1966 Cadillac DeVille Convertible.

Actual former Las Vegas mafia car. Still has a cage in the trunk, see long description. Beautifully restored exterior and interior including rare factory bucket seats with console.
Trunk is painted with factory correct splatter paint. Blue top is in great condition.

Condition
This is a stunning car with no rust. It is Hampton Blue and we spared no expense on the bodywork and paint, over 10k alone.
All door, hood and trunk gaps are correct and even and all body panels fit perfectly.
The interior is the correct creamy white leather with perforated leather bucket seats.
All door panels have been replaced/restored to factory specs.
The carpet is new. Comes with lots of matching extra new carpet.
The dash has been recovered in a very subtle 2-tone blue vinyl.
The seats are the very rare and highly desirable factory bucket seats with the center console. I added a 4" pad on the console as an armrest, it can be removed, the factory console top is still there and in perfect condition.
The dash cluster has been rebuilt including speedometer and all gauges work as new. Rebuilt by Just Dashes.
In the glove box is the owners manual and a GM manual for the convertible top.
The two-tone steering wheel is from a 1965 Cadillac and looks much better than the stock 1966 wheel that had a big ugly vinyl pad in the center.
The top is dark blue and in perfect shape, new a few years ago and always covered.
Radio looks like the original but is modern with USB input.
Comes with blue rubber factory floor mats AND a brand new set of 4 matching carpet floor mats, never used.
The inside of the trunk is finished in the factory correct splatter paint (looks amazing) and has a 'Cadillac" rubber floor mat inside. (Amps and trunk speaker will be removed).
All chrome is new (one small spot on LH front bumper end cap needs a re-dip, very minor).
Transmission has been rebuilt and is perfect.
Front end has been rebuilt with all new bushings/rubber. Drives like, well, a Cadillac. Very smooth.
Tires are new. The only flaws are a small area on end piece of front bumper has a spot where the chrome came off and could use a fresh dip. This is only on the bumper endcap, not the main piece of the front bumper. Very minor. Also no A/C, needs compressor. Driver's side seatbelt housing has a crack as does a piece on console hinge. Very minor. 2 Hubcaps aren't perfect but are readily available if you think one needs replacing, Looked ok for me.
Black and gold 1966 California license plate with the correct letter series, meaning plates issued in 1966 started with a P, Q, R, or S. this plate is especially cool because the letters are "SWT" (sweet!) and the first two numbers (66) are the year of the car. Plates were restored and look pristine.
The brakes have been upgraded to factory Cadillac front disc brakes doing the desired 1969 Cadillac front disc brake installation.
New heavy duty alternator with custom pulley.
Extremely rare Eldorado trumpet horn. This is almost 3 feet long and was a rare option only availably on Eldorado's. Sounds awesome. I paid $600 for this used.
Windshield is new.

This thing turns heads wherever it goes.

History
This car was found abandoned in a Las Vegas luxury townhome parking garage. The building sold, and this car was the last one in the garage. Apparently it had been there for years, everyone thinking it belonged to someone in the building. When towed to the yard, the tow shop owner John Howell noticed that all 3 VIN numbers has been ground off. He called the Las Vegas police who then kept it for several months running it through crime photo databases searching for possible information on this car. Vegas police kept for 9 months investigating it, they were certain it was a mob car. They couldn't come up with anything concrete and should have crushed it, but apparently just didn't want to crush a classic. They gave it a Nevada state-issued VIN number, and riveted a vin plate in the drivers side door jam and gave it back to the towing company. I purchased the car from John Howell, the owner of the towing company.
When I got it, the carpet and seats were not even from a Cadillac as if something catastrophic had happened inside. The seats and carpet seemed to be from a full size chevy or something. The bench seats and door panels were crudely spray painted white to give the impression it had a white interior. Inside the trunk was 9 old pine tree air fresheners, a small wooden bat, and has welded bars, or a "cage" in the trunk to keep someone inside the trunk from kicking their way out through the back seat. Under the dash is a red light to be able to see while keeping human vision in 'night mode' and to not dilate the eyes. (Good for late-night trips out in the desert with no headlights.) That light is still there as is the cage in the trunk. See trunk photo: Amps are mounted on a blue panel and them mounted on the cage, look for 4 vertical bars and 2 horizontal bars. Amps and blue panel will be removed for the sale, the cage will remain. Cage bars were raw metal but I had it painted body color when the car was painted.
This is the real deal.

I have since replaced the incorrect interior with rare factory power bucket seats with center console done in the correct creamy white. The car is beautifully painted sparing no expense, replacing metal wherever there was rust. I have not touched the engine, mileage is unknown. It runs fine, and the engine is a 429ci from a1965 Cadillac Eldorado (same as '66).

The car was just featured in a video by the multi-platinum band Toad the Wet Sprocket. I worked for the Santa Barbara band for many years and was flattered when they asked to use the car in a video for their new single California Wasted. The video can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nDZp3-h-7o

(Oddly enough, on The Soprano's season 1, episode 7, Tony Soprano has a flashback to his youth and the first time he realized his father was in the mob. He sees his dad "Johnny Boy" Soprano driving a car identical to this. His dad sees someone that owes him money and slams on the brakes, gets out and chases the guy down. I always liked that this car is what "Johnny Boy" Soprano drove.)

I have a super-low reserve on this car, it is priced to sell. Don't miss your chance to own a one-of-a-kind car like this.
This car can be seen/inspected in Santa Barbara, California. Call Joe at 805.252.4334, leave a message and I will get right back to you. Thanks for looking.

J.D. Power study sees new car dependability problems increase for first time since 1998

Wed, 12 Feb 2014

For the first time since 1998, J.D. Power and Associates says its data shows that the average number of problems per 100 cars has increased. The finding is the result of the firm's much-touted annual Vehicle Dependability Study, which charts incidents of problems in new vehicle purchases over three years from 41,000 respondents.
Looking at first-owner cars from the 2011 model year, the study found an average of 133 problems per 100 cars (PP100, for short), up 6 percent from 126 PP100 in last year's study, which covered 2010 model-year vehicles. Disturbingly, the bulk of the increase is being attributed to engine and transmission problems, with a 6 PP100 boost.
Interestingly, JDP notes that "the decline in quality is particularly acute for vehicles with four-cylinder engines, where problem levels increase by nearly 10 PP100." Its findings also noticed that large diesel engines also tended to be more problematic than most five- and six-cylinder engines.

Cadillac confirms 420-hp twin-turbo V6 for 2014 CTS [w/videos]

Mon, 18 Mar 2013

The 2014 CTS will break cover next week at the New York Auto Show, but Cadillac has released a few details of what we can expect to find under the car's hood. As we saw in some spy shots back in January, the biggest news for the midsize Caddy will be a twin-turbocharged V6 producing a whopping 420 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.
This LF3 engine will be paired to a new eight-speed automatic transmission, which will help balance performance and fuel economy. We still don't know how much the 2014 CTS has grown in terms of size and weight, but General Motors says that new sedan will return 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg highway with the new engine to go with a 0-60 mile per hour time of 4.6 seconds - that means the new CTS will have the fuel economy close to the current base model sedan and acceleration not too far from the current CTS-V. General Motors also confirmed that this twin-turbo V6 will be available in the 2014 XTS this fall.
The next-generation CTS will carry over the 3.6-liter V6 from the current car (likely as a base engine) and also add the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder from the ATS. Check out all the details on this new engine and watch a few videos (including GM's nifty tilt rig) by scrolling below.

These are the top luxury cars bought by people entering the segment for the first time

Fri, 25 Jul 2014

Let's say you just got a big promotion at work or the kids are moving out of the house, and you finally have some extra money. You decide to blow it all at once and treat yourself by upgrading your ride. Naturally, you look to a luxury automaker. What do you choose?
Models like the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class may be tailor-made to introduce buyers to the premium segment, but a new study finds that they don't garner the highest rates of non-luxury customer conquests. It turns out that a Volvo leads among folks moving up to a premium brand, and it isn't even one that's made anymore, at that.
A recent study by Polk and IHS Automotive looked at what models had the highest rates of buyers upgrading from a non-luxury segment. The information comes from its new vehicle registration data through April 2014. All ten top models boasted conquest rates of over 50 percent, but the Volvo C70 led the field with 68.01 percent of its customers coming from non-premium brands.
