What's New Now in its third model year on the market, the Cadillac SRX undergoes a few minor changes. The suspension has been lowered slightly to provide what Cadillac touts as the lowest step-in height in the segment. The move further enhances the vehicle's handling by lowering the center of gravity. A new standard power liftgate, an enhanced optional interior wood trim package, a Cashmere interior scheme, and new exterior colors are other changes for 2006. Overview Cadillac helped pioneer the Midsize Premium Crossover Utility market when it debuted the SRX in 2003. Its success has prompted other carmakers to jump into the fray with similarly designed crossovers that combine the cargo-carrying capability of a conventional truck-based SUV with the driving dynamics of a refined luxury sedan. The SRX is based on GM's highly praised Sigma vehicle platform and is available in rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. Its long wheelbase, low center of gravity, strong powertrain options, and sophisticated stability technologies create a driving experience that is difficult for truck-based SUVs to match. The SRX comes in two trims based on engine choices: V-6 and V-8. V-6 trims come with a 250-hp, 3.6L engine, leather seating, side air bags for front occupants, head curtain air bags for the first two rows, and OnStar. V-8 versions come with the same amenities, but replace the V-6 with a 320-hp, 4.6L Northstar engine and add seat heaters, a power front-passenger seat, power-adjustable pedals, wood trim, and a 6-disc CD changer. Both engines feature variable valve timing and a five-speed automatic transmission with a manual-shift mode. The V-8, however, offers 25 percent more torque, which contributes to the SRX's maximum 4,520-pound towing capacity. Four-channel StabiliTrak stability control is standard, while an electronically controlled, magnetic-fluid based, real-time suspension damping system (called Magnetic Ride Control) is optional. Cadillac says that this system is the world's fastest-reacting suspension control system; the system reads the road surface and makes adjustments-up to 1,000 times per second-and is imperceptible to the driver. The SRX also boasts the largest available sunroof system in the segment, called UltraView. It provides 5.6 square feet of near-convertible open air above the first two rows. Those opting for the power-folding, two-person, third-row bench can also get a separate glass roof over it. Both overhead systems come with power shades. The Competition Eleven models comprise the Midsize Premium Crossover Utility Vehicle segment in which the SRX competes, with more entrants expected during the 2006 calendar year. This relatively new segment caters to those who desire the handling and fuel economy of a luxury sedan, coupeed with the utility value of an SUV or minivan. Outpacing every vehicle in the segment is the Lexus RX Series, with 108,775 units sold in 2005, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report.SM Next closest was the Acura MDX, with 57,948 sales, followed by the BMW X5 with 37,598. Cadillac sold 22,999 units of the SRX in calendar year 2005. New additions in 2006 include the 2007 Audi Q7 (on sale now) and Lincoln MKX (available Fall 2006). |

GM recalls full-size truck, SUVs and vans over faulty shifter mechanism
Mon, 07 Jan 2013Twelve different General Motors vehicles from the 2013 model year, up to 54,686 units in total, are being recalled over two potential issues with their steering columns. The models in question, all full-size trucks, SUVs or vans, are the: Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Savana, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL.
The affected vehicles were built with a fractured parking lock cable or "a malformed steering column lock actuator gear in the lock module assembly." As a consequence, they could shift out of park without the brake pedal being applied or with the key removed or in the off position.
A bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that the recall should begin on January 17. GM will notify owners, at which time they can take their vehicles to their dealers for repair free of charge. Have a look at the bulletin below for more information.
Cadillac's XT6 is not, for better or worse, a mini Escalade
Mon, Jan 21 2019In its latest attempt at reinvention, Cadillac has created a trio of admirable sedans — the ATS, CTS, and CT6 — cars that challenge or beat the competition on their own terms, and do so with audacious exterior styling rendered in a distinctly American idiom. But American customers have been ditching cars in favor of high-riding crossovers, and what Cadillac has not had up until recently is a suite of appropriately (or bizarrely) sized crossovers to offer potential consumers, something competitors have been deploying for years or even decades. And so the new, full-size(ish) three-row Cadillac XT6, unveiled officially last week at an event in Detroit, is intended to help address the premier domestic automotive luxury brand's current product shortcomings. "I guess we had so many priorities and had to decide what's the most important thing," says Andrew Smith, Cadillac's executive director of design. "We decided to approach this one from an interior perspective, to do things like provide ease of use for owners, upgrade the infotainment, and allow time for ourselves to learn lessons from the launch of XT4." The XT6 doesn't exactly break any new ground within the segment, but that's not necessarily a criticism. Though huge from a sales perspective, the two-box crossover category is not the industry's leader in beauty or innovation. Still, Caddy's most recent previous crossover, the size-Small XT4, managed to create handsome proportions and a premium appearance at first glance. The XT6 doesn't feel quite so ambitious or coherent, with a front end that is at once sneering and soft, a lengthy flank that feints at muscularity without delivering, and a rather abrupt tailgate that blends the rectilinear and the anodyne. Maybe consumers won't notice? "Our biggest challenge was giving the vehicle a character that works on this scale and platform," says Smith. "We want to make sure all of our cars feel different. We didn't want it to be a mini Escalade. No one wants a mini anything. But we wanted to give it Escalade presence, but in scale. So it's this combination of nice, and aggressive. I'm convinced we will sell more than we think we'll sell." Maybe he's right, and we definitely don't see this vehicle cannibalizing sales of the Escalade. People who want a bold Cadillac can still get that one, and will have a brand new option later this year, we expect, when a new Escalade is released.
Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R named Road & Track Performance Car of the Year
Mon, Nov 9 2015With a 526-horsepower, 5.2-liter V8 that roars to 8,250 rpm, it's really hard to consider the 2016 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R an underdog in any fight. However, the Shelby held the lowest as-tested price and was only middle of the pack in terms of power in Road & Track's 2016 Performance Car of the Year challenge. The 'Stang's numbers clearly didn't tell the whole story about the potent coupe because Ford's muscle car grabbed the title in this year's test. A model needs to be new or significantly updated to be eligible for the honor, and R&T found an impressive slate of eight candidates this year. The challengers included the Bentley Continental GT3-R, Cadillac ATS-V Coupe, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper ACR, Mercedes-AMG GT S, and Porsche Cayman GT4. The Ferrari 488 GTB was the most expensive of the bunch with an as-tested price of $347,942, which is five times more than the Shelby. Once the group was together, R&T hustled them over curving roads and on the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park. There was a lot to love about the Shelby, even in this impressive crew. "With a flat-plane crank and Sport Cup 2 tires, the GT350R is a Mustang turned up to 11," editor-in-chief Larry Webster said in the announcement of the results. The GT350R joins some great company. Past winners include the Porsche 911 GT3 last year and the Corvette in 2013. For some fantastic photography and the complete appraisal of these performance machines check out R&T's website for the full story.
