I built this Hummbug kit car in summer 1999 using a 1970 VW Beetle pan with new floorboards welded in.  The kit is no longer available.  Build manual and construction photos available.  Engine came off a '73 Thing.  Transmission replaced 2010.  Titled as a 1970 VW Beetle.  Odometer reads 44K but was installed used.  Total mileage likely less than 2-3K.  We have enjoyed many fun cruises in the region with our Hummbug but now making room for new projects.  Unsnap/remove the installed vinyl top, fold down the windshield and feel the wind in your face.  One photo shows the car with a 'bikini' top that is not included (scrapped after insufficient headroom).  I have a towbar for the vehicle that you can have.  Oil has been serviced routinely, car has been garaged with cloth cover, battery kept on a trickle charger.  Starts and runs great, really fun to drive, and draws a crowd every time you stop for fuel.

Drive it in a parade and blow the siren!  Your kids/grandkids will love it!

EBay software won't allow me to enter the true VIN, which is actually  1102421901

I would prefer that auction winner pick the car up locally but will otherwise be happy to work with your shipper in getting this vehicle to you.

Car companies may need to start curbing model proliferation

Mon, 17 Nov 2014

Looking at the current automotive landscape, especially from German makers, you quickly get the impression that less definitely isn't more. BMW alone offers its 3 Series platform in practically every segment possible, including the regular sedan and 4 Series Gran Coupe, which would seem to be direct competitors. Porsche might be the winner, though, with 20 different variants of the 911 listed for sale on its US website. However, some of this model madness might be reaching an end as companies begin cutting back spending or shifting money to other priorities.
According to Yahoo Finance, the offerings from the German automakers are up 25 percent over the past three years to over 200 models in Europe. The peak is expected to come around 2018 at 230 separate vehicles, according to consulting company PwC.
Amazingly, BMW, which is among the poster children for this model explosion, might be changing its tune. "I'm sure there will be points in the future where we look at certain cars and say, 'Maybe we need to think differently now,'" said head of sales Ian Robertson in an interview, according to Yahoo Finance. The statement certainly sounds shocking coming from a company rumored to have 23 front-wheel-drive vehicles all using a single platform on the way.

Honda wins Commercial of the Decade, but not for the ad you think [w/VIDEO]

Honda's Commercial of the Decade: "Grrr" - Click above to watch video
The mad men at Adweek recently voted for the Commercial of the Decade (Super Bowl commercials not included) and Honda took top honors over memorable ads from the last ten years by companies like Nike, Budweiser and Sony. That's not a big surprise considering Honda often puts a huge amount of effort into its on-air spots. However, the Japanese automaker didn't win for the commercial you might have expected: "Cog." Though Honda's famous commercial that breaks down a European Accord Tourer into a Rube Goldberg-esque machine was also a finalist, it was beaten by another Honda commercial called "Grrr" that's narrated by Garrison Keillor of all people. You've probably never seen it, but you can after the jump.
Volkswagen also made the list of finalists, but the particular ad chosen out of all the comical VW ads we've seen was unexpected as well. Most surprising carmaker with a commercial in the finals: Saturn. Who knew...

J.D. Power customer survey of dealers counts Cadillac, Buick as big winners

Mon, 14 Apr 2014

Cadillac and Buick have taken the trophies in J.D. Power's latest Customer Service Index Study examining satisfaction with dealer service. Surveying more than 90,000 owners and lessees of 2009-2013 model-year cars, the study found that those with pre-paid maintenance packages were ten percent more likely to buy their next car from the same brand.
Dealer satisfaction scores have improved overall, Cadillac nabbed the luxury segment ahead of Audi and Lexus, taking the crown that Lexus held last year. Buick keeps the mass-market dealer satisfaction win in the family, finishing ahead of Volkswagen and last year's winner GMC. The study also found that service department use of tablets increased customer satisfaction, as did "best practices" like "providing helpful advice." Who knew?
You can find details on those and more findings in the press release below.
