We purchased this classic low mileage Volvo after it was donated to charity. It ran great when we got it. But unfortunately for us the car was all original - as in it had not been driven enough to be current on service. Our preparation for sale therefore included a battery, oil change, timing belt service, front brake pads & rotors, fuel pump, air filter, flame trap, a lower ball joint, exhaust pipe, a/c blower motor, tires and state inspection - basically all the things that either go wrong or normally need to be done, but all at once. Now this 240 runs and drives great - plenty of power (for a 240) smooth and all operational. This is a solid, rust free, fully serviced, low mileage vehicle - that's the good news. The bad news is that it was likely not garaged. Much of the plastic on the interior has deteriorated such as the dash, the center console and the seat belt covers in the back. The seats are actually really nice and consistent with the mileage. The door panels are good, one of the map pockets is still intact and this car has the plastic floor mat trays. Volvo celebrates 20 years since 850 wagons came to BTCC
Wed, 30 Apr 2014This year Honda Yuasa Racing brought a station wagon back to the ranks of competitors in the British Touring Car Championship (its drivers currently sit in third and fifth place in the Championship). In 1994, however, Volvo was the first team to run an estate in the series that's one of the best for delivering close racing.
Rickard Rydell and Jan Lammers drove the duo of 850 Estates prepped by Tom Walkinshaw Racing, lining up at Thruxton and proving that the rumors of a wagon in the series weren't a joke. The team used that year for development, getting the 2.0-liter, 290-horsepower, naturally aspirated five-cylinder engine ready for the next year's proper assault. The team's best finish over the 21 races was a fifth place, and they took 14th overall.
Rules changes led Volvo to switch to the 850 sedan the following year, but all the right noises had been made with the wagon. Rydell drive on to a third-place overall finish in 1995, three years later he claimed the Championship title. Volvo 850 T5 R pickup conversion is ready for a cool yule
Mon, 10 Dec 2012There are plenty of ways to get your holiday tree home from the farm, but few are so classy as this Volvo 850 ute. Built in Sweden and shipped to Belgium, the car wears all of the necessary kit to pass as a 850R, and with a turbocharged 2.3-liter five cylinder under the hood, this creation should have no trouble dashing through the snow. Looks like a mighty fine use of an otherwise derelict Volvo wagon to us, though we have to imagine all that torque steer and no weight over the aft would make for all sorts of silliness once the roads went slick.
Still, if it were our Sawzall, we'd be happier with the keys to a certain BMW M5 utility in our pocket. Or, you know, the 3 Series conversion BMW whipped up not too long ago. You can head over to Autofans.be for a closer look at the 850 ute.
Volvo V70 and XC70 and Ocean Race special editions wash ashore ahead of Geneva
Sat, 22 Feb 2014Volvo will unveil the third in its series of new concepts to the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, but it will also bring a flotilla of special editions to the Swiss show. The V70 and XC70 are getting limited-edition models called simply Edition, and the V40, V40 Cross Country, V60 and XC60 will have Volvo Ocean Race Editions.
The Edition models outfit the cars with an extra sprinkling of style. The V70 Edition gets high-gloss black trim on the grille, mirror caps, side window frames and tailgate and rides on silver, 17-inch wheels with high-gloss black 17-inch and 18-inch wheels as options. The XC70 Edition adds some gloss black exterior upgrades too, plus high-gloss black, 18-inch diamond-cut wheels. Both models are swathed in black leather upholstery with cream stitching.
The Volvo Ocean Race Editions celebrate the brand's sponsorship of a 38,739-nautical-mile yacht race that will circumnavigate the world from 2014 to 2015. All of them sport the race logo on the tread plates, front fenders, infotainment display on start-up and special seven-spoke wheels. Inside, there is the choice of black or blonde leather seats with orange stitching. The 60-series cars also sport a map of the race route on the rear load cover.
