drop perches and lengthened shackles. I initially had conventional style lift springs up front that caused horrible bump steer while pulling a trailer or hauling my camper. The drop perches are built out of 1/4" thick steel, and utilize the factory perch mounting holes. I saved all the stock hangers, shackles and the superlift lift springs, so if you don't like the custom mounts all that can be easily reinstalled.  It has 2.5" blocks in the rear with firestone "ride-rite" airbag overloads. I just had the rear driveline lengthened to compensate for the lift and balanced by driveline specialties of Portland Oregon. While I had that apart I installed a new slip shaft bushing in the transfercase.

The interior has been upgraded as well. It utilizes the dash pad and gauge bezel from a 1990 silverado suburban, The door panels are brand new, and the seat was re covered to match the door panel cloth inserts. Also when the seat was recovered I had new foam installed as well. I customized the head liner to make use of the suburbans grab handles and visors, passenger side visor is complete with vanity mirror that even lights up! I also grafted in an overhead center console from a 2005 chevy silver ado. Its great place to store your wallet and the map lights are functional. All the power windows and door locks work, the passenger side window opens a bit slow however.  I took the time and replaced all of the window weather seals and anti-rattle strips, theres no air leaks in this trucks cab! I recently replaced the Air conditioning condenser, manifold, evaporator and system oil but have not yet had a chance to have it evacuated and charged. It also has a tilt column with the 1990 sport style steering wheel. It also has a trailer brake unit, pioneer cd/mp3 satellite capable head unit with ipod hook up, eclipse amp and 3 way eclipse component speakers.

The truck also has in bed wiring for a camper/fifth wheel and comes with custom made frame mounted camper tie downs that work great.

As I had mentioned before the only thing lacking in this truck its a new paint job. That being said I have been stock piling all kinds of parts these last 6 years in preparation. Included with the purchase of this truck is
-Brand new carpet kit, with enough to do the back cab wall behind the seat.
- Good used GM front fenders hood and doors. It was my intention to prep the body panels prior to paint, reducing down time. It's my daily driver.
-NIB tinted sliding rear window with gasket
-NIB power window regulators with motors.
- new silverado badges
-Powder coated hood hinges.

I would not hesitate to hop in this truck and cruise across the country, it is solid, reliable and runs great! You can go two ways with this truck, leave it as is and enjoy a solid comfortable daily driver or do what i no longer have time for and top it off with the pain job that it deserves, making it a true one of a kind head turner. I've tried to describe this truck to the best of my abilities, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. I have set the reserve at what I feel is a reasonable price considering its age and what all has been done to it. $500 deposit do within 48 hours of auctions end. My time is valuable as I'm sure yours is, please only bid with the intention to buy. This is being sold as is, no warranty expressed or implied. Paypal or cash payment, no checks or money orders. I can help arrange shipping if needed but only upon receiving full clear payment. Pic 9 is the truck when I first got it. The camper (pic 10) does NOT come with the truck, it has been long ago sold its just an example of how the camper tie downs work. Thanks for your consideration.

Recharge Wrap-up: Chevy teases Bolt driving range, China pursues EV subsidy cheaters

Tue, Sep 13 2016

Chevy is teasing the Bolt's driving range, which it is set to reveal on Tuesday. It will certainly be able to travel more than 200 miles between charges, but the second and third digits in that value, as it stands today, are still question marks. On its Facebook page, Chevrolet is asking fans to try to guess the official range. Of course, Tesla fans have already started posting their own snide remarks in the comments. Chevy fans are certainly hoping to see the Bolt's range eclipse that of Tesla's upcoming Model 3, which the California-based automaker puts at 215 miles. See Chevy's post on Facebook to make your own guess, or check back there (or here at AutoblogGreen) for the official number once it is unveiled. Fuel cell company PowerCell Sweden says it has signed an agreement with a Chinese company to make range extenders for commercial trucks. The unnamed Chinese customer has placed an order and signed a memorandum of understanding with PowerCell Sweden, and the partners will develop methanol reformer fuel cell range extenders for electric distribution trucks. "Our unique expertise in fuel cells and reformer technology is receiving an increasing attention worldwide and we are truly pleased to get another Chinese order," says PowerCell Sweden Sales Director Andreas Boden. Read more at Green Car Congress, or from PowerCell. China is accusing major automakers of violating EV subsidy rules. After the country's Ministry of Finance penalized five companies with fines and, in one case, revocation of production license for subsidy cheats, China has since named 20 more potential violators, including Nissan, Hyundai, JAC, and a subsidiary of BYD. Of the first five companies to be punished under the investigation, Suzhou Gemsea Coach Manufacturing is having its production license revoked, while four others, including a subsidiary of Chery, are being fined for about half of the subsidies received. The scandal is bad new for China's subsidy program, which has helped spur sales of plug-in vehicles. Read more from Fortune, or at Hybrid Cars.

GM executive chief EV engineer says reducing cost of plug-in vehicles is 'huge priority'

Mon, Mar 17 2014

As we know, another major automaker investing heavily in electrified vehicles is General Motors, and it's doing things much differently than rivals BMW, Ford or Nissan. The Chevrolet Volt extended-range EV is a modest seller at its $35,000 sticker price but a huge hit with owners. The Chevy Spark BEV, still in limited availability, puts smiley faces on its owners and drivers. The just-introduced Cadillac ELR, a sharp-looking, fun-driving $76,000 luxocoupe take on the Volt's EREV mechanicals, has admittedly low sales expectations. With this interesting trio in showrooms and much more in the works, the third vehicle electrification leader I collared for an interview at Detroit's North American International Auto Show (see #1 and #2) was Pam Fletcher, GM's executive chief engineer, Electrified Vehicles. ABG: Why do your EREVs need four-cylinder power to extend their range when BMW's i3 makes do with an optional 650 cc two-banger? "We designed [the Volt and the ELR] to go anywhere, any time" - Pam Fletcher PF: I get that question all the time: why not something smaller? You don't really need that much. You use the electric to its ability, then you just need to limp. But we designed those cars to go anywhere, any time, and we don't want their performance to be compromised. If you're driving through the mountains, we don't want you to be crawling up grades, or to be limited on any terrain. So it's optimized to be able to travel literally the biggest grades and mountain roads around the globe at posted speeds. Because what if you can't? Another good reason: when the engine is on, you have to run it wide open throttle, max speed, most of the time. And while we can do a lot with acoustics, and the ELR has active noise cancelation, a small-displacement, low cylinder-count engine at high speed, high load all the time isn't something you want to live with. That's how we came up with the balance we did among the key factors of performance, NVH [noise, vibration and harshness] and range. ABG: Where you go from here? Is the range-extender engine due for an update? PF: We know and love the current Volt, and there is still a lot of acclaim about it, so we think it's a good recipe. But we are heavily in the midst of engineering the next-generation car, which I think everyone will love and be excited about.
