I dreamed for years about owning my own Beast - E39 M5.  I finally purchased this vehicle and lived the dream for two months as I commuted 15 miles round trip to work.  Beginning in June, I started a new assignment with a 100 miles round trip journey.  In fear of putting miles on the car and it depreciating rapidly, I bought a commuter and parked it in the garage for sunny days (rare in Washington State).  However, as you can imagine it is a tease and cash tied-up when you cannot use a vehicle like this daily.  So here it is on the open market for you to enjoy.

This Silver M5, with black leather interior, Alcantara headliner, and wood trim has only 59,400 miles.  I purchased this car from its original owner (former politician in Seattle) who leased and then purchased it which demonstrates why the carfax suggests that I am the 3rd owner.  When I purchased it, I had very little maintenance records from the prior owner so I immediately had a comprehensive maintenance completed.  This maintenance consisted of seal replacements and flushes.  Additionally, I had a new clutch installed as it was slipping.  So, nearly $5k in costs later, you can see why I didn't fix the gas pressure issue and power mirror.  Now, that said, I did "have" to spend $3k on exhaust, H&R springs (installed with an alignment and warranty), mint Michelin tires, and good condition E39 M5 wheels because for some reason the prior owner replaced the original wheels with aftermarket wheels and never put an exhaust on it!  My price also includes a spare set of mint tires (Toyos) with the purchase.

As a bonus, this car comes with a superb stereo system with rear-deck mounted sub-woofers with a tape deck and 6-disc cd changer, short throw, upgraded pedals, bmw rubber floor mats, M5 carpet floor mats, and a mounted radar detector (sensors installed on front and rear bumpers with the head unit installed in front of the gear shift).

I am not desperate to sell my Beast but like I said, it is a tease and it is tied up cash.  I hope to sell it to a proud owner who understands and appreciates the thrill of owning the greatest production sedan ever made.

Six 'shut up and take my money' cars

Tue, 11 Nov 2014

Any time you see this iconic moment in pop culture - Shut up and take my money! - posted in response to a new car reveal, rumor for an upcoming model or even lip-service to a vehicle that should exist, you can bet there's some intrinsic good in the idea. Though depending on the person offering up the cash, that good could take the form of extraordinary form, functionality, weight savings, power, handling, etc. You get the idea.
In fact, when I first proposed this list, I reached out to the Autoblog staff to help me brainstorm. Here are some of the ideas they offered up that I ultimately didn't use: Jaguar XE Coupe, Pagani Huayra Roadster, Mercedes-Benz S-Class "parade car" (cabriolet), Morgan 3-Wheeler with Ducati V-twin, Ford Transit Connectamino (pickup), Mercedes CLA63 AMG, Ford Fusion 5.0, BMW i8 Spyder, Lexus RC-F Shooting Brake, Volvo XC90 Polestar. Oh, and things we collectively wanted to stick Dodge's Hellcat in were almost as numerous as models that Fiat Chrysler Automotive currently makes (though none quite so compelling as the Grand Cherokee you see above.)
Ultimately though, while I used a couple of ideas from my colleagues, the list of cars I'd shell out for unquestionably is very personal. Though it isn't complete, what follows is a selection of cars whose very existence would prompt me - or the trust-fund-baby versions of me - to utter without hesitation: "Shut up and take my money."

BMW 4 Series Convertible basks in the sun

Wed, 07 Aug 2013

The BMW 4 Series Convertible will show its non-camouflaged face sometime later this year, but our spies recently caught this nearly naked prototype out getting some sun. As you'll recall, the droptop 4 Series replaces the 3 Series Convertible in the BMW range, and if our recent stint behind the wheel of the new 435i Coupe is anything to go on, this topless 4er should be quite a fun runabout for sun-drenched motoring.
To no one's surprise, the 4 Series Convertible shares all of its design with the 4 Series coupe, save, of course, the obvious roofectomy. Beyond that, the topless 2+2 will use the same engines and transmissions as the coupe, meaning it should arrive in the US in both 428i and 435i guises, powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, respectively. Both six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions will be available.
The car spied this time around has the full M Sport visual treatment, with the revised (and better-looking) front fascia, larger 19-inch wheels, and attractive Melbourne Red paint. Interestingly, it appears this prototype has the standard xenon headlamp setup, rather than the full-LED option that's also available.

Mini JCW Paceman vs. BMW M135i in family faceoff

Mon, 15 Apr 2013

Over the last year, we've had the chance to drive two of the most exciting hatchbacks in the BMW family - the BMW M135i and the Mini Paceman John Cooper Works - but Autocar has managed to get the two corporate cousins together for a head-to-head comparison. Just like our initial impressions of the Paceman JCW, Autocar has little to complain about this new 215-horsepower hatchback... until it begins to factor in the faster, better-mannered and similarly priced M135i.
Despite laying down an extra 100 hp and delivering a 0-60 time that is almost two seconds quicker, the M135i carries the same price tag of 29,535 pounds in the UK; US pricing for the Paceman starts at $36,200, while it still isn't even clear if the US will be getting the M135i. Even more surprising is the fact that the Paceman falls short of the M135i in regards to rear seat and cargo volume, and just barely squeaks out a win in the fuel economy department. Scroll down to watch the BMW versus Mini hot hatch battle.
