...you will be transported back to the early 70’s enjoying an exceptionally clean TR6 Roadster.

The car is presented for auction here on eBay with NO RESERVE.

Designed with assistance from the German studio of Wilhelm Karmann in Osnabr"uck, the TR6 was the penultimate effort in a long line of classic British sports cars made by Standard-Triumph. Its successor, the homely TR7/8, has never really achieved collectible status.

Thus, the TR6 was the last of the hairy-chested, body-on-frame Roadsters, with a brawny straight-six up front, preferably to be driven with the top down.

With the average car's lifespan being about a dozen years and its attrition rate often accelerated by careless, second-hand owners, it'd be a nice surprise to find an example of the species that, despite being  nearly 40 years old, still shines and sparkles like a late-model.

The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of open-air enthusiasts.

The wonderful 1974 TR6 presented here is a true survivor. Built in May of 1974, VIN * CF21730* left the gates of Coventry England and made its journey to Sunny, Southern California.

Owned by a 93 Year-old British car collector, it was driven sparingly as a weekend-only toy to club events and pampered like a favorite child.

Let's have a closer look now.

Exterior:

Some years ago, the car was refinished from its original sable brown color to a nice, driver quality Signal Red.

The finish has a few small chips and scratches but otherwise looks great.

Surveying the car's straight and smooth coachwork today, we marvel at how well the body was preserved over the years.

The newer convertible top fits tight as a drum with no tears, leaks, or wind noises.

The rear window has a zip-down feature allowing fresh air (or a surf board) to come through.

With the top folded down the included Tonneau Cover snaps on easily for wind in your hair enjoyment.

Remember, this is an old-school British roadster: the top is only to be closed in an absolute emergency, i.e., in a hurricane or when fully submerged!

The Tonneau Cover is very practical; When you are about to go cruising by yourself, you just unzip the driver's side. Makes for a draft-free drive, and--if needed--the heater works much better, too!

Full Tonneau Cover permits you to leave the TR's top down when parking it, yet protecting the interior from unfavorable weather and all-too-curious passers-by.

Newer radials are fitted to refinished, 6J x 15" factory steel rims with chromed lug nuts, center caps and aluminum beauty rings; wheel detail is amazing.

Speaking of detail, let us stress how immaculate the body is, how sparkling the chrome, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 4-year old, not a 40-year old car. This one is that clean!

While we’re down here on our knees, let’s have a look underneath.

More important than shiny paint is a healthy undercarriage. This original chassis presents itself free of any kind of damage or corrosion.

Ol' Sherlock himself could inspect this TR's belly with his magnifying glass and may find some minor surface rust but not an ounce of corrosion.

Aside from a little normal seepage around the engine components, there are no major drips. A close look at the suspension confirms: everything is clean and tight!

Most importantly, there is absolutely NO collision repair or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights.

Let’s have a peak under the hood.

Engine & Mechanical:

The car's engine compartment is immaculate.

The 2.5-liter, six cylinder power plant inhales through dual Stromberg carburetors delivering 150 horses to the 4-speed non-overdrive transmission.

It sounds crisp and runs smoothly, like a turbine, with superb oil pressure, cold or hot. Surprisingly perhaps, the wiring looks fantastic, the car always runs cool, and there is no smoke or excessive fluid loss.

Beyond routine tune-ups & oil changes, thousands of dollars were invested into preventative maintenance, mainly to the engine, its ancillaries, suspension and drive train.

Within the last 5,000 miles, hoses, belts and switches have been replaced, clutch and brakes have been changed, carburetor was tuned, plugs renewed and the battery was replaced. No wear item has been left unattended; as a result, this TR6 is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically.

We'll inspect the interior next, shall we?

The Triumph’s black upholstery is as clean as can be.

The bucket seats with small head rests, door panels, carpeting, and sun visors still look great.

Both convertible top and frame are pristine.

The TR6's luxuriously outfitted cockpit is a world apart from the austerity of a TR3 or early TR4, keeping more in line with a Jaguar E-Type or Jensen.

A true British Roadster must have a wooden dashboard, and the TR6 is no exception. A full array of SMITHS gauges all work flawlessly with perfect silk screening of the instrument dials. With the exception of a small crack on the upper dash pad, the lower vinyl pad sections, knee pads and sun visors are crack free. The wood fascia was re-finished and looks beautiful.

The original steering wheel shows little wear and an auxiliary switch is located here for the fog lights. An upgraded, AM/FM stereo cassette (how modern!) guarantees pleasurable audio, even when traveling topless at speeds well above the double nickel.

Let’s have a peek inside the boot.

The carpeted trunk is surprisingly large. Included here is lug wrench, jacking equipment and the Triumph Owner’s Handbook.

Matching wheel with original, Michelin Redline spare tire resides in a separate compartment below a carpeted wooden partition. A typical TR6 weak spot would be the trunk floor. Out of sight and deeply recessed, it is usually the first place where corrosion develops.

Things are different here!

No corrosion is to be found. The sable brown paint inside is still 100% factory original.

Drivability:

Invigorating is the word that best describes this TR6 experience. The Roadster runs like a cheetah on the prowl. Its suspension layout is intelligently engineered and the power-to-weight ratio is very favorable, indeed.

In any climate, the powerful 6-cylinder engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly through the gears without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror.

Warmed up, the oil pressure ranges from about 30 lbs. at idle to a reassuring 75 lbs. at speed. Coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds.

Throwing this TR through the curves, the strong engine emanates throaty, lusty sounds. The clutch is firm and the fully synchronized, 4-speed transmission shifts very smooth and precise in all gears. The disc brakes anchor the car securely without and noises or vibrations.

Handling is simple and superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this Triumph is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive!

Pound for pound, Triumph's TR6 is one of the finest, most fun post-war British sports cars. Being the last of the breed, a TR6 is a highly collectible Classic with fantastic appreciation potential, one that can easily serve as a reliable daily driver.

To make things even better, the car gets 25 MPG on regular gas and is smog exempt in California. Reasonably priced spares - as well as extremely affordable classic car insurance are readily available.

Looking back, you realize that, somewhere in time, the chapter of the true British Roadster has ended. It has ended with the introduction of engine management systems; it has ended with the worldwide popularity of power steering, power windows, power tops, and power-assisted thinking, even in Her Majesty's Kingdom. It has ended with the Triumph.

This Triumph TR6 however is up to any task imaginable. It could serve as a show car, a "new" old car to relive the good old days, or simply as a weekend driver during ANY time of the year. At the very least, no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own.

To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise!

Jaguar F Type V6 S vs Triumph Street Triple R in open-air track attack

Sun, 21 Sep 2014

Typically, these track battle videos pair up car against car or, in more disparate circumstances, car versus crossover, as we saw the other day. While the outcome of that battle was quite predictable, what'll happen when an equally fetching (and fast) four-wheeler is put up against one of the icons of the two-wheeled world? Evo just had to find out.
Matching up a Jaguar F-Type V6 S Convertible against a Triumph Street Triple R is at least more of an even fight than the last battle between the Porsche Cayman GTS and Macan Turbo. The Triumph has a 675-cc engine to work with, and is very light. Meanwhile, the Jag has a thumping 380-horsepower, 3.0-liter, supercharged V6 to haul about it's considerably heftier heft. Who will come out on top?
You'll need to watch the full video to find out.
