1972 BMW 2002 Baur Targa,-- Rare European Model. VIN# 2795512 matching/engine/ chassis . Number 512 of 1963 Baur Targa Cabriolets produced by Baur. Manufactured on June 13th 1972 and was delivered to Italy. http://classicandvintagebmw.tumblr.com/02targa (check this site for more info on Baur Targa) Car was imported into the USA in April of 2007. Mileage at the date of sale was 92,250. Prior to purchase, the engine ,suspension and brakes were rebuilt by Jaymic in England. I have many of the old receipts (new clutch, brake calipers, etc.) from Jaymic as well the original owner’s manuals, etc. These repairs were made at round the 85k mileage mark and are documented in repair log. The interior was professionally re-done and a new German square weave carpet kit was installed by the new owner in Los Gatos,CA. During the installation of the carpet , he located a 1962 Italian Lira(coin) under the old carpet kit. That helped to confirm that the car spent its early days in Italy. The coin has been drilled and is attached to the vintage BMW leather key chain along with the original keys and aftermarket gas cap key. The car was re-painted some time in England by the previous owner, the paint still looks good. Only on the hood I can see small bubble paint. The car has some small micro scratches. A new Apline CDA-9883 in-dash w/removable face CD/MP3 receiver(xm/Sirius satellite ready) with iPod connection along with Alpine under dash speakers were installed in September 2007. Door panels and rear passenger panels were not cut. Routine lube, oil & filer changes have been made every 3k miles. Weber carburetor (replaced the Solex) and Pertonix electronic ignition were installed in 08/2010 mileage 98,075. Current mileage is 99,923. Tires are 80% good. Car has a Nardi steering wheel and Cosmic wheels. Dome light too. All lights, turn signals, brake lights, fog lights and rear bumper mounted brake light work. Windshield and all windows are clean/clear and Sonneland rear window on the convertible Targa top is clean/clear as well. I also have an extra windshield that has been wrapped in bubble wrap. Most recent service by Import Doctors in Seattle- 01/2013. Lube, synthetic oil & filter, new water pump and coolant. Mileage at service-99,463. You are welcome to do pre-purchase inspection before the auction ends. I had described the car in best of my knowledge, please ask any questions. I trust this car to go cross-country but the car is sold “AS IS” without any warranty. This vehicle will only go up in value. This is the only one the I come across. |

Some younger drivers relish the idea of stick shifting
Sat, Mar 4 2023Part way into the 21st Century, obsolescence isn’t what it used to be, especially in the minds of younger consumers; consider the renaissance of vinyl records and film cameras. To that list, add the automobileÂ’s stick shift. Manual transmissions are no longer just about lower car purchase prices, better fuel economy or more control on the road. TheyÂ’re about being hip. At least, thatÂ’s part of the thesis offered in a recent article in The Wall Street Journal. “The 20-Somethings Fueling a Stick-Shift Renaissance”  examines a modest but real resurgence in the sales upticks of manual-equipped cars, and focuses on the enthusiasm of younger people to acquire them, and the challenges—no longer so challenging—of learning bow to drive them. But, as readers of Autoblog have learned in recent years,, the future of manuals, as author Rachel Wolfe succinctly points out in the Journal piece, is essentially doomed in the longer term. Blame the electric vehicle. She writes that car makers sold 43 different manual models in 2022, according to J.D. Power, compared with 69 in 2019. “While a few EVs do have more than one gear,” she says, “auto makers are still figuring out how to translate the experience of maneuvering a manual to their electric car lineups. ‘’ Did we mention “doomed”? But Ms. Wolfe does offer some positivity. “MINI just opened a manual driving school of its own at the BMW Performance Center in Thermal, Calif.,” she writes. “A January company survey of just over 1,000 drivers found that two-thirds of 18-to-34-year-olds are eager to learn how to drive a manual, versus 40% of older respondents who donÂ’t already drive stick.” The author quotes a couple of drivers who became enamored of manuals, including a teenager from Ohio who took his driving test with a manual. “I thought it was cool to learn how to drive on a stick, just because I could tell my friends that I was a better driver than them,” he says. She also visits the other side of the issue, talking to a 24-year-old, who said that she found the stick “cool,” but only until “her leg grew sore from the clutch as she navigated traffic commuting back and forth from law school every day in Tampa, Fla.  ‘I think they are very fun to drive for about two hours, and then youÂ’re like, OK, I would like to put it away and just drive like a normal person again.’’” The full article is available online here.
Rinspeed issues its Budii call for Geneva [w/video]
Tue, Feb 17 2015Of all the concepts prepared every year for the Geneva Motor Show, those made by Rinspeed are typically the most outlandish and forward-thinking. And this is the latest from Frank Rinderknecht and company. Though Rinspeed's been known to build entirely original vehicles from the ground up, it tends to base its creations on production models: Following the Tesla-based XchangE from last year, the Smart-based Dock+Go of 2012, the Fiat-based E2 from 2009 and the Lotus-based sQuba in 2007, the new Budii concept is based on the BMW i3. That means, of course, that it's powered by electricity, but the technology demonstrator is focused more on autonomous driving tech. The Budii incorporates a periscopic camera and laser scanner to map the terrain and the road ahead from above, and a drive-by-wire steering system that allows the steering wheel on an articulated column to be passed between driver and passenger or tucked out of the way to let the electronics take over. Once unburdened of the task of driving, the occupants can enjoy the proliferation of touchscreens, the "wellness shower" (whatever that is) installed in the headliner, the automatic watch-winder on the steering column and the interior accoutrements furnished by Mansory. The whole thing rides on a lowered suspension with 19-inch Borbet alloys, with a rainbow Knight Rider-style grille in the nose. But to appreciate the full scope of the consortium of suppliers that collaborated with Rinspeed to bring the Budii to life, you'll want to delve into the press release after the video below and scope out the dozens of high-resolution images in the slideshow above. 2015 Geneva Motor Show: Rinspeed "Budii" redefines human-machine interaction Reach out to robots The vision of autonomous driving will soon become reality and will fundamentally change the interaction of man and automobiles. While the research centers of the automotive industry are still feverishly working on the technical solutions, progressive thinkers such as the Swiss idea factory Rinspeed are already giving concrete thought to how automated private transport will transform the car and the man-machine system. Besides fundamental conceptual changes, this will also have to involve issues of ethics and society. In the past, the robots in the factories of this world merely assembled cars for people. Wagons make a bit of a comeback, with new models, sales on the rise
Thu, Jan 10 2019Consider this an official invitation to hop on the wagon bandwagon. There's still tons of room because, well, it's a wagon (and market share is still extremely small). But according to new data, the segment is growing. According to a report from Bloomberg, using data from Edmunds.com, roughly 211,600 Americans purchased wagons in 2018. That is technically down from the 237,600 sold in 2017, but wagon sales in the U.S. are up 29 percent from where they were five years ago. It's also the third year in a row that wagon sales broke the 200,000 mark. The sales trends have been somewhat representative of the availability of wagons. New models have debuted during the past 5 years and therefore offer more opportunity at more brands to buy wagons. In addition to more modest cars such as the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen, several luxury and performance brands are offering wagons today, such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Jaguar, Volvo and Buick. (Bloomberg's headlines make the point that "crossovers are for the Kardashians," and wagons are just, well, classier.) This uptick in brand-name availability, as well as extremely well-executed design on most of the wagons currently available, has helped increase the segment's desirability. That, and its ability to better accomplish the same tasks at hand while standing out from the crossover and SUV crowd. Still, the posted numbers represent a small fraction of the total vehicles sold. According to the data, wagons only held a 1.4 percent market share in 2017, the segment's best recent year. Wagons hold a steadfast place in America's past, and they're writing an interesting new story. With the downturn in traditional cars, they may continue to create an unexpected narrative.
