1974 California Super Beetle - Volkswagen Special Model

  • Being SOLD AS IS.
  • Odometer reads 99117, but I know it has been around at least twice if not more.
  • I believe we are the second owners.  Vehicle was sold out of Long Beach, California. We've had the car since mid 1970's and have been using it day to day as a commuter and errands vehicle.

Some problems listed, and these are definitely not all:

  • Original engine is frozen, I have not had any professional look at it. (no picture) - it won't turn over or push start.
  • Driver side door leaks (no picture)
  • Sunroof did leak, but was sealed with glue.
  • Bot doors, speaker has broken out,  speaker covers are included and speakers are not any good.
  • Passenger side mirror - the mirror is missing - see picture
  • Passenger side plastic trim between fender and body - has popped out - se picture.
  • Original seats, back seat has original corduroy.  Front seats corduroy was replaced.  All of these have rotted out with age. The seat filling is falling out.  Seat springs are felt.  Seat covers are about a year old and in good condition.
  • The stick shift handle broke and a custom made orange  pool ball was used.
  • 8-track tape player / radio is original (dealer add-on?).  It does not work.
  • CB player is not original, and was added in 1977.  It does not work anymore
  • Tissue box is an add-on.
  • The two fog lights were an addition circa 1984.  They were never hooked up and I don't know if they work.
  • The car exterior was painted once, the same color.  It has peeled on the hood.
  • The exterior chrome is either missing or loose.
  • The original jack is included.
  • There is also a locking gas cap.  Both the locking and unlocking gas caps O-rings are worn out.
  • Tires were purchased in January 2014

Volkswagen drops "GTi" lawsuit against Suzuki

Tue, 02 Oct 2012

Way back in 2004, Volkswagen took umbrage with Suzuki being granted permission to use the nameplate "SWIFT GTi" for a performance variant of its small-car offering (2012 equivalent seen here). Now, eight years and surely some very steep legal bills later, VW has finally dropped its claim against Suzuki.
The General Court of the European Union stated, back in March of this year, that Suzuki's GTi registration could not be confused with VW's "Golf GTI." Volkswagen had appealed that ruling, though has now reportedly called off the dogs. In fact, Germany's Die Welt reports that the appeal has been dead for several weeks now.
This news comes amongst continued arbitration acrimony between the two automakers, all revolving around VW's forced divestiture of nearly 20-percent stake it purchased in Suzuki some two years ago.

VW looking to MAN up, ditch Mercedes van deal

Wed, 16 Jan 2013

Unlike the US, the commercial truck market throughout the rest of the world is chocked full of competitors from many different automakers. Since 2006, Volkswagen has had a fullsize van called the Crafter that was a result of a partnership with Daimler AG and based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. This partnership is supposed to last through 2016, but Reuters is reporting that VW might be looking to end its relationship with Daimler and create its own van in cooperation with German truck and bus maker MAN.
The article says that VW AG has more than a 75-percent stake in MAN, which would essentially be keeping the new commercial vehicle in-house. Even if VW bolts, Daimler still has a deal worked out in the commercial truck industry between its subsidiary Mitsubishi Fuso and Renault-Nissan to supply the other with different trucks.

VW budget sub-brand stuck in limbo over VW standards, costs

Sat, 01 Mar 2014

Reports in October 2012 claimed Volkswagen had begun investigating the creation of its own budget brand. This came after having failed to purchase Malaysian car company Proton or produce a meaningful partnership with Suzuki, and after watching Renault-Nissan make piles of euro on Dacia and plot the return of Datsun.
For VW, more important than the question of what to call it was how to build it profitably and in a way that didn't damage the VW brand. According to a report in Autocar, a satisfactory answer still hasn't been found. The hurdle is how to hit "'necessary' quality and safety levels" at the price points needed to make the venture worthwhile. At the time of the 2012 report, German outlet Der Spiegel said VW was trying to get prices down to 6,000 to 8,000 euro ($7,784 to $10,379 US), about two thousand to four thousand euro under the price of the VW Up and in line with the cost of a 6,790-euro Dacia Sandero in Germany.
In March 2013, VW announced, "We want to bring a true budget car to the market in China in the foreseeable future," the most concrete move in that direction after years of planning to make a decision. Working with local Chinese maker FAW, it was predicted that the vehicle in question would appear around 2016, but as of November last year a final vote on it needed to wait until this year because "We are still working on the cost side" and profit possibilities for a car that "has to be durable, it has to be precise, it has to be safe."
