1957 Chevrolet 210 Station Wagon. California car, built in Arizona, with rust-free sheet metal, all it's original tinted glass, CA frame rails and bumpers. It came to Connecticut in the early 80s with a 283 and Muncie 4 speed and faded original Dusk Pearl and India Ivory paint. It was a low mileage car to begin with.  After using a few years as a "driver", we took it all down to restore it's beauty and freshen up the mechanics. Every piece of this car has been disassembled, sand blasted, primed, painted, and reassembled. All new bearings, bushings, brakes, exhaust, etc. was done. The engine was put into another driver and this all new old school 327 with tri-power Rochester carburetors and an RV cam replaced the old 283. The Muncie 4 speed was also completely gone thru and shifts like butter with a vintage Hurst shifter.  The body and all the sheet metal were soda blasted to eliminate distortion and professionally jambed and painted it's factory original colors. All new or rechromed original trim and bumpers were fitted to the body and the chassis and underside painted. The seats and interior panels were recovered in a late 50s hot rod style, the headliner is the original one. It rides on Radir 14 inch wheels with  1 inch white wall radials. Check out the photos for the detailing, new rubber parts, fit and finish- We didn't take any short cuts or try to save money half way thru.

The object of the restoration was to preserve the wagon, yet kick it up a notch to make it a better driving and more eye appealing car. Another-words, it's not your grampa's grocery getter. The combination of the color and drive-train  and  affection that everyone has for an old wagon makes this a crowd pleaser. Take the family, your friends, the dog ANYWHERE. This car was built to be seen and enjoyed and reliable. Don't let the 3 carbs fool you. It idles at 900 RPM and is the equivalent of a 4 barrel in CFM. So being a standard transmission, it gets 20 MPG, and for a period hot rod that's terrific. And it will get up and go, you control the performance. It will chirp 1st and 2nd if you want to be a gear head again for a few moments.

The best description of the ride and handling is that " it drives and steers, etc. like a brand new 1957 Chevy." It really is impressive. It has about 2000 miles on it since it was done, and that was 12 years ago. This car was never to be sold, but I am currently building a 32 Ford old school coupe and need to make room for it. I hope it comes out half as nice as this one did. It's nice to have an old school rod that you can work on yourself, that's how it all started right? Souping up the old mans Chevy !!

The buy it now price is $28,500 and includes the rear fender skirts. I can only imagine what it would cost to have someone duplicate this now.  I have a set of 15 inch Rallye wheels with Moon centers and white letter tires that were on it for the first 8 years and would sell it for $27,000 with those if you want to save some money. GM: Without LG Chem, we couldn't build Bolt EV [UPDATE]

Wed, Oct 21 2015

It's absolutely no surprise that General Motors has a thing for LG Corp. The Detroit automaker and the Korean parts supplier have been working in public on electric vehicles ever since it was announced that LG Chem would supply the battery cells for the Chevy Volt in 2009. LG Chem was even named GM's 2010 Supplier of the Year. But, yesterday, the connection between the two companies was strengthened with the announcement that LG Electronics would be supplying a number of components for the upcoming Chevy Bolt electric vehicle. The Bolt is expected to be able to go about 200 miles and will carry a price tag of about $30,000 (after incentives) when it arrives in 2017 or so. LG's new components can be found almost everywhere in the Bolt. They include the battery pack and the battery heater, a new motor, the power inverter module, the electric climate control system compressor, the on-board charger, high-power distribution module, the accessory power module, and power line communication module. Oh, and then there are LG Electronics' advanced display technologies like the new instrument cluster and a new infotainment cluster. LG Electronics also supplies parts for the 4G LTE OnStar system, just like it does in other new Chevys. If that all sounds like a lot of components to you, you're right. Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president of global product development, purchasing and supply chain, said that without the expanded relationship with LG, GM would not be able to bring the Bolt to market (insert old ironic quote link here). "I think GM was lacking that [electrification knowledge] in a very complete way for many years, I'll just be frank about that," Reuss said. "I also think that on an electrified basis, this requires a long-term commitment and trust that sometimes is violated on a more short-term, regular, traditional basis. I think we have found something completely different with LG and I think that has become a widely talked about and duplicated want from our purchasing and corporate standpoint with our supply base." The "this" that Reuss is talking about here is the OEM-supplier relationship, something has evolved with the LG-GM situation. Previously, the automaker-supplier relationship used to be more like a dictator telling underlings what he needed, Reuss said, and that was a bad idea. "Today's competitive landscape requires a different approach, especially in electrified vehicles," he said.

GM Ultium tech can scavenge heat from everywhere, even you

Mon, Apr 25 2022

GM likes to give us tidbits about its Ultium platform from time to time, and today it’s telling us about the platformÂ’s ability to capture waste heat from the propulsion system. In addition to capturing from the propulsion system, it can also capture humidity from both inside and outside the vehicle and even from passengersÂ’ body heat. Yes, you, your family and/or your friends are a usable heat source as far as GM EVs are concerned. It then deploys the heat in an advantageous way. If at this point, youÂ’re screaming, "Heat pump!" youÂ’d be right. WeÂ’re talking about an elaborate heat pump system that GM is using for its Ultium-based vehicles. Every Ultium-based GM vehicle gets this system that is covered by 11 patents and four publications. The waste heat it collects is used in a number of ways, but its primary use is to heat the cabin quickly and efficiently. GM claims it can heat the cabin of its Ultium-based vehicles quicker than vehicles with traditional internal combustion engines. Plus, when put to use, GM claims that using the heat pump provides its EVs with up to 10% more range than theyÂ’d have without. Beyond heating the cabin, the heat pump is capable of putting waste heat to use by preheating the battery prior to charging so that you can charge quicker. The system can even cool the propulsion system in preparation for Watts to Freedom (WTF) launch control starts. GM says this was vital in helping the Hummer EV achieve its bonkers 0-60 mph time of about 3 seconds. “Having a ground-up EV architecture gives us the freedom to build in standard features like UltiumÂ’s energy recovery capabilities,” said Doug Parks, GM executive VP of global product development, purchasing and supply chain. “This helps us squeeze more efficiency, performance and overall customer benefit out of our EVs.” GM says itÂ’s been developing heat pump technology since the EV1 and its heat pump. This is the modern evolution of that technology, and GM says itÂ’s going to be implemented in every Ultium-based vehicle as a standard feature.
