For sale is a 1984 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.  The car has 134,000 original miles on the car, the motor has recently been replaced as has less than 2000 miles on a new crate motor. Here are the details.

The car options include T-tops, bucket seats, automatic transmission, RWD, air conditioning, power steering, power disc brakes, WS-6 handling package.

Car is painted black with gold trim (original).  Car has been repainted.  I would consider the paint in fair condition, 30/30 (looks great from 30 feet and 30 miles an hour).  Car has spent most of life in Arizona so the paint was well baked when I purchased.  It did polish out nicely but requires care in keeping spot free when water hits it.  There are minor dings, scratches and rock chips throughout the car, as you would expect from a nice driver.

The body of the car is rust free, as well as the frame.  There are no major dents or dings in the car.  The back bumper plastic is getting a little wavy but not bad compared to some I have seen.  Front grill inserts also show some cracks and wear from age ( I do have another used set of these ).  It would take very little body work to get this car completely straight, door dings are the things that would need fixed.

Motor is brand new.  The original 305 V8 was recently replaced with a new Chevy 5.7 liter (350 cubic inch) V8 crate motor.  Also replaced at that time was the radiator, a new Edelbrock carburetor was installed, the computer system was bypassed and motor and transmission now operate independently, a high-flow converter was installed, and the ram air intake was removed install a basic K&N air cleaner (original equipment is still available).  All emissions equipment was left in place, BUT since the computer was bypassed this car will NOT PASS EMISSION IN COLORADO.  Thus why I am selling the car.  The car runs and drives out great.  Quite a bit more power than the 305 motor.  The exhaust sound is nice and throaty, nice muscle car sound.

The transmission has not been touched, and seems to run out fine.  The rear-end is a POSI unit, it functions fine but does howl when going down the road, I am sure the pinion bearing needs replaced to solve this.  The wheels are the WS-6 package gold finned wheels, these were the high performance wheels designed to get more air to brakes.  The brakes are four wheel disc, they will soon need attention.  The WS-6 package also included heavy duty front and rear stabilizer bars for increased handling.  The tires on the car are Firehawk Indy 500's with 90% of their life still left.

The interior is the weak point of this car.  I have replaced the original tan carpet with black.  The kit covered the floor and rear section, but the side panels and the carpet on the back of the rear seat is still tan.  The top of the dash is cracked in a few places right in the middle, I now have a dash mat on to hide.  The front seats need recovered.  The Arizona sun and heat took their toll here.  Foam is showing through on the front seat bottoms on both seats.  The drivers seat springs will need some attention, they are starting to come through.  Door panels are in good shape but are still tan.  Kick panels and and rocker panels have been sprayed black.

I know I cannot say everything here, so please email with any questions.  I can provide additional pictures or information upon request.  This was going to be my son's first car.  We hate to part with it in this unfinished condition, but have far more money into now than we will get out of it for a car that he can't even drive thanks to the tight emissions rules here in Colorado.  My hope is someone will finish this car to point I know it can be taken.

GM doing fine at retaining Pontiac owners

Fri, 28 Oct 2011

This isn't the first time we've reported positive news about General Motors retaining former Pontiac owners. Get a few more stories like this latest report from Edmund's Auto Observer, and it will mark an ongoing positive trend for GM. Edmunds.com crunched the numbers to see how well the General is hanging on to customers after shutting out the lights at Pontiac, and it found that nearly 40 percent of Pontiac owners stayed with a vehicle from a General Motors brand.
The numbers are a little lower than an earlier R.L. Polk & Company study, but Edmunds says General Motors is keeping more former Pontiac buyers than it has since 2007. Most are turning to vehicles from Chevrolet, especially during January and February of 2011, when GM incentivized Pontiac owners to stay under the umbrella. Those moves seem to have worked, and 28.1 percent of Pontiac owners trading up made the jump into a Bowtie.
Buyers that have gone elsewhere have largely stayed loyal to Domestic automakers, with Ford picking up the most conquests from Pontiac, with 9.4 percent switching. Toyota and Honda picked up 7.4 percent of the pool of former Pontiac drivers. The numbers are defying any predictions that Pontiac buyers would completely exit the General Motors fold, and have climbed up closer to parity with the retention figures of other GM brands from a 2009 low of only 16 percent retention.

STUDY: Ford owns brand loyalty in 2009; Scorned Saturn, Pontiac buyers will look outside of GM

Fri, 16 Oct 2009

Ford buyers appear to love their cars more than customers of any other automotive brand, returning back to the American automaker when it comes time to purchase their next vehicle. According to a study by Experian Automotive, six of the top 10 vehicles for customer brand loyalty wear badges from the Blue Oval. That includes the Ford Fusion (62.4 percent), Ford Edge (57.9 percent), Ford Five Hundred/Taurus (56 percent), Ford Freestyle (51.9 percent), Ford Escape (49.4 percent) and the Ford Focus (47.57 percent).
Other vehicles making up the top 10 include the Toyota Prius (52 percent), Chevy Impala (51.7 percent), Toyota Camry (47.8 percent) and Toyota Corolla (47.56 percent). This brings up an interesting question: With the closing of automotive brands like Saturn and Pontiac, where are those buyers to turn for their next automotive purchase?
Apparently, not back to General Motors. According to Experian, Pontiac owners are most likely to look to the Ford lineup for their next car or truck and Saturn shoppers will switch to Toyota or Honda - not particularly surprising given that Saturn was meant to compete with import brands. Experian predicts that GM's overall market share will fall from 20 percent to about 17.5 percent, with most of the slack being picked up by Ford, Honda and Toyota.

Tony Stewart to star in Smoke Is The Bandit web series

Mon, 10 Mar 2014

NASCAR driver Tony Stewart is making good use of his nickname Smoke in new videos inspired by the 1970s classic Smokey and the Bandit. The original is one of the quintessential automotive movies of its era with a fantastic combination of slapstick comedy and great car stunts in a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. If you've never seen it, check it out immediately.
In the new six-part Smoke IS the Bandit web series, Stewart takes on the role of Burt Reynolds' famous character complete with huge mustache. But instead of trying to smuggle cases of Coors beer it's Mobil 1 oil. The series promises to recreate many of the famous scenes from the movie and includes cameos from other NASCAR drivers.
To complete the look, future videos just need a quality replacement for a young Sally Field to ride shotgun. It would also be really cool if Reynolds could make a brief appearance at some point. Scroll down to check out the trailer and the first episode in the series.
