1971 Bmw 1600-2 Cabriolet Convertible on 2040-cars
Stevens Point, Wisconsin, United States

You are bidding on a numbers matching 1971 BMW 1600-2 Cabriolet Convertible that has been professionally and completely rebuilt from the ground up over three years and finished in 2004 including the original engine rebuild. This is one of 1,682 Baur 1600-2 convertibles built between 1967 and 1971. This vehicle was purchased in Saarbrucken, Germany in 1971 after being manufactured in December 1970. It was then shipped to Switzerland where it stayed for the next 28 years. I don't know how few would be left world wide, but this was the very last one of 454 built in 1970, and I would put this next to any still in existence in regards to overall condition, build, and performance. I might still have some of the build out photo files, if the winner wants them. I can also detail the prominent shops that have worked on this BMW to the winner if there are any future questions about build, heritage or just general questions. I have spoken with many of them and they all remember this little gem very well. The exterior paint is beautiful with a nice deep shine in Alpine White. The interior is the black original style vinyl with the correct front and rear seats without any defects in the upholstery. There is a wooden Nardi steering wheel which is gorgeous, and a matching wooden stick shift. These are not original, but really look great on the car. There is updated German carpet installed on the floor. The speedometer was converted to a period correct US specs speedo with MPH instead of KPH during the rebuild and shows the mileage since the rebuild. All the gauges and switches work including the period correct style radio. The heater blows nice and warm if you have the top down on an evening ride. There is a small crack in the dash that was repaired prior to my owning the car, but seems to have opened up a bit during indoor winter storage. The top is also in great condition, including the rear window. The original components were used and a new BMW top was placed on the mechanicals. One person can easily open or close the top. The convertible tonneau cover is complete and also has no holes or tears and seals the top up nice and tidy. The front window has some superficial scratches that do not affect anything, but if you are looking for concourse correct, this could be changed out I imagine. On the rare occasion the top has been up, mostly to wash and wax, it fits snugly and does not leak. The engine is beautiful and does not leak any fluids. It was a complete rebuild in 2004 and the only modifications are the Weber 2 barrel carburetor with K&N air filter and a Tii mechanical distributor. It starts up instantly every time and when the car is running, you can barely hear it at idle. It runs very nicely at speed, and I think many BMW enthusiasts are surprised at how well the 1600 scoots down the road, even compared to its big brother the 2002. The transmission and differential are original and were rebuilt and sealed in 2004. The original style steel wheels and hubcaps are all in great condition as well as the tires with little to no wear. It is probably due for an alignment, but there is no wear on the tires. The emergency brake works well, but also could use a little adjusting as it grabs a bit harder on the passenger side than drivers, however, the car stops easily and the brakes and suspension are in great shape. There have been some rare examples of these models at recent auctions and I would put this car next to any of those I have seen. We have owned this car over 6 years and realize we will not find another out there like it, but if you are looking for a really nice example of fairly rare and really fun early BMW sports car this could be your car. Shipping/Handling/Taxes are the winner's responsibility, but I will assist the winner and their agents to make the transfer simple. I encourage a personal/professional inspection which is also at the bidder's expense, but again I am willing to help out and make it easy for serious, legitimate bidders. The car is offered As Is and Where Is. A $2000 PayPal deposit is expected within 48 hours of the winning bid or buy it now. The car and title will not be released until all funds have cleared my bank via Bank Wire or Cashier's Check. I am happy to answer any pertinent questions to aid in the bidding/buying process, so please BID legitimately with confidence, and good luck. If you must have this vehicle, I encourage you to use the Buy It Now feature as recent examples have shown the interest level to be very high on these cars. |

2014 BMW 4 Series drops its top, priced from $48,750*
Sat, 12 Oct 2013BMW will debut its new 2014 4 Series Convertible at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, and after seeing plenty of spy shots and, most recently, some leaked images, we now have all the official details. To no one's surprise, the 4 Series convertible is, essentially, a topless version of BMW's new-for-2014 4 Series coupe, and will be offered in the United States in the same 428i and 435i guises.
On the base end, that means the 428i Convertible arrives with the company's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, good for 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, and available with either rear- or all-wheel drive. BMW says the 428i will sprint to 60 miles per hour in a respectable 6.2 seconds. For folks in need of more thrust, BMW will happily sell you a 435i Convertible, available only with rear-wheel drive, powered by a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged inline-six that produces 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of twist. Hitting 60 mph in the 435i will take roughly five and a half seconds with the standard eight-speed auto. Curiously, BMW did not mention anything about a six-speed manual transmission for either model, so looks like this droptop might be an auto-only affair. We've contacted BMW for confirmation, so we'll keep you posted.
Like the 3 Series Convertible it replaces, the 4 Series uses a three-piece folding hardtop configuration, and BMW says that added sound deadening reduces audible wind noise by about two decibels. Folding the automatic roof takes just 20 seconds, and can be done at speeds up to roughly 11 mph. For chilly, top-down driving (something we're big fans of), there are now three-temperature neck warmers for the front seats - just like what Mercedes-Benz offers with its AirScarf system.
Ex-Rolls-Royce design chief Ian Cameron killed at home
Tue, Jul 16 2024Former Rolls-Royce design chief Ian Cameron, the man who oversaw the automaker's design renaissance with the Phantom and Ghost ranges, was stabbed to death at his home in Bavaria (translated) on July 12. German newspaper reports have identified a suspect via surveillance camera (translated) whom police say is the killer. Apparently, the man went shopping at a store less than a mile from Cameron's house, then changed clothes and showed up at Cameron's door. A surveillance image before the suspect gets to the house shows him wearing the items that neighbors described, notably light pants, a dark blue hoodie, a red backpack and "yellow-green gloves." Someone reportedly cut the wires on the home security system, the suggestion being that the suspect or someone else involved had cased the house for at least a few days. It's said the killer rang the doorbell, attacking as soon as Cameron opened the front door, stabbing the designer to death. Verena Kloos, Cameron's wife, escaped to a neighbor's house and called police. This is a bizarre incident. Reports have floated the motivation that the killer wanted one of the vehicles in Cameron's car collection at the Bavarian property. Instead of going after a car, though, the killer ran off in his distinctive outfit, staying in the open long enough for neighbors to give a detailed description. He then changed clothes and ditched the backpack on a lakeside promenade not far from Cameron's house. Strangest of all, the man apparently left the clothes near the backpack, and the backpack contained items the man had bought during his shopping trip before the murder. At the time of writing, police are searching throughout Germany but haven't caught the suspect. With a clear picture and a likely trove of DNA evidence, authorities have excellent leads. Anyone who can help is asked to get in touch with the Furstenfeldbruck Criminal Investigation Department at (+49) 8.14.16.120. Cameron's career started at Pininfarina in 1975, culminating in a greatest hits of designs while at BMW. He has exterior design of the third-generation Range Rover on his resume, as well as the BMW Z8. It was Cameron's Phantom, though, that helped create an entirely new Rolls-Royce after BMW bought the brand. CEO Chris Brownridge wrote on LinkedIn that "Ian played a significant role in shaping Rolls-Royce from when it was first acquired by BMW Group and moved to its home at Goodwood, West Sussex.
