up for grabs is a neat old 1965 Chevrolet C-10 (1/2 ton) that came from the factory fairly rarely equipped in that it still has its #'s matching original 283 V8 and is a factory automatic, and it has the rarer and more highly sought after big rear window and is a Custom Cab truck. It is a longbed but it had a camper on it most of its life so the bed is in rare beautiful shape w/ most of the wood still in it, perfect undented inside panels and a perfect tailgate. This truck has an uncut radio hole with the original AM radio still in it, and no rust above the visors or outside the cab roof which is hard to find on a big window truck. Some kids had the truck for a while and they took the camper off and removed the original 2bbl intake and carb in favor of an aluminum intake, and when the truck was sold they kept the carb, so it needs a carb to run. Needs a radiator put back in it too. Everything else is there and will be easy to get running again. Was last driven approx 5 yrs ago. Details below. Call with questions 256 486 1988

The GOOD: The bed is in unusually nice shape and has a perfect tailgate and inner box. The truck is a Custom Cab so it has all the cool chrome stuff and aluminum grille. The 283 V8 is said to run well and has the ultra-rare "WE" suffix code which denotes it as a correct 65 truck 283 w/ Powerglide trans. Has the original factory V8 rear end. Has no rust through in the roof or inside above the visors. All glass is good and back window is factory "Soft Ray" Tinted glass (very rare). The radio hole is uncut and the original radio is still in it. The whole truck is very straight with only 1 paintjob largely sprayed directly over the factory red paint. Has the rarer deluxe guage package instead of idiot lights. rust in the cab floor along the sill plates is normal and will not be too bad to fix.

The BAD: The cab needs what is called "outer cab floor" patch panels (see LMC truck, Jim Carter or other aftermarket catalog) inner and outer rockers and the front cab support on the drivers side all replaced. Needs minor rust repair to the hood's nose towards the pass side park light and pass side rear support area. Some of the bed wood is rotted out. Truck needs a carburator, tune up parts and a radiator to run. Will certainly need a brake job too. Needs rust repair to both front fenders and some average door bottom repair. Has a thin area of bondo (not thick or reconstructive) on the drivers qtr behind the wheel opening - otherwise appears to be 99% bondo free. This was used to smooth a light dent - when you feel behind it you can feel no dents or serious damage - very straight actually.

Look at the pictures and I think you will see this truck is begging for a restoration and will make someone a very beautiful truck for a lot less cost than a lot of poorer condition trucks you see like it for this price range. Call Steve 256 486 1988 to come see it or ask questions....

Chevy might've pulled out of NASCAR if it weren't for new Gen 6 car

Wed, 20 Feb 2013

We've been on the fence with NASCAR for some time now. On one hand, it's some of the closest racing anywhere in motorsports, with actual passing and door-handle-to-door-handle action as a matter of course. But on the other, it's become template racing - a personality-driven sport more about the drivers than any sort of loyalty to a particular automaker. The Car Of Tomorrow format really rammed that message home, with a racecar's identity coming down to little more than headlamp stickers slapped on the nose. That's not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but we've wondered for some time what's in it for the automakers, who pay big money to stay in a series that has had little increasingly little do with street car sales, let alone innovation.
Apparently General Motors was beginning to wonder the same thing. In a new ESPN report, Rick Hendrick, team owner of Hendrick Motorsports, suggests that GM would have seriously considered leaving NASCAR if it wasn't for the move away from the COT to the new Gen 6 racer. According to Hendrick, GM North America boss Mark Reuss spearheaded the charge away from the 2007 COT and toward a racecar with clearer automaker ties - cars like the new Chevrolet SS racer shown above. Learn more about the fight for a closer-to-production look in the ESPN story at the link.
Now, if we could just get more rear-wheel drive V8 coupes into showrooms....

GM Design shows what could have been and what might be

Thu, May 27 2021

We periodically like to check in with GM Design's Instagram account to see what they're cooking up. Even better is when we catch a glimpse of an alternate history of what legendary designers from The General's past were thinking, though those ideas may not have made it into production. This week, for example, the account posted some illustrations from George Camp, whose career at GM spanned nearly four decades, from 1963 to 2001. One of the renderings is of what appears to be a 1971-72 Pontiac GTO Judge, but with two headlights instead of the production unit's quad beams. The rear departs from the canonical version most dramatically, with a massive integrated wing. Other bits that didn't make the production cut include large side vents, a gill-like side marker and rectangular intakes below the headlights that wouldn't be out of place on a modern design today. Amazingly, from what we can make out of the date, it appears that the drawing was done sometime in 1965, which makes it quite prescient.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by GM Design (@generalmotorsdesign) There's also a very aerodynamic interpretation of a Corvette ZR-1. To our eyes it splits the difference between the 1986 Corvette Indy concept and a fourth-generation F-body Pontiac Firebird, so perhaps parts of Camp's work on this sketch did make it into physical form. There's also a radical sports car concept from May 1970 that resembles the Mazda RX-500 concept from the same year, a Syd Mead-looking Cadillac coupe, and an Oldsmobile with a cool take on the company's trademark waterfall grille and elements of the Colonnade Cutlass at the rear. Other recent posts include a FJ Cruiser-like off-road EV, a sleek coupe with the Chevy corporate grille, and a rendering of a Silverado-esque pickup that looks far better than the current production version.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by GM Design (@generalmotorsdesign) It's pretty easy to lose hours in the account, but it's always fascinating to see GM's visions of what could have been and what might be. 2016 Chevy Volt rated at 106 MPGe, 53 miles of pure EV range

Tue, Aug 4 2015

Following a string of rumors, Chevrolet and the Environmental Protection Agency have released official fuel economy numbers for the second-generation Volt. As was reported earlier today, the new and improved hybrid will cover 53 miles on pure electric power. As Chevy tells it, first-gen Volt owners cover about 80 percent of their mileage on EV power alone, so the 40-percent increase from the second-gen should lead to an even bigger reduction in gas-powered Volt mileage. Chevy expects some 90 percent of mileage to come from a plug with its new 2016 model. This newfound EV range comes thanks to the 2016 Volt's 18.4-kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery. Rated at 106 MPGe by the feds – exactly what was promised by a June leak – the 2016 Volt improves nicely on the current model's 17.1-kWh, 98-MPGe battery back. There's also a marked improvement when relying on the gas-powered on-board generator. The 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine will happily run on regular fuel and return a still-impressive 42 miles per gallon combined rating once the battery's state of charge is depleted. Expect the freeway to cruise to be even better, although Chevy isn't ready to say by how much. Fully charged and with a full tank, drivers should expect to cover 420 miles, a 40-mile improvement over the current model. Scroll down for the official press release from Chevrolet Related Video: The Results Are In: More Range for the 2016 Volt EPA-estimated pure electric range is 53 miles DETROIT – The 2016 Volt is engineered to offer customers more of what they want: range, range and more range. The Volt's all-new second-generation Voltec extended range electric propulsion system delivers 53 miles of pure EV range, based on EPA testing. That is nearly a 40-percent improvement over the first generation Volt. Chevrolet expects many next-generation Volt owners will use power solely from their battery for more than 90 percent of trips. Today, Volt owners use battery power on 80 percent of their trips. This means that the average Volt owner may expect to travel well over 1,000 miles between gas fill ups, if they charge regularly. For the first 53 miles, the Volt can drive gas and tailpipe-emissions free using a full charge of electricity stored in its new 18.4-kWh lithium-ion battery, which is rated at a combined 106 MPGe, or gasoline equivalent. When the Volt's battery runs low, a gas-powered generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range for a total of 420 miles on a full tank.
