Ward's Automotive Ten Best Engines of 2014 dominated by diesels, turbos

With the Car and Driver Ten Best decided, the North American Car and Truck of the Year finalists announced and Cadillac, Ram and Subaru chalking up wins with Motor Trend, it's fair to say that the automotive awards season is in full swing. The next set of trophies to be handed out will be from Ward's Automotive, which has announced the winners of its 2014 10 Best Engines.
The latest contest was marked by the widespread emergence of diesel power and the continued success of turbocharged engines. There was even an electric motor on this year's list. In fact, only three of the ten winners were naturally aspirated and only two winners returned from last year.
"We weren't looking to throw the bums out, as they might say about an election. We were just really impressed with the flood of new powertrains," said Ward's Automotive Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter. Those new powertrains include the 83-kilowatt electric motor from the Fiat 500e, the 1.0-liter, EcoBoost three-cylinder from the Ford Fiesta and the 2.0-liter turbodiesel from the Chevrolet Cruze.

So we guessed wrong. When the 2017 BMW "30 Jahre M3" Limited Edition comes here it won't get English-translated badging – you're just going to have to be clever enough to know it means "30 Years of M3." Maybe that adds to the appeal. The good news is that 150 of the 500 cars to be built will come to the United States. US-spec cars will be pretty much as loaded as an M3 gets. That means everything we detailed in our initial report, including the Competition Package and all of the special touches, like that sweet Macao Blue throwback paint. BMW is also including the other three packages available on an M3: the Driver Assistance Plus Package (safety stuff like Active Blind Spot Detection, Active Driving Assistance, and side- and top-view cameras), the Executive Package (the head-up display, a heated steering wheel, a rearview camera, heated rear seats, parking sensors, and wireless device charging), and the LIghting Package (full-LED headlights, auto high-beams). The cars will run $84,245 for a manual transmission or $87,145 for one with the dual-clutch, which amounts to just a little more than a maxed-out run-of-the-mill M3 sedan. BMW announces M235i xDrive, 7 Series Exclusive among summer upgrades

Like any automaker worth its lug-nuts, BMW is constantly striving to improve its products. And so it has announced a series of upgrades for the summer - none of them revolutionary, but a couple of them notable.
For one, the Bavarian automaker has announced that is is offering xDrive traction on the M235i coupe, a model that has been available until now only in rear-drive configuration. The all-wheel drive version comes with the same 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six with 326 horsepower (320 in the US market) and eight-speed automatic transmission as the rear-drive version, but now channels that power to all four wheels for a 0-62 time quoted at 4.6 seconds - two little ticks quicker than the existing version. It's the first time that all-wheel drive is being offered on the 2 Series, and will also be fitted on the convertible - at least, that is, in Europe. We're waiting on confirmation of North American availability.
Among the other announcements is a special edition of BMW's flagship luxury sedan. The 7 Series Exclusive Edition upgrades with metallic paint, 19-inch V-spoke alloys, Nappa leather upholstery and a leather-trimmed instrument panel. Buyers will also be able to opt for the Merino fine grain leather and Alcantara roof lining from the BMW Individual catalog, and choose between any available engine or either wheelbase lengths.
