1984 Vanagon G.L. in very good condition for its age. I am the second owner, having purchased it from the estate of the first owner about four years ago. I have the origanal window sticker. Owned by non-smokers.  I did an engine conversion about 3 years ago, replacing the 1.9 four cyl with a G.M. 2.6 V-6 that now has about 20,000 miles. The automatic trans was rebuilt a little before that. I used a Kennedy Engineering adaptor. Also replaced at that time were, radiator and plumbing, all brake components, front wheel bearings, high tork starter(also form Kennedy), The engine has  a mild mid-range grind cam and lifters, a 650 C.F.M. Edelbrock carb, Edelbrock tork master intake, and custom duel exhaust. This bus can cruise at 70 all day and will climb any hill with ease, and still gets 15-17 MPG( about the same as the 4 cyl). More recent new parts include, aternater, belt, and battery. The engine and drive train are in excellent condition. I painted the van at the time of the conversion, there are some minor rust issues and some scratches and dings now( check out the pictures). There is a recently developed front end problem that needs attention. The upper control arm bushings on both sides are worn. The van is stilll driveable but will need this issue adressed. I have the bushings and they will be included with the van. Also included is every thing  else needed to overhaul the front end. Upper and lower ball joints, new shocks, new lower control arm bushings, complete tie-rods, new steering rack boots, and front radius rod bushings. I don't have the patience, or time to make the repair. Thanks for looking, I will be glad to answer any questions. The buyer is responcible for the shipping or movement of the vehicle, must be moved within 2 weeks of payment in full. A $500.00 deposite to pay pal within 24 hours of auction close, balance due within 2 weeks. vehicle not released until balance paid. Cash or Certified check cleared. There is no Warranty, sold as is, where is.

Volkswagen lays off 500 Chattanooga workers

Fri, 19 Apr 2013

The redesigned Volkswagen Passat has been a decent seller since its debut in 2011, but sales have apparently dropped off enough that the automaker is trimming some of the employees from its Chattanooga, TN assembly plant. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen will be cutting shifts and laying off 500 contracted workers in response to slowing sales.
Currently, the plant has three teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Saturday, but starting May 13, this will be reduced down to two teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Thursday. This will be done to reduce dealer inventory (the article says that VW dealers, on average, have a 97-day supply of Passats) and production capacity (currently running at an annual pace of 170,000 units, which is more than the 150,000 annual units the plant was planned to produce).
This, of course, isn't saying that the Passat has been a failure since VW added 200 full-time employees to the plant in February 2012 to keep up with increased demand. The AN article says that automakers frequently overstaff plants during the launch of a new product - or in this case, a new product and a new plant - but eventually reduce the workers as things run smoother and more efficiently.

Volkswagen considering a four-door, four-seat XL1

Fri, 22 Aug 2014

According to a report in Autocar, Volkswagen might have more in mind for the XL1 than mining it for advances to grace the next-generation Golf. Aiming to fight the Honda FCEV due for public consumption next year, we're told VW executives have put a four-door, four-seater version of the XL1 - it could be called XL2 - on the drawing board. The impetus is said to come from the top, with VW Group chairman Ferdinand Piëch intent on staying in the deep end of "super-efficent vehicles."
Autocar suspects the necessary changes could raise the weight of the car from 1,749 pounds to 2,068 pounds, which would make it four pounds less than the 2,072-pound Up! we drove a few years ago. Crucially, however, the mag thinks the extra capacity wouldn't change the two-seater's 310-mile-per-gallon rating, with tech tweaks and the aerodynamic benefit of a longer car offsetting the weight. Speculation is that the back seats would be staggered like the fronts in order to maintain the XL1's overall profile.
We recently heard about another XL1 variant that's gone off the radar entirely, the Ducati-engined XLR that we thought we'd see at the Geneva Motor Show and that was said to be going into production, so this one could go the same way. The biggest hurdle to making such an idea a reality, though, could be the price: the current XL1 costs 110,000 euros ($146,116). If VW really is going to compete with the Honda FCEV and the Toyota FCV - $70,000 in Japan - that might be where it wants to start.

VW builds 250,000th Passat in Chattanooga in just two years

Sun, 26 May 2013

It hasn't been without incident or union organizing drive, but the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, TN has built its 250,000 Passat in just a little over two years. The Night Blue Passat TDI with black leather has come just two years and five weeks after the first customer car came off the line on April 18, 2011.
In the last year the plant operated at the 150,000-unit capacity that it was intended for, but the downturn in Passat sales and subsequent worker layoffs mean it will be a challenge to repeat the feat. The plant does have the world's largest solar park, though, and you can't take that away from them.
You'll find the official hand-clapping in the press release below.
