Love this car, but here it goes (maybe) - keeping wouldn't be painful.

Background - These are 'facts' as best known by me. This car was built in Florida by an engineer in 1991 - 1992. It was purchased by owner from a colleague whose sister had owned it since new. However, it had not been driven since 1983 (8 yrs.). It was originally a 6 cyl automatic. The body was refurbished and painted in the original Erskine White. Frame was modified / rebuilt along with front disc brakes. Motor housing and underside of hood were also painted new black. New higher capacity radiator installed. A 456 rear was the choice for the monster 427. The interior was professionally updated with beautiful medium grey pleated velour seats and combo velour / naugahyde door panels. Rally 15' wheels now wearing Dunlop 245 / 60's. Said to be balanced and blue printed - don't know for sure. The car was the featured Cover Car on YesterYears  Chevys July 1995 - have a copy.
Now, get this - the guy had 427 L88 that was donated by a 1968 Corvette and rebuilt as a project two years earlier just sitting in his garage. This is a TRUE L88, not a claim to be. For the many folks that are not familiar with the heritage / specs of this engine the details are: only 216 L88's were produced for a limited number of 1967-1969 Corvettes - there were 20 in '67, the rest in 68-69. It is best described as a full race motor. The L88 had an insane 12.5 to one compression ratio, racing spec hi-lift cam, high-flow Winters Snowflake Aluminum Heads and Winters Aluminum Intake holding down a 850 - 4 barrel (this one changed over to 750). It was listed as 430 HP but they are known to have been dyno-tested up to 560 HP. I don't doubt it based on it's behavior.  If ordered it came absent of radio, heater, chokes and fan shroud.
In the same year these Corvettes were offered with L71 427's, tri-power, 11 to 1 comp, and were rated as 435 HP @ 5,600. So, people naturally went for the 435 hp rather than the 430 - and at lower cost.
So, why did GM do this ? For a variety of reasons - didn't want this motor in the wrong hands, needed to conform to gov't regulations, conform to both insurance regs, as well as Chevrolet's own HP policy. How did they pull this off ? Simply - the rating was done at approximately 1,000 rpm lower than the 435 L71 (5,600 rpm) - it was manipulated !

What's been done since - I have recently changed the the rear to 308. No highway driving with that 456. New Hookers, springs, shocks, stereo.
Motor was pulled last year - leaking pan. All gaskets replaced, heads / cyl walls inspected, block changed to studed bolts. Comp tested - all there. Trans inspected - all good. Glove box door is mine - "Top Cat" - keeping but will replace with original same as dash.

Condition - Motor is just dynamite ! No issues at all. The trans is in great shape, shifts like a dream. Second gear bites down big. The paint is old - 20 years - that simple. Worn, some chips, but really nice patina. Like it as is - but repaint could be a 'get to it' and would not be a big spend. There is an idiot dent in the lower right quarter, little rust showing up on the bottom side of rear windshield and in the driver door jam (pics will show). The hood sits up high at the back end. Never tried to fix it, but no doubt an adjustment of springs / latch.

What Else - The car was purchased at Daytona Turkey Run in 1997 and stayed in Florida. It had an appraised value of 19,500 at the time. It was repurchased in 1999 and deported to New Jersey. It was driven here regularly for a while, then laid up (garage, covered) unregistered for some 3 years. Then I got it !!! Drive it like it should be driven. Take on the highway some, mostly just around. It is definitely stretched and put through its paces - but not beat up on. Rarely run it up to 4,000 rpm. It is a blast. Have had other muscles but this one tops all. It is built to go, and then to show.

Bottom Line - This a just a Bad Boy.

This car is also being sold locally and I reserve the right to sell outside the auction or to pull the listing.

2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel arrives with 42 mpg for $25,695*

Thu, 07 Feb 2013

The last time General Motors had a diesel passenger car in the US, it was the 1.8-liter 1986 Chevette. At the 2013 Chicago Auto Show today, GM is unveiling the much-anticipated 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel. The compact bows with a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that boasts 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with full twist coming on at just 2,000 rpm. What's more, the common-rail, direct-injection diesel features an overboost function that allows the engine to deliver up to 280 lb-ft of torque for 10 seconds at a time. Even with 10 more horsepower and 110 more pound-feet of torque than the available turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder in the Cruze, the 2.0-liter diesel engine can return up to 42 mpg (highway) bolted to its six-speed automatic transmission.
If you're counting, that figure meets the less powerful Cruze Eco with a six-speed manual transmission. More importantly, the auto transmission Cruze Diesel matches its main competition, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, in highway fuel economy. The Cruze 2.0 TD (as it will be badged) can also handle up to 20 percent biodiesel (B20), whereas the Jetta is rated only for B5. General Motors has not released city fuel economy for its newest diesel, but we do know how much it will cost you to jump behind the driver's seat.
GM will kindly ask for $25,695, plus an $810 destination fee. That marks a $2,115 premium over a loaded Cruze LTZ Auto and $2,640 more than the Jetta TDI, though the MSRP will net you a leather interior, 17-inch alloy wheels and an Aero Performance Package, as well as a two-year maintenance plan and five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Compared to the gas-powered Cruze, you also lose a couple cubic feet of rear cargo space thanks to a 17-liter diesel emission fluid tank. That urea fluid, which helps put the clean in clean diesel, will need to be refilled at least every 10,000 miles.

Recharge Wrap-up: Ford HQ gets giant solar array, Chevy City Express gets 24 MPG city

Sat, Aug 16 2014

Ford will be building Michigan's largest solar array at its Dearborn headquarters. With funding from DTE Energy, the solar carport will provide covered parking, as well 30 charging stations for electric vehicles. The array is expected to generate 1.13 million kWh per year for Ford's operations, and offset 794 metric tons of carbon emissions. Read more in the press release below. Chevrolet announced the fuel economy for the 2015 City Express, at 25 mpg combined. The cargo van is rated at 24 mpg in the city, and 26 mpg on the highway. Chevy credits the van's inline four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission for its impressive city mileage. For its customers - which are mainly businesses - "The fuel economy of the City Express will help stretch their dollar at the pump and give them the flexibility to invest the savings back into their business," says Chevrolet's Ed Peper. The City Express starts at $22,950. Read more in the press release below. Engineers at the University of Wisconsin have developed an efficient engine that runs on a diesel-gas blend. The engine, which uses a computer to control the blend proportions, is about 15 percent more efficient than the any diesel engine according to mechanical engineering professor Rolf Reitz. The team has put the experimental reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) engine in a demonstration car - a 2009 Saturn. "This vehicle can do 50 miles per gallon," says Reitz, who believes the system could be improved further. Read more at Wisconsin Public Radio. The Southeast Alternative Fuel Conference and Expo will take place in October in Raleigh, North Carolina. Held at the NC Clean Energy Technology Center from October 22-24, the event will feature a variety of exhibitors, speakers and, most importantly, alternatively powered vehicles. "The three day conference will be a one-stop shop for fleet and transportation related decision makers to learn about return on investment, efficiency and alternative transportation fuels such as biodiesel, electricity, ethanol, propane and natural gas," says Anne Tazewell of the NC Clean Energy Technology Center. If you can't make it to Raleigh for the Expo, you can still enter to win a free two-year lease of a Nissan Leaf at the Center's website. Learn more about the event in the press release, below.

GM might outsource vans to AM General

Thu, Nov 26 2015

General Motors will possibly boost production of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon at the Wentzville Assembly Plant in Missouri by contracting out some commercial van manufacturing to AM General. Demand for the two midsize trucks continues to boom, and GM would like to take advantage of the strong market for them. The possible deal came to light in a letter to workers at the factory, according to Automotive News. "This potential partnership would free up production capacity and allow the organization to capitalize on our ability to build midsize trucks to further satisfy customer demand," a portion of the document allegedly said. AM General would reportedly only take over assembly of the cutaway versions of the Chevy Express and GMC Savana. Customers and critics have quickly embraced the latest Colorado and Canyon since their introduction. The Chevy just won back-to-back Motor Trend Truck of the Year awards. GM also had to add a third shift and extra workers in 2014 just to keep up with demand. The Wentzville plant even increased employment on the weekends earlier in 2015 to assemble an extra 2,000 of the trucks each month. While the two pickups boom, deliveries for the Chevy Express and GMC Savana are down 26.9 percent and 26.6 percent respectively through the first 10 months of the year. GM doesn't break out numbers for the cutaway versions, but they make up about a third of production, according to Automotive News. AM General built the Humvee for the US military and does some contract work with automakers. For example, the company's Indiana factory now produces the Mercedes-Benz R-Class for export to China. Here's hoping this potential deal will help both GM and AM General keep their factories humming. Related Video:
