1976 VW Passenger Bus

Offered here for auction is a 1976 Volkswagen passenger bus. It features new paint and a fuel-injected flat four motor. It’s been a California bus since new and shows no signs of rust or corrosion. The panels are very good and the underside is excellent. Front floors have no holes or rotting, either. On the inside, the bus is "Plain Jane," but the often missing middle seat is intact, allowing for transport of 9 passengers easily.

Up front, the rare passenger "bench seat" has been reupholstered and looks great. This set up creates a "non walk-through" design, which is quite unique. Most buses have bucket seats. The rear passenger seats are in good, original condition, and are not beat up. The inside panels are also intact and complete. Paint is of driver quality, but it’s thick and has a nice shine and luster, as shown in the pictures.

The VW runs good and can go on the highway no problem. The motor is quiet and the idle is steady. There’s no smoke, even under hard acceleration. Spark plugs show no black soot or oil. The fuel injection allows the motor to start easily and provides good power, but the idle is a little low and should be raised, in my opinion. The transmission and clutch operate as they should. There are no odd noises or popping out of gear. All tires have good tread.

Like every old VW, this one has some needs, nothing major, though. The driver seat is taped and needs to be reupholstered. Headliner has normal tears. There is no radio or speakers. Included is an extra set of front door panels w/o speaker cut-outs. The signals and gas gauge are currently working, but are temperamental, and occasionally blow a fuse if headlights and signal are used together. Rear side marker lenses are missing. Horn doesn’t work. The headlights, brights, wipers, and brake lights are all functioning properly.

I have receipts dating back to the 1980s from previous owners showing the bus had a rebuilt engine and regular maintenance in the way of valve adjustments, oil changes, etc.

This VW Bus is quite a crowd pleaser. Its striking appearance makes strangers want to talk to you and share their fond VW memories. Owning it will make you proud. It’s also a fine investment that’s fun and is sure to rise in value. No doubt. Bid to Win and Enjoy!

Cruze Diesel Road Trip reveals the good and bad, but no ugly

Tue, Mar 31 2015

Most of us have strong opinions on diesel-powered cars based on our perceptions of and experience with them. I used to thoroughly dislike oil burners for their noise, smoke and lackluster performance, and the fact that they ran on greasy, smelly stuff that was more expensive than gasoline, could be hard to find and was nasty to get on your hands when refueling. Those negatives, for me, trumped diesel's major positives of big torque for strong acceleration and better fuel economy. Are any of those knocks on diesel still valid today? I'm not talking semis, which continue to annoy me when their operators for some reason almost never shut them down. At any busy truck stop, the air seems always filled with the sound – and sometimes smell – of dozens of big-rig diesels idling endlessly and mindlessly. Or diesel heavy-duty pickups. Those muscular workhorses are far more refined than they once were and burn much less fuel than their gasoline counterparts. But good luck arriving home late at night, or departing early morning, without waking your housemates and neighbors with their clattery racket. No, I'm talking diesel-powered passenger cars, which account for more than half the market in Europe (diesel fuel is cheaper there) yet still barely bump the sales charts in North America. Diesel fuel remains more expensive here, too few stations carry it, and too many Americans remember when diesel cars were noisy, smelly slugs. Also, US emissions requirements make them substantially more expensive to certify, and therefore to buy. But put aside (if you can) higher vehicle purchase and fuel prices, and today's diesel cars can be delightful to drive while delivering much better fuel efficiency than gas-powered versions. So far in the US, all except Chevrolet's compact Cruze Diesel come from German brands, and all are amazingly quiet, visually clean (no smoke) and can be torquey-fun to drive. When a GM Powertrain engineering team set out to modify a tried-and-true GM of Europe turbodiesel four for North American Chevy Cruze compacts, says assistant chief engineer Mike Siegrist, it had a clear target in mind: the Volkswagen Jetta TDI 2.0-liter diesel. And they'll tell you that they beat it in nearly every way. "I believe we have a superior product," he says. "It's powerful, efficient and clean, and it will change perceptions of what a diesel car can be." The 2.0L Cruze turbodiesel pumps out 151 SAE certified horses and 264 pound-feet of torque (at just 2,000 rpm) vs.

Seat Leon Sport Cross concept leaks before Frankfurt debut

Mon, Sep 14 2015

Seat's big Frankfurt Motor Show debut has been teased/leaked ahead of its official debut. The teasers are, of course, directly from Seat and show the new Leon Cross Sport Concept in a pair of sketches. You can check those out below. The leaked stuff, available up top, is far juicier, though. The shots originally came from AutoForum.cz, Auto Express reports, and look to be stock images of the three-door hatchback. In short, it looks like a Seat Leon, which is to say the MQB-based Spaniard is a more attractive Volkswagen Golf. In concept form, though, this new Leon is something of an anomaly. It wears the steroidal sheetmetal of the high-performance Cupra, especially with the large wheels and prominent quad exhausts, but its boosted ride gives it much more of a soft-roader character. Think of this, then, as a high-riding Golf GTI. It'll be a lot more potent than the beloved hot hatch, though. According to Auto Express, the Leon Cross Sport will use the Golf R's 296-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine and Haldex all-wheel-drive system. That should mean that there'll be some very real off-road performance behind the soft-roader looks. We'll have much more on the Cross Sport Concept when it makes its debut at Volkswagen's huge Group Night event later today. Stay tuned.

Suspended VW exec Hackenberg resigns in wake of scandal

Fri, Dec 4 2015

Ulrich Hackenberg, father of the innovative modular architecture that underpins many modern Volkswagen and Audi products and a 30 year veteran of the giant company, has resigned his position as the lead engineer for the entire Volkswagen Group as well as his seat on Audi's management board, reports Automotive News. The resignation closes out a two-month suspension while the investigation into VW's deceptive emissions practices continues. The resignation follows the admission by Audi that the 3.0-liter TDI V6 engine was also fitted with emissions-control defeating software, like some of its four-cylinder TDI counterparts. In turn, this lead to changes in Audi's management structure. AN reports that Matthias Muller, who has already taken over Martin Winterkorn's position as VW Group CEO, will also be named chairman of the Audi brand.Hackenberg's successor was named as part of this announcement. Stephan Knirsch, who has lead engine development at the Audi division, will assume Hackenberg's roles as both board member for Audi in charge of technical development, and as the head for technical development across the whole group.Related Video:
