I bought this van in 2007 from a fella who blew the engine down in Mexico. (popped a hole in a piston) We got it back to Bisbee, AZ and I rebuilt the engine, replacing crank arms, pistons, rings, and cylinders.  He had purchased from a lady in Tucson who claimed to be the original owner.  She's the one who had it painted.  Originally it was green-very green-green like you would want your lawn-not your van.  Not sure who had the seats recovered but they sure were not concerned with matching the original plaid.  Not sure why they didn't just have the beds recovered, too.
I drove the van, carrying music equipment and friends for several years. Often, I would drive to CA to see my son. Then I decided to just stay in CA and I lived in the van and tent in the Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu, renting a spot on Sterling Buell's land (off-grid). It was magic. He might still have a spot.
That tent you see I purchased from Byrd Holland himself(the B movie director, actor) many years before I bought the van.  Actually it was stashed in a one-off, European "caravan" that I purchased from Byrd. He was such a character. If you ever meet him ask to hear his original southern accent as he's from Georgia.   Anyway, the tent was BRAND NEW. But then I moved to the mountains and erected the tent, attached it to the van and lived there for twelve amazing months with no electricity or prospects for it. The tent sustained a little damage-couple of tears-but that tent made living in a VW Van pretty darn awesome.  I must mention that those thirty-nine year old zippers on the front entryway are cantankerous.  They operate but one must have zen patience.
You can open and close the van door with no problem WITH the tent attached making two separate rooms. There's a screen on the front of the tent that zips closed also. and two "windows" on each side of the tent.
Frankly, at music festivals, vw shows, carnivals, freakshows, and other alternative gatherings the colorful van/tent combo attracts too much attention for this loner but maybe you like visitors, maybe you'll enjoy the attention. That's none of my business.
I've since moved back to society and it's time to let you have them both. (the van and the tent).
The area behind the spare tire is ever-so-slightly pushed inward. I didn't even know til I took the spare off recently.  Seems someone bumped into something.
The seals might need to be replaced someday as I didn't do that and there is some oil leaking from somewhere. I suspect it's the rear seal. It's not much of a leak as i drove it from Bisbee, AZ to Los Angeles with minimal oil usage.  There is no radio. Never was while I've owned it. I preferred to listen to the engine and let my mind wander while driving.  One should always listen to a VW engine for minor changes.  There are some speakers in the doors, however.
The brake light comes on when NOT depressing the brake pedal but the brakes work very well.
It's tough to downshift into second gear but she starts right up and runs so darn well no matter how long it has sat so I forgive that.
When I broke the engine in after the rebuild I promise I never went over 47 mph for the first six hundred miles.  I'm serious, y'all.  It drove my friends and the folks behind me crazy.
That little aftermarket cigarette lighter never worked. Neither did the florescent light in the back.
The pump doesn't work on the sink.  That bummed me out but I never got around to fixing it so I've never used the sink.  Sorry.
The canvas top was replaced at some point but I had it up for that year I lived in it so It got a little faded but it's perfect otherwise.  (I did cover it after a couple of months with a tarp but the fading had already happened.
And ya know the little wing window in the back for your cigarette smoke?:  It's missing the knob but it still works. The REAR ashtray is missing too. The front ashtray is still there. Imagine that: it had a rear ashtray.
I love this van.  (remember, I lived in it. This is hard y'all.)
The taillights, brake lights, turn indicator lights and the 110 "city" electric outlet  are malfunctioning.
I installed new CV boots on the axles and packed in lots of grease, of course.  That was fun. I also installed a new heavy duty sway bar, or rather, ANTI sway bar.
The tent will be under the back seat when you get here.  fits in there real nice.
I'm throwing in the bug screen that goes over the back door(when it's open)as I really would have no need for it.
I've never put new tires on it and they are showing a little(very little) weathering.  Lots of tread, though.
I think it needs a new blower motor for the heater to really work but even without the blower I managed to stay warm in the winters of the high desert, AZ.
The original jack is also included.

Bentley considering diesel engine for new SUV

Wed, 05 Mar 2014

Turns out, in case you didn't know, the rich are just like regular people. They too are concerned about the environment, even when tooling around town in their super-luxurious Bentleys. So the automaker is weighing the idea of offering a diesel engine in its SUV offering, which could help satisfy customers' demands for more fuel-efficient engines.
Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Schreiber told Autoblog in a roundtable interview at the Geneva Auto Show that the automaker is researching whether or not a diesel engine makes sense for the brand. Bentley, owned by the Volkswagen Group, could in theory use a diesel engine from anywhere in the Volkswagen Group family. We at Autoblog have hopes they'll revive the V10 TDI used in the VW Touareg until 2010, but ever-stricter emissions laws would likely make that problematic.
But rich people aren't so much like us that they'll be worried about petty things like pricing. Schreiber admitted the diesel engine could be a $15,000 option, which he said customers would probably find "acceptable." Given that the cheapest Bentley today starts at $177,000, typical customers probably won't be diddling around worrying about an extra 15 grand.

2015 VW Golf R caught getting a flogging on 'Ring

Wed, 22 May 2013

The upcoming version of the Volkswagen Golf R is nearly ready for prime time, if this video of the car flying around the Nürburgring is any indication. The all-wheel-drive R seems to make quick, neat work of the corners we see here, and sounds pretty devilish in the process.
Expectations are that the new Golf R will run a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (what else?), tuned to produce even more than the current car's 256 horsepower. (Some sources have indicated outputs as high as 286 horsepower, with 280 pound-feet of torque. It's still not clear if Volkswagen will bring the six-speed dual-clutch transmission to the US-spec Golf R in this next go-round or if we'll stick to having only... eh... the stick.
In either case - watching the video below will only whet your appetite for the new, highest performing member of the Golf family.

GM outsold VW globaly in first quarter, Toyota reports numbers next week

Thu, 18 Apr 2013

General Motors released its first quarter sales figures this week, reporting that it sold 2.36 million cars and trucks worldwide. That figure represents an increase of 3.6 percent when compared to the same period last year. GM's growth was attributed to many factors, including global Cadillac sales that were up 26 percent and Chevrolet posting a one percent increase over last year (this marked Chevy's tenth straight year of record global sales).
Volkswagen came in just behind GM, as the German automaker reported global sales from January through March at 2.27 million vehicles, an increase of five percent when compared to last year. While that number was strong, VW is cautioning that markets outside China and the US, such as those in Europe, are becoming a challenge as economies falter.
Yet to report sales is Toyota, current holder of the global world sales crown (the Japanese company sold 9.75 million cars last year, against 9.29 million sold by GM and 9.1 million vehicles sold by VW). Even though GM and Toyota both say they don't care who sells the most units, it is unquestionably a strong bragging point and sales equate to revenue. That said, Toyota will report its first quarter numbers next week.
