THE OVERVIEW

Offered for a highly appreciating new owner is VERY SPECIAL ONE-OF-A KIND CUSTOM 1989 BMW M3 CABRIOLET! This spectacular E30-chassis M3 convertible began its life as a more pedestrian M20 powered 325ic when it began its transformation in the summer of 2008. Meticulous? Fussy? I think "obsessive-compulsive" is the more accurate term to convey the blood sweat and tears that I have poured into the creation of this exquisite classic driving machine! While it would be too painful to calculate every dollar spent in the process of this creation, it is safe to say that I have over $50,000 invested to date!  No expense was spared in making this car correct in every way! The working six-digit odometer currently shows just over 95,000 miles. The vin of this 1989 BMW i
s: WBABB1306K8275006 which will be sold with clean and clear California title and is 100% California smog legal (certified by the state referee after engine swap) here in this state of ultra stringent smog requirements.

THE POWERPLANT AND MECHANICALS

As I hope is so far conveyed in the words here, this car was created to be the very best of the best! At
the heart of this automible resides a 75,000 miles S50 OBD1 3.0 liter inline six cyliner E36 M3 Motorsport engine mated to an E36 M3 5 speed manual transmission delivering power to the rear wheels via a 2.93 limited slip rear differential. Power is put to the pavement via Khumo Ecsta Sport tires size 225/35/18" front and 245/35/18" rears mounted on five lug 18" ESM/BBS staggered wheels with color-matched centers and BBS caps and emblems. It also sports black manual convertible top, New E34 M5 clutch, Dinan lightweight flywheel, custom 3.5 euro AFM, M5 motor mounts, X-brace chassis brace, Racing Dynamic struct tower brace, cross-drilled Zimmerman rotors with stainless steel lines, M coupe finned-differential, Ground Control custom suspension featuring Koni shocks, 450 pound front and 900 pound rear springs, H&R sway bars, E30 M3 control arm bushings, PBR metallic brake pads [very low dust], Rogue Engineering exhaust, OEM E36 M3 catalytic converter and a few other details I do not recall. Overall this car is close to 100% perfect mechanically!!!!!

THE BODY AND TRIM

Finished in absolutely pristine gleaming Alpine white over charcoal black leather, this specimen began its transformation as a super clean 1989 325ic cabriolet free of any corrosion, bondo or paintwork from any accidents. Purchase price of this ideal donor alone was $5,500! Upon acquisition the car went directly to the BMW dealership certified auto body shop to be pulled apart awaiting installation of all new original E30 M3 cabriolet factory parts ordered from Europe, which are no longer available. And when I say all new original E30 M3 cabrio factory parts, I mean brand new bumpers (worth over $1400 each), new doors, new fenders, new trunk lid as well as new OEM steel quarter panels.
The headlights are genuine Hella smoked smily European with xenon 6k lighting system.

I went to this extent to avoid ANY and all bondo work, otherwise my car would have been just about the same as ANY other E30 M3 Cabrio conversion done here in the US with bondo-ed bumpers (to eliminate the side markers), fiberglass or steel quarter panels(cut from US E30 M3 coupe) or bond-ed doors and trunk ( to eliminate the molding mounting holes of the doors and the 3rd brake on the trunk). NOTE: Only the hood was retained from the original car.
All of the work was done by the BMW certified body man and inspected/certified by factory representative before release of the vehicle [You will see details in the link to build thread below].

The current exterior condition of my vehicle is virtually perfect with only two or three very small paint chips and couple of very slight blemishes like some minor scuffing under the front spoiler and yellowing on the zippered OEM BMW plastic window.

THE INTERIOR

The interior of my vehicle is in exquisite, near flawless, need I say "BETTER-THAN-NEW" condition overall. It sports completely redone leather interior, includes the seats (with new heated seats elements) with multi-colored M stripe detail,  doors panels and center consoles, E30 M3 "EVO" steering wheel, custom made aluminum M pedals (paid $400 new), German gauges, oem leather E30 M3 handbrake [$350 alone for this item only!].  Also enhancing the cabin is a Clarion buttonless, touch sensitive bluetooth head unit with remote control and Alpine component speakers, amplifier and double 8" JL Audio subwoofers.

THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE

This is one fast, tight and special driving machine!  The acceleration is superb from the smooth and free-revving S50 six cylinder engine with mellifluous ehaust note, the handling is sublime rivaling anything from BMW's selection of 2013 offerings, the suspension is a perfect balanced being both firm and supple, the braking is strong and straight with excellent pedal feel. Overall this is one VERY fun and satisfying BMW to motor topless on the open road adding an exclamation point to the phrase "ultimate driving machine!

Road & Track names its 2013 Performance Car of the Year

Thu, 14 Nov 2013

Road & Track recently staged its first annual Performance Car of the Year test, pitting 13 new and updated performance cars against each other on track, then graduating the top six to a road test before picking a winner. Additionally, the magazine staff picked the best automobiles of the year in eight categories.
But first, let's cover the PCotY segment. Here's the list of cars brought to the comparison test: Audi R8 V10 Plus; BMW 435i; BMW M6 Competition Package; Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z51; Ferrari F12 Berlinetta; Ford Fiesta ST; Jaguar F-Type V8 S; Jaguar XFR-S; Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S-Model Wagon; Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series; Mini John Cooper Works GP; Nissan GT-R Track Edition; and Porsche Cayman S.
To find out the results of the comparison, head over to Road & Track's website or check the press release below, where you'll also find the magazine's top-rated vehicles in eight categories. Want more? Head over to the 2013 PCotY hub. But before you do that, take a stab at guessing the winner of PCotY (we'll give you one hint: it isn't a Porsche).

Why BMW doesn't plan to integrate Apple's iOS in the Car

Wed, 12 Jun 2013

While watching Apple introduce iOS in the Car during its WWDC keynote on Monday, we wondered how automakers, even the 14 who've already signed up to integrate this new in-car functionality of iOS 7, will feel about having the Cupertino company's mobile operating system supplant their own in-car systems. After all, some OEMs like Ford, General Motors and many luxury automakers have sunk millions of dollars into developing their own advanced infotainment, navigation and communication platforms like MyFord Touch, CUE and older systems like iDrive.
One automaker has now spoken up. A BMW spokeperson was interviewed by someone in the news department of British auto dealer group Arnold Clark and confirmed that the company would not be getting in line to integrate iOS in the Car anytime soon. The reason, as we suspected, is that BMW believes its own products developed over the last decade are both plenty good and already so deeply integrated with other systems of the car that, as told to Arnold Clark, "it would not be that straightforward to start changing all of the architecture of a car as has been implied [by Apple]."
While BMW isn't interested in spending more money to integrate Apple's services and functionality over its own, it has spent a good bit already to integrate iPhone functionality in its cars, including the relatively rare ability to support iPod Out and display Apple's own interface on Mini models with the optional Mini Connected feature, as well as committing to integrate Siri 'Eyes Free' functionality.

Alpina D3 may be coming to Frankfurt with 350 hp, AWD

Wed, 14 Aug 2013

Rumors are swirling that Alpina, the tuning house that specializes in all things BMW, will followup its Geneva debut of the B3 Bi-Turbo with an oil-burning variant slated for debut at September's Frankfurt Motor Show. The news comes from Auto Zeitung, which reports that the second-generation D3 will be based off the Europe-only 335d.
This is a departure from the last D3, which had the four-cylinder turbo-diesel from the BMW 123d in a 3 Series body. The new model is expected to use a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged inline-six, which will generate 350 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. That should scoot it to 62 miles per hour in under five seconds (likely while towing a tree stump). Both rear- and all-wheel drive should be available on the D3, and we imagine the thrill of this much power channeled through just the two rear wheels to be akin to skydiving sans parachute.
For our European friends that want an Alpina D3, but don't need more torque than any American full-size pickup, there may be plans to offer a four-cylinder variant that still delivers Alpina performance without a compromise in economy. We'll have more on the Alpina D3 when it debuts at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
