1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible

Long and rightly advertised as the “Standard of the World,” GM’s Cadillac Division finally reached the summit of America’s fine car market during 1947, when it convincingly outsold its old archrival Packard by nearly 11,000 units. Without doubt, Cadillac’s postwar success was based on equal parts of advanced engineering, embodied by Cadillac’s groundbreaking overhead-valve V-8 engine, and the renowned stylistic genius of famed GM design Chief Harley Earl. Debuting for 1948 and inspired by Earl’s appreciation of the sleek and futuristic Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft of WW II fame, Cadillac’s signature tailfins debuted for 1948 and remained a design hallmark of GM’s luxury division for over 15 years.

Best-known for its sleek, cutting-edge styling based on Cadillac's El Dorado Golden Anniversary concept car that wowed the crowds at GM’s Motorama shows during 1952, the Series 62-based Eldorado Convertible reached series-production status in 1953. That year, the Eldorado quickly gained lasting fame for transporting U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower to his inauguration ceremonies. For 1956, the Seville two-door hardtop joined the Eldorado series, while the glamorous convertible was named the Biarritz, after the luxurious French seaside town on the Bay of Biscay. In 1957, the Brougham four-door hardtop appeared but then, as now, the Biarritz remained Cadillac’s undisputed image leader.

With its softer lines and lower overall stance, the redesigned 1957 Eldorado remains a collector favorite today, with its elegant proportions, downward-sloping rear deck, and restrained tailfins. A tuned 365 cubic-inch V-8 with a pair of Carter four-barrel carburetors delivered a stout 325-horsepower output, with GM’s famed Hydra-Matic four-speed automatic transmission standard. Just 1,800 examples of the Eldorado Biarritz were manufactured for 1957, priced from a commanding $7,286 to match its sheer presence. This highly attractive example is distinctively finished in “triple green” and continues to benefit very nicely from an older restoration. Equipped with most of the expected amenities for the Eldorado Biarritz, it will certainly provide an outstanding experience and draw admiration as the top GM model available for 1957 – in the most desirable open-air form to boot

GM design boss Welburn says Lincoln isn't a Cadillac rival [w/poll]

Thu, 05 Dec 2013

General Motors Vice President of Global Design, Ed Welburn, had some dismissive words for a certain cross-town luxury brand during an interview with Car and Driver. When asked about his thoughts on Lincoln, Welburn deflected, before saying, "I don't consider Lincoln to be a competitor for Cadillac."
"They're not a global luxury brand. I don't consider them a competitor. Are they a competitor for Buick? Quite possibly. But not for Cadillac," GM's head designer explained. Welburn, who's been at the helm of GM Design North America since 2003 and is the first to hold the position of VP of Global Design, has been instrumental in the styling renaissance at GM, so predictably, Car and Driver's interview with him focused on the design aspect of cars.
During the interview, Welburn explicitly denied plans for a reborn Cadillac XLR, even as a new Chevrolet Corvette is hitting the market and strides are being made with Cadillac's V-Series performance arm saying, "We have a lot of cars that we're working on for the Cadillac brand. The XLR is not one of them right now."

2014 Cadillac CTS starts $7k higher than last model at $46,025*

Thu, 13 Jun 2013

The redesigned 2014 Cadillac CTS will be more powerful, stylish and luxurious than its predecessor, but it will also be much more expensive. With a new starting price of $46,025 (*including $925 for destination), the 2014 CTS represents a price increase of more than $7,000 compared to the 2013 model, but it should be more appropriately sized and equipped to take on rivals like the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which start at $47,800 and $51,900, respectively.
Available trim levels - referred to as Collections - include Luxury, Performance and Premium, offering either a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder or a 3.6-liter V6 and the choice of either rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations. For more performance, the all-new CTS Vsport model will have an asking price of $59,995. This 420-horsepower model is more powerful than both the BMW 550i and Mercedes E550 and about $2,000 less expensive than both.
There's still no word on what Cadillac has in store for a next-gen CTS-V sedan, but we're guessing power and price will both rise considerably. Scroll down for more info on the 2014 CTS that is set to go on sale this fall.

Dodge Dart falls short of Consumer Reports Recommended, Caddy XTS and Lincoln MKS, too

Thu, 22 Nov 2012

The Dodge Dart, Cadillac XTS and Lincoln MKS all failed to earn a "Recommended" rating from Consumer Reports. When it came to the compact Dart, the organization's testers thought the vehicle offered a quiet cabin, solid-feeling chassis and nimble suspension, but the new model ultimately fell short of the coveted rating due to powertrain issues. The institute's reviewers found the base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to be underpowered and noted "drivability issues" when the available turbocharged 1.4-liter four was paired with the optional dual-clutch transmission (some of our editors disliked it paired with the six-speed manual). CR also dinged the latter powerplant for sounding "raspy." For what it's worth, we think the forced-induction engine offers an excellent and playful exhaust note, but that's just us.
As for the XTS, CR lauded the car for its luxurious cabin, but the vehicle's experience was dulled by its finicky CUE infotainment interface. Overall, the big Cadillac scored much higher than its cross-town rival from Lincoln. While testers found the American luxury sedan to offer a quiet ride and quality fit and finish, they felt the MKS delivered a "cramped driving position, ungainly handling, uncomposed ride, and limited visibility." Ouch. At the end of the day, both cars fell short of rivals from Japan, Germany and Korea. Check out the full press release below with more details, along with CR's musings on the Chevrolet Spark and Lexus ES.
