This is something I’m used to saying about shoes, but now I find myself in the bizarre position of needing to say it about Volvos: I'VE OVER-BOUGHT!!  Here’s the story…

I’ve been driving Volvo 240 wagons exclusively for many years now.  The wagon I’ve been driving for several years now has started to fall apart a bit, so I decided it would be easiest to simply buy a “new” 1993 wagon and demote my current 1993 wagon to mule – using it only to haul things.  So I acquired this beautiful wagon from Massachusetts.  But here’s the thing…  I’ve always, always wanted (1) to own a 240 sedan that matches my 240 wagon, and (2) to own one of the last 1600 Volvo 240s made, the famous, numbered 1993 240 “Classic Limited Edition”.  By the time my “new” wagon – this one I’m selling – had been transported from Massachusetts to my home in the Chicago area, I had found a 240 Classic Limited Edition (#611!) sedan that also just happens to match my 240 wagon – all my dreams rolled into one car!  Combine this with the Volvo S90 my husband acquired from St. Louis around the same time, and we have Volvo overload!

I’m going to include (below)  the original listing that led me to purchase the car. In addition, I will say that I took the car to my Volvo mechanics (Rolf’s, in Evanston, Illinois, if you want to check them out – they’re tops!) and had them thoroughly inspect the car and fix all problems they found, totaling about $2300.  (I’m happy to provide details on request.)  In addition, the car has a Viper security system with two remotes as well as an after-market roof rack and after-market radio/CD player.  One thing that didn’t get done was the center console housing is broken on the right side (next to the passenger seat; see photo) and the side mirror control on that side doesn’t work.  Also, the lock on the rear driver’s side door doesn’t seem to respond with the rest of the locks when the driver’s door is locked or unlocked. The lock functions fine, but only manually.  It's a lovely car, but we only have room for three cars, so last in first out!

Here's the original listing that led me to the car:

THE BEST OF THE LAST THIS 240 Wagon exemplifies why these very collectible daily drivers have become so desirable. This 2 owner exceptionally clean car in and out has only been driven 9,500 miles in the past ten years by a well-respected Metro North Boston repair facilities owner/tech’s wife. As you can imagine the previous owner kept this one in excellent mechanical condition using only original factory Volvo replacement parts. The timing belt and water pump were replaced 4,000 miles ago @ 146,220 miles. Everything is operational on this car such as the odometer and fuel gauge, also the blower motor/fan has a strong 4 speed heating/defrost delivery system to work along with the A/C system (Volvo R134) to give real comfort in the coldest winters and the worst of the summer heat... Both map pockets on front door doors have just been replaced. The center console that houses the power mirror controls and heated seat switches are also in great condition. The center arm rest (rare) only 93 models is mint with drink holders. Due to fading over the last 20 years I elected to change all the lenses front and rear (head lights, tail lights, and both directional lenses). This 240 has every possible option from heated seats, power mirrors, power windows, and door locks, remote start, key less entry, two sets (key fob), 3rd row seating, roof rack, complete set of factory floor mats (equiv. to weather tech)... Clean Ma. Title and all service records.

The only other car I've ever sold was my 1970 Datsun B210 many, many years ago (and I'm actually really sorry I didn't hang on to that one!), so if I haven't included some information, please don't hesitate to contact me with questions, or to contact Rolf's for their take on the car.  Of course you're welcome to schedule a time to come by and look at the car in person and take a test drive.  If you're far away, we're also happy to help facilitate shipping.  Having recently shipped 3 cars ourselves, we've done the research and know what carriers are the best rated for the money.

If you wonder why the weather looks so lovely in some of the photos I've included here, it's because 've had to rely on the original listing photos for the outside shots as the car is currently covered with snow, as you can imagine, though I've added some interior photos I just took today.

Again, don't hesitate to contact me with questions or to schedule a test drive. And don't be afraid to make an offer!  I promise we'll seriously consider all offers and answer promptly and politely!

Volvo returns to profitability

Tue, 14 Jan 2014

Ford sold Volvo to Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Limited in 2010. Just two years later, Geely announced an $11-billion investment in the Swedish carmaker, its charismatic fugleman Li Shifu saying, "We want to revive Volvo and give the brand its strength back." Two years later, after having introduced the Concept XC Coupe at the Detroit Auto Show this week, Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson (above, second from right) declared the company profitable again after a solid 2013 and predicted a positive 2014.
Intending to break even on operating profit in 2013, Volvo exceeded expectations and landed on the plus side due to a mix of factors. US sales declined 10.1 percent for the year to 61,233, that number still making us Volvo's largest market, but Chinese sales were up nearly 46 percent to 61,146 units, and even its home market saw a bump of 0.8 percent; total sales for the year were 427,840, a margin of 1.4-percent over the previous year. Volvo was able to do more with the tiny gain and reverse its half-year operating loss because of a global cost restructuring and thorough revamp of its Chinese distribution network. An announcement of 2013's financial results will come in March.
Bullishness on 2014 comes from the company's intention to focus on its two biggest markets with new models, new technology and more spending. The first product of an independent Volvo, the new XC90, will be revealed later this year on the new SPA architecture. On top of the Sensus Connect infotainment system, Volvo will add driver-aid systems like adaptive cruise control with steer assist and night-time pedestrian detection. It also has a new North American CEO and will spend more on marketing and communications here. In China it will begin to feel more effect from the two Chinese factories opened last year - it has three in the country - and, if need be, can take advantage of more advantageous exchange rates by exporting from China instead of the US. Said Samuelsson of what he expects in the US in 2014, "we will outperform the market."

Volvo Trucks makes some pretty strong brakes

Mon, 05 May 2014

Often dashcam footage from Russia shows some of the worst driving imaginable, but this is an exception. The Volvo truck driver in this video definitely earned himself a drink or two at the end of the day after making it through this potentially horrific crash. As do the folks at Volvo that engineered those brakes.
The truck driver shows some fantastic reaction time as the silver hatchback suddenly pulls out of an intersection. It looks like he only has a few yards to bring the behemoth to a stop before demolishing the little car. While it's an impressive feat, the best part of the video has to be the driver's bow when he gets out of the truck. He looks like a maestro who just finished conducting a symphony asking for a round of applause.
Scroll down to check out this truck driver's skills and see if he earns his bow afterward.

Volvo Polestar reveals new V8 Supercars engine

Mon, 09 Dec 2013

Volvo may be better known for turbo fives and inline fours, but in 2005 it launched the XC90 with a new eight-cylinder engine built for it by Yamaha. Fast forward to this past June when Volvo announced its intention to enter Australia's V8 Supercars series, where it would compete with the likes of Ford, Holden, Nissan and Mercedes-AMG. This is the engine with which it intends to do so.
Revealed this weekend at the Sydney 500, this competition-spec powerplant is based on the same B8444S that powered the XC90 and S80 (not to mention the Noble M600), but tuned for racing duty to be shoehorned into the new S60 touring car. The 60-degree aluminum block has been bored out from 4.4 liters to 5.0, its compression ratio boosted to 10:1, modified to run on E85 bio-ethanol and its redline increased to 7500 rpm. Volvo also promises a unique engine note from its new racers.
While Volvo and its racing partner Polestar haven't released official output numbers, regulations call for outputs between 620 and 650 horsepower - in any event, a whole lot more than the 311 hp it produces in stock form. (Noble managed to squeeze that much out of the same block, but that required twin turbochargers while this unit remains naturally aspirated.) Scope out the details in the press release below and the photos from the reveal in the gallery above.
