'84 Fleetwood Brougham, 107k miles. Runs & drives well. Recently serviced. Straight body, good paint, excellent roof, gently used leather interior. Some minor/normal wear & tear, but looks good overall. Definitely an attention-getter.

If you haven't driven an old C- or D-body full-size Cadillac, you've been missing out on a unique driving experience to which today's cars simply cannot compare. The driver's seats feel like you're sitting on your favorite sofa, only with a steering wheel in front of you. The auto-leveling air suspension allows these classic slabs of Detroit steel to float quietly and comfortably down the highway. The spacious back seat holds three adult passengers in comfort.

I acquired this car in Portland, Maine this past February while on a coast-to-coast road trip (thanks to some jerk who decided to smash into the car I had driven out there, leaving me without a vehicle 3000 miles from home). I drove the car from Maine to Flagstaff, AZ in February, and brought the car from Flagstaff to L.A. in April. It handled the long distances at high speeds with ease and I averaged about 20 mpg. The 4.1L V8 under the hood is certainly anemic by today's standards, but it does a decent enough job of getting all that metal moving and maintaining highway speeds. If I had enough room, I would happily hang onto it.

The car has a 5-digit odometer that reads a little over 7,000 miles. Based on the condition of the interior and what historical registration records I could find, I believe the odometer has only rolled over once and it has approximately 107,000 miles.

I'll try to summarize the vehicle's condition below. Keep in mind that this is a 30-year old car, and some normal wear and tear should be expected of any car its age.

INTERIOR:

- Leather seats are in overall excellent shape for their age. The leather itself is soft and does not show any signs of brittleness, cracking, fading, or sun damage. The front and rear seats all look barely used, with the exception of a couple scratches on the driver's seat (see photos).
- All carpeted areas are in good condition, and the headliner has no tears or stains.
- All buttons and dials work fine, including power locks, window switches, power seat levers, etc. The glove box knob has come off; I still have the knob and the glove box can still be opened with or without the knob.
- The dash is free of cracks, splits, and warping.
- There is some minor peeling of the wood grain on the driver's door and a couple other minor interior trim blemishes (see photos). Overall, the interior is in very good shape for its age.
- The trunk is in good condition.

EXTERIOR:

- Again, this is a New England car and, while it looks to have been taken care of overall, it has spent time on the roads in winter. As a result, there is some minor surface rust on non-visible areas of the body (such as the bottom interior of the doors) and beneath the frame. I haven't observed any areas of serious/significant rust anywhere, but keep in mind that I am not a mechanic.
- With that being said, the car looks overall pretty good for its age. There is no major fading on the paint (though there is a small patch of paint peeling on the filler panel on the front passenger side).
- Body is straight with no major dings, dents, or ripples. (There is a small ding on the hood and various minor scratches typical of any car.)
- All chrome is in excellent shape and does not show any rust.
- All body filler panels are intact and show no signs of brittleness or cracking.
- Vinyl padding on the roof is in excellent condition, with no cracks or splits.
- All light and reflector lenses are intact and free of cracks and discoloration.
- I replaced the tires in February 2014, approximately 2000 miles ago.
- I have removed the Cadillac emblem from one of the wire wheel covers. It was just loose enough that I did not want to risk it falling off.

MECHANICALS:

- Overall, the car starts, runs, drives, and shifts as it should. The ride-leveling air suspension is operable and has been free of problems.
- The electric radio antenna is functional but doesn't always fully extend.
- Windshield washer fluid pump seems to engage as it should, but no fluid actually discharges onto the windshield. I have not investigated this, but this is pretty common in older cars and is usually an easy fix.
- The A/C isn't blowing cold and will at minimum need a recharge.

The vehicle has received the following services in the past 3 months:
- New distributor cap/rotor, new ECM, new fuel pump, & new fuel injector. (Performed by Terry Marxen Cadillac in Flagstaf, AZ.)
- New EGR solenoid, new O2 sensor, new catalytic converter, and general tune-up. (Performed by E&E Automotive Service, a Cadillac specialist in Santa Monica, CA who has worked on all of my old Cadillacs.)
- New rear brakes.

This vehicle is located in Beverly Hills, CA 90212. I'm happy to accommodate in-person inspections/test drives prior to the auction end. If you plan on shipping the car, I'll gladly meet the shipper and help coordinate vehicle pickup, but the buyer will be responsible for arranging shipment.

Registered through April 2015, just smogged, and I have clear California title in hand.

I need the space more than I need this car. Come drive this classic Caddy home! Any questions, let me know (email is preferred over phone calls). Thanks!

GM extending warranties on Cadillac CTS-V and Chevy Camaro ZL1 for supercharger issue

Wed, 04 Jun 2014

Okay General Motors, we've sat by and watched you recall the compact cars, crossovers and pickup trucks, and aside from reporting on it, we've been fairly quiet. This, though, this will not do. We can almost tolerate the recalls on the bread-and-butter cars, but leave the performance vehicles alone.
According to a report from The Car Connection, GM has discovered a problem with the superchargers of the 6.2-liter V8s found in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the Cadillac CTS-V. Apparently, the issue rests around the internal bearing shaft grease, which can become contaminated (we aren't sure with what). If left unchecked, it'll first lead to a rattle at idle, which goes away under slight throttle. The real warning stage is when a high-pitched squeal develops, signaling that the bearing shaft has failed. Naturally, severe engine damage is the next step (although it's possible that the engine will also just refuse to turnover, although neither case is desirable).
According to TCC, GM will replace the superchargers on vehicles that have exhibited symptoms of bearing shaft failure free of charge. It will also, allegedly, be extending the warranty on all supercharged ZL1s and CTS-Vs to 10 years or 120,000 miles (whichever comes first), from the date of purchase. Officially, only 2009 to 2013 CTS-Vs and 2012 to 2013 ZL1s are suffering from this issue.

2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe

Thu, 30 Oct 2014

Cadillac has become a very, very different company since the dawn of the new millenium. Its turn-of-the-century lineup, consisting of staid offerings like the Seville, DeVille and Eldorado, represented the Old Cadillac. These cars were plagued with Old GM quality issues and catered to a more elderly audience. Since the company's Art and Science design language arrived, though, we've seen Cadillac flesh out its lineup in a big way, introducing notable and (so far) enduring products, like the the CTS, SRX and most recently, the ATS.
With the CTS tackling the 5 Series segment and the SRX duking it out with the Lexus RX and its classmates, the ATS has been left with the tough task of battling the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, among others. Critically, at least, it has excelled in this role, but it's still working on finding its feet sales-wise. On paper, broadening the model range by adding a two-door personal luxury coupe could help.
After a week with the ATS Coupe, though, we've found a car that, while retaining the standard model's excellent driving character, doesn't quite offer enough visual excitement to stand up to other cars in its segment.

Weekly Recap: Auto execs face life in prison for recall delays under proposed legislation

Sat, 09 Aug 2014

The stiff punishments are part of broader transportation legislation, but clearly McCaskill has automakers in her sights.
Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill threw down the gauntlet this week, proposing a bill that could send auto executives to prison for life if they were found to have delayed a recall. She also wants to eliminate the limit for fines for auto safety violations, which are currently capped at $35 million.
