This Mercedes-Benz 420 SEL set a new benchmark in safety and automotive design when it was released in 1990.  Even today, you're sure to get looks when you drive down the road in this piece of automotive history.  This generation S-Class was the first series production vehicle in the world to feature airbags and three-point active seatbelt restraints.  Anti-lock brakes were also part of the enormous list of safety features that helped redefined the luxury sedan segment.

This S-Class has 226,123 highway-driven miles and has been owned by a Mercedes-Benz employee for the past 14 years (second owner.  It has been completely maintained at all times.  The vehicle just received a new exhaust and resonator, new fuel lines, brakes, ABS brake lines, tires, and neutral safety switch.

The front right turn signal lamp plastic casing has cracked but the lamp inside remains intact and functions correctly.  There are two small rust repair spots on the front wheel wells that have not been painted (shown in photos).  The front right passenger seat has a few tears in the leather, though the driver seat is completely intact (due to a seat cover).  All electronic systems function correctly and the vehicle still has its original Becker Radio.

The S-Class was originally designed for long-distance, high-speed travel and as a result, still runs very well.  Though the vehicle is large, it handles very precisely and is a joy to drive.

SRT Viper dukes it out with Mercedes SLS Black Series in new Head 2 Head

Fri, 05 Jul 2013

In Episode 36 of Motor Trend's Head 2 Head, now that the Corvette ZR1 is no more, Jonny Lieberman has to look overseas to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series for a challenger with similar philosophy to the SRT Viper: long hood hiding a high-horsepower engine set way back, rear-wheel drive, tiny trunks. That puts the Viper's 8.4-liter V10 with 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque against the SLS AMG's 6.2-liter V8 with 622 hp and 468 lb-ft.
However, the congruences in philosophy and magnitude of numbers doesn't translate to the driving experiences of the two, which are literally and figuratively on different continents. Lieberman gets a handle on the two of them on Northern California roads, Randy Probst then finds out how, and how quickly, they can lap Laguna Seca.
They both get kudos for being improvements on their original sources, but only one of them can take the win. You can find out by watching the video below.

New Die Hard movie wrecked 132 cars in $11 million chase scene [w/video]

Sat, 16 Feb 2013

It would seem the act of dying hard brings with it lots of wanton destruction of the four-wheeled kind. According to John Moore, director of A Good Day To Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis, There were 132 (cars) that could never be used again. Another 518 required a lot of work. And damn right there were some good cars there... That's the fun of it."
Please join us in one great big collective sigh. Done? Okay, let's continue.
"With Die Hard it's about how audacious the action is," says Moore. "So you have to drive over a Lamborghini. An actual one. And yes it hurts me. I'm a car fanatic." Yeah. Sounds like it hurt really bad... though not as bad as the final tally after all the carnage had been counted: "Someone showed me the numbers on the car chase and soup to nuts, you put it all together it was like an $11 million sequence."

Mercedes considering GLA-based crossover coupe

Wed, 30 Apr 2014

BMW opened a whole Pandora's Box when it introduced the X6 back in 2008. Sure it made little sense, sacrificing all that "utility" for a little more "sport," but it's been a solid success for BMW - especially considering the nominal expense it cost to develop the X6 on top of the X5 on which it's based. Little wonder that, while BMW has already followed up with a smaller version in the form of the X4, other automakers are starting to catch up. And that includes Mercedes-Benz.
The German automaker is preparing to launch a new MLC, based on the M-Class but with a sportier silhouette, and previewed it with the Concept Coupe SUV at the Beijing Motor Show. But that's just the start, according to the latest report from Automotive News Europe.
Mercedes is reportedly considering spinning off an entire line of crossovers more for use on the road than off it. Which may go without saying for most crossovers on the market, but considering the Geländwagen with which Mercedes got its start in SUVs, would mean an even further departure than it has undertaken already.
