1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle. Electric Car! Never Buy Gas Again! on 2040-cars

Year:1973 Mileage:61000
Location:

Phoenix, Arizona, United States

Very fun and unique 1973 VW Super Beetle.  I recently purchased this car from a charity auction as a novelty project car, but within a couple of days of buying it my house flooded causing some major damage.  So I don't believe I will have time to focus on it and I am putting it up for sale.

This is a very unusual car.  Eco-friendly, all electric vehicle.  Never buy gas again!

At some point in it's life this cool little Bug has been converted into an electric vehicle.  It looks like it has been driven this way for quite awhile, so I don't think it is an unfinished project.  When I bought it several of the batteries where missing and I have not installed new ones.  So in other words I have never driven the car.  Besides the batteries, the car looks complete, minus the horn button.

The body is decent.  I have not seen any rust to be concerned about.  Some minor surface rust in places.  The car has an older repaint that is still shiny.  There are chips and scratches all over.  The car could be driven as it is, but the paint is not great.  All the glass is good.  The tires are pretty good.  There is a crack around the hood latch up front that needs to be repaired.  The bumpers are shiny but dented.

The interior is just so-so.  The seats are a little dry, but could be used.  The headliner is good.  The carpet could be used.  The dash has cracks and is somewhat incomplete (see pictures).  The passenger door panel has come loose from the door.  It could probably be reattached.

I do not know much about electric car conversions, so I will do my best to list what this car has.  In place of the original motor is a very large electric motor that is hooked up to the manual transmission.  The motor looks like it is run by either 36, 48, or 72 volts.  It appears that each of the 12 volt batteries has it's own charger.  So when the 110v cord is plugged into a standard outlet, all the batteries will charge.  It is complete under the hood and everything is hooked up.

The car has a clean and clear Arizona title.  The odometer shows 61K miles and the title states the miles are correct and original.  I never spoke to the previous owner so I have no history of the car.  I am selling this as a project car that needs work, so please do not expect to drive it home.  I don't know what it will take to drive it as I never tried.

A deposit of $1000 is due within 24 hours of the close of auction.  The remainder is due within 7 days.  Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer.  The car was purchased under my company so Arizona buyers will have to pay sales tax.  No other fees (no doc fees, etc).  The car is located in Phoenix, Arizona.

This is my first VW so I am no expert.  I welcome and encourage any and all questions about the car and will do my best answering.

Volkswagen Routan dead, pour out a sippy cup for your little homies

Thu, 28 Mar 2013

America's minivan wolfpack has just gotten smaller by one. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen officials have confirmed what we've suspected for some time - the Routan is dead. Essentially a lightly reworked version of the Dodge Grand Caravan, the Routan actually hasn't been rolling off of Chrysler's Windsor, Ontario production line at all this year, but VW had yet to confirm its discontinuation. However, Jonathan Browning, CEO of VW America, has reportedly admitted that the Routan is being axed, with remaining units expected to be funneled into corporate functions for "internal purposes."
The move isn't unexpected - the Routan has never been a big seller, with just 57,650 examples moved since sales began in 2008 - peak yearly sales totaled under 16,000 units, and that was back in 2010. And while many have talked of the minivan segment shrinking, Automotive News points out that the segment actually grew 14 percent last year to 597,118 units, though it should be noted that most segments have been on sales upticks as the US economy chugs out of its recession.
So, is volume-crazy Volkswagen prepared to pass on large family vehicle sales? Probably not - the German automaker has signaled that it plans to build a three-row crossover in North America soon, and we wouldn't be surprised if it looks an awful lot like the Crossblue Concept from January's Detroit Auto Show - minus the fancy plug-in diesel powertrain.

Europeans get first crack at new Golf Variant wagon

Mon, 04 Mar 2013

Just last week, when we brought you news of a new Volkswagen Golf variant out and testing in Europe, we had no idea we were being so literal with out description. For it seems that VW has every intention of calling its new Golf wagon, making its Geneva debut, the "Golf Variant."
Odd/interesting sobriquets taken as read then, there's a lot to like about this new small wagon from VW. The Variant will shed some 232 pounds in this generation, and will come to market with two efficient TDI engines. Volkswagen isn't giving us displacement figures for either yet, but we're told the diesels will come with outputs of 110 and 150 horsepower. The 110-hp TDI BlueMotion Varient will be good for a whopping 71.3 miles per gallon on the European cycle, when mated to the six-speed manual transmission.
The German automaker has brought along an all-wheel-drive 4Motion version of the Gold Variant to bow in Geneva, as well, and a natural gas-burning TGI BlueMotion is said to be "in the pipeline."

Volkswagen looking to acquire Proton, Lotus?

Thu, 26 Jul 2012

Let's say you're an automaker bent on world domination looking to grow your sales. That's going to have you looking at Asian markets, because that's where some of the biggest growth has been, and that's exactly what Volkswagen is doing as it considers making another run at Malaysia's Proton.
Reuters reports that Volkswagen is interested in at least a partial stake, if not a controlling interest in Lotus-parent Proton as a way to continue a production presence in the region without having to build its own factory.
Volkswagen already builds the Passat in a DRB-HICOM facility in Pekan, Malaysia, and plans are in place to build the Jetta and Polo there, as well. With both southeast Asia and its relationship with Proton figuring so importantly in Volkswagen's plans for expansion, buying into Proton can help ensure stability. Volkswagen is being tight-lipped about the whole idea, but CEO Martin Winterkorn did recently say, "it's our clear goal to continue the successful (expansion) course of past years with great dynamics and stability," which sounds an awful lot like deals are on the table to smooth the path to further growth.
