The above links are well worth a look because exceptional automobiles such as this rarely come along.

A team of Porsche engineers led by Ferdinan Pi?ch in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen knew exactly what they had in mind when they designed the 914. Its mid-engine and impeccable handling evokes Porsche's legendary race cars, such as the 550 Spyder, the RSK, and the 904 GTS! With an air-cooled, economical VW 4 cylinder engine, the 914 was considered the “People’s Porsche” but their big twin brothers, the ill-fated 914-6 and 916 were genuine Supercars in their time. Now over 40-years old, pristine, original 914-6’s are rapidly appreciating with 6-figure price tags and a 916 (only eleven built) may fetch 7 figures!

Although the 914 and 914-6 had an advanced body, their 1.7 to 2.0 liter engines (both 4 and 6-cylinder versions) were under powered, the brakes were too small, shifting was vague and the bodies weren’t as rigid as the 911 coupe. As such, people began modifying 914s ever since they started rolling off the assembly line.

Unfortunately, many were saddled with heavy, V-8 engines, butchered and molested beyond recognition (and desirability) with fiberglass make-up kits.

But when the best 911 components and most costly upgrades are faithfully integrated into its perfectly balanced chassis, the metamorphosis is a proper 914-6 “Tribute” car which--in many ways--is better than the real thing.

Not surprisingly, perhaps, resale values for nice 914-6 conversions are also strong and finding one of the top 1% examples is like winning the lottery.

Here's one!

Built-up from a four cylinder 914 shell, this car was highly upgraded with a long list expensive performance components and modifications including full racing suspension, genuine Fuchs alloy wheels and a rebuilt, 2.4-liter 911 flat six engine!

The current owner is a mature, prominent businessman who keeps the car covered and sheltered in his “man cave” among a private collection of museum quality Porsches. During his ownership, (less than 800 miles ago) the car was mechanically “perfected” and the interior was completely re-upholstered in full leather with Dynamat lining throughout the car and plush cut-pile carpeting. No expense was spared with upgraded power windows, door locks, keyless entry and a Bluetooth audio system. All receipts are available in PDF and can be emailed or faxed to you.

Hence, a unique opportunity arises to obtain a coveted “6”; one that was pampered beyond belief by a mature owner with big pockets and the willingness to pay up for the best service and upgrades money can buy.

Let's check out this dream find now, inside and out!

From a distance, this Porsche is indistinguishable from a factory original 914-6 however when you get up-close, some very subtle but costly improvements can be appreciated.

Painted in 2-stage enamel, the stone-gray finish is lustrous and smooth with only minimal signs of use.

The car is equipped with the desirable "Appearance Group," consisting of chrome bumpers with fog lights up front and FUCHS light alloy wheels.

Euro side markers are a nice addition

Striking the perfect blend of the classic 914-6 and ultra-rare 916 supercar; the targa roof was painstakingly soothed and color finished to match the stone-gray color, a salute to the 916.

The Targa top can be stowed inside the rear trunk to facilitate unrestricted open-air pleasures.

With or without the top, this Porsche looks striking.

There are no door dings, only few blems and rock chips to report.

Porsche rolls on genuine 15-inch FUCHS wheels with YOKOHAMA S-drive 195/50R15 Radials

While we’re down on one knee, let’s have a look underneath.

More important than shiny paint is a healthy undercarriage.

Everything below, including the front and rear suspension, looks marvelous as well.

It's damage free, clean as a whistle.

Most importantly, there is absolutely NO evidence of corrosion, collision damage or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights.

Let's have a peak under the hood.

Being a mid-engine car, this Porsche has two trunks: one in the front, and one in the back.

The front trunk is surprisingly spacious. For safety reasons, Porsche placed the fuel tank amidships.

Note how tidy everything looks. Beneath the carpeted cover rests the spare wheel. The vulnerable trunk floor is perfectly rust and accident free.

ID Plate provides valuable information about the car’s original options and trim.

In the rear trunk, German engineering genius:

Targa top is designed to stow away safely inside, still leaving plenty of space underneath!

Original jack is stored here.

Full Dynamat lining was installed throughout the entire car and provides superior sound deadening for a cool and quiet cabin.

The brand new, fully upgraded leather interior exudes a fantastic aroma; let's investigate!

Custom bucket seats were lowered to provide plenty of head and leg room, even for 6'6"-tall NBA players. "Pristine" is the only way to describe them properly.

Even the dash is covered and stitched in supple leather.

Note the leather grip, Momo steering wheel.

The iconic gauge cluster featuring three large, circular, white-on-black dials with bright orange pointers is a timeless design. You can't improve upon perfection!

The $2000 6-speaker Bluetooth audio system was installed at Car Stereo Warehouse in Anaheim, CA.

All instruments work, including the upgraded 911 VDO gauges mounted in center.

The power windows, door locks, and remote locking bring this Porsche into the 21st century.

The remote locking system automatically raises the windows, locks the doors and sets the alarm. 2 keys with remotes are included.

From the carpets to the rubber seals; everything about this custom leather interior reflects a passionate owner who spared no expense to create this one-of-a-kind, Porsche!

How about a quick peek inside the engine compartment?

The Mad Dog Bulkhead Mount is the optimum conversion to house this indestructible 2.4-Liter 911 engine.

It runs excellent, delivering 125 strong Teutonic horses at 5,900rpm. Woo-Hoo!!

The twin, triple-throat Weber 40MM are perfectly tuned.

Engine's bottom end; dry and clean, there's not a single oil leak to note.

Recently serviced at the dealer, this Porsche is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically.

Speaking of cosmetics, let us stress how immaculate the body is, how sparkling the chrome bumpers, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 4-year old, not a 40-year old car. This one is that clean!

Drivability:

Piloting this well sorted, SuperPorsche is nothing short of exhilarating! 914's seating position is low, like that of an Alpine A110, Mini Cooper, or monoposto, but there's plenty of room, even for tall drivers.

The 6-cylinder power plant starts easily and revs willingly from idle to redline. There are no untoward noises, no fluid leaks and no surprises. The car runs, drives, shifts, corners, and stops perfectly. Very docile around town, but on the open highway the acceleration is mind-blowing.

914's mid-engine configuration provides very neutral handling characteristics. The enhanced suspension modifications easily handle the larger, higher horsepower engine; making the perfect road and track synthesis!

Transmission is Porsche's legendary Type 901 5-speed manual unit, with its racing-derived shift pattern. It shifts smoothly in all gears and the clutch has perfect grip.

Naturally, a super clean Porsche like this one is a prime attention getter, garnering excited comments wherever you go. From the air-cooled engine to the clock, everything works as intended. Recently serviced, (receipts included) there's nothing left to do but to drive and enjoy!

You will not see another 914-6 conversion coming even close to this particular specimen. It's a pristine car, inside and out and with proper care it can be driven forever, or until you are ready to pass it on to the next generation.

Final words of wisdom:
Is this car "mint?" Of course not. No car that has been driven on the highway can rightfully be called "mint." It's a term best reserved for uncirculated coins. But, being a 40 year-old Porsche that was properly upgraded and treated with utmost respect by a wealthy Porsche enthusiast, it's as breathtakingly perfect as it gets.

Certainly one of the most unique Porsche’s in the nation and appreciating daily, the car is offered here with No Reserve. What a great opportunity to purchase a genuine, mid-engine supercar which is sure to remain an outstanding investment for the winning bidder and a joy to drive for many years to come.

Thank you, good luck and HAPPY BIDDING!

Porsche Macan fails moose test, Stuttgart responds

Tue, 14 Oct 2014

Different countries have different safety standards, but most of them revolve around a similar set of tests: front impact, side impact, offset impact, rollover... the usual. But Sweden has its own test. It's called the Moose Test (or the Elk Test), and it's unique to Scandinavia: a car has to be able to avoid a theoretical antlered mammal on the road while traveling at 43.5 miles per hour and return to its previous course without flipping over. The Jeep Grand Cherokee ran afoul of the uniquely Nordic maneuver a couple of years ago, but even more surprising is the way the Porsche Macan has reacted.
Under testing by Sweden's Teknikens Värld, Porsche's downsized crossover - specifically the Macan S Diesel, for what it's worth - didn't flip over, but it skidded off course. In real-world conditions, it follows, the vehicle could run off the road or into oncoming traffic. The testers ran the test several times, and even removed excess weight from the vehicle, and each time it reacted the same way.
In response, Porsche has explained that the behavior is the result of its Active Rollover Protection system kicking in. When the system detects that the vehicle could drastically oversteer, flip over or lose its tire, it momentarily applies the brake on the front outside wheel, allowing the vehicle to shed the cornering forces without losing it completely.

2015 Porsche Cayman GTS

Thu, 29 May 2014

The Porsche Boxster and Cayman will forever nip at the heels of their big brother, the 911 Carrera, and perpetuating this tradition are the latest GTS variants, which add yet another arrow to the quiver of the plucky mid-engined platform.
The GTS' performance enhancements boost horsepower by a mere 15 and shave a tenth from 0 to 60, but Porsche's clever product planners and engineers have stuck to their familiar formula in making the Cayman GTS more desirable than the Boxster for dyed-in-the-wool performance enthusiasts. More on that shortly.
Laps around Spain's Circuito Mallorca RennArena and the nearby Serra de Tramuntana mountain range would shed further light on how the GTS differentiates itself from lesser Caymans.

2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed statue unveiled

Thu, 11 Jul 2013

Each year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a single marque is celebrated with a large and ornate "Central Feature" sculpture, with recent automakers including Audi in 2009, Alfa Romeo in 2010, Jaguar in 2011 and Lotus last year. This year, Porsche gets the honor, and it is using the opportunity to commemorate 50 years of the 911.
The sculpture features three generations of the 911 towering over the Goodwood House. The most recent 991 911 has the lowest position, with an original 1963 car second highest and a 1973 2.7 RS at the top of the pile. Be sure to check out the sculpture for yourself in the gallery of images above.
