SELLER REMARKS

The story of Dennis and Kyle Mecham and the Macho T/As that their shop, DKM, turned out in the late 1970s is definitely worth knowing if you're a Pontiac fan. Building on the legacy of guys like Carroll Shelby and Don Yenko, they took factory-fresh Trans Am's like this 1978 example, and added performance and styling that was sorely lacking during the height of the emissions era. Only a handful were built, and this is the only one in this particular color combination. Forget standard "Bandit" Trans Am's, the Macho T/A is where it's at!

Special ordered in Starlight Black with blue and silver stripes, this Trans Am is going to turn a lot of heads every time you take it out. The Macho T/A typically came with gold or red stripes, but a single California buyer opted for this stunning combination and it works as well today as it did back then. Given a frame-on restoration in 2013, it's in extremely nice condition overall, with all the original DKM body pieces intact and the stripes now buried under the clear for an impossible shine. As a treasured piece of history, this car has obviously led a pretty easy life despite its added performance, and extraordinary efforts were used to preserve all the irreplaceable DKM equipment. The result is a car that looks factory-fresh but stands apart from all the other Trans Am's out there, and if you know the story, it makes this car insanely appealing and collectible.

The DKM guys did their magic inside the Trans Am as well, installing a custom center console with serial number plaque (this is car #106), a special steering wheel button, and other touches that reminded new owners that this car is something special. The interior was completely restored, including new seat covers, carpets, and door panels, and the original console and dash were repaired since replacements are impossible to source today. Bright engine-turned panels frame the factory gauges, and yes, that's a Hurst shifter for the 4-speed manual, an unusual feature because this was originally a California car and the Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 wasn't emissions-legal in CA (DKM worked around it by selling the cars as "used"). It also includes factory A/C and power windows, but it was originally ordered without a radio and that's how it remains today. In back, the trunk is correctly detailed with a space-saver spare and restored jack assembly.

Horsepower was in short supply in 1978, so the DKM guys did their own tune-up on the Pontiac's 400 cubic inch V8, including an upgraded carburetor, custom timing, and a set of Hooker exhaust headers, which, in this California car's case, were delivered in the trunk where they remain today. The engine is detailed correctly with a big blue scoop up top and Pontiac Turquoise engine below, and all the finishes, wiring, and decals are correct. It's backed by a 4-speed manual transmission, making it a blast to drive, and the new exhaust system sounds fantastic. Correct red oxide primer on the floors, reproduction decals, and other small things make the chassis stand out, and obviously this Macho T/A's restoration was a labor of love. Factory "snowflake" wheels are fitted with reproduction 225/70/15 Goodyears to give it that perfect 1978 look.

Heavily documented with known ownership history to Day One, this one-of-a-kind piece of Pontiac history is like finding a previously undiscovered Shelby Mustang. With an awesome story behind it, this Macho T/A deserves a place in the finest Pontiac collection. Call today!

GM doing fine at retaining Pontiac owners

Fri, 28 Oct 2011

This isn't the first time we've reported positive news about General Motors retaining former Pontiac owners. Get a few more stories like this latest report from Edmund's Auto Observer, and it will mark an ongoing positive trend for GM. Edmunds.com crunched the numbers to see how well the General is hanging on to customers after shutting out the lights at Pontiac, and it found that nearly 40 percent of Pontiac owners stayed with a vehicle from a General Motors brand.
The numbers are a little lower than an earlier R.L. Polk & Company study, but Edmunds says General Motors is keeping more former Pontiac buyers than it has since 2007. Most are turning to vehicles from Chevrolet, especially during January and February of 2011, when GM incentivized Pontiac owners to stay under the umbrella. Those moves seem to have worked, and 28.1 percent of Pontiac owners trading up made the jump into a Bowtie.
Buyers that have gone elsewhere have largely stayed loyal to Domestic automakers, with Ford picking up the most conquests from Pontiac, with 9.4 percent switching. Toyota and Honda picked up 7.4 percent of the pool of former Pontiac drivers. The numbers are defying any predictions that Pontiac buyers would completely exit the General Motors fold, and have climbed up closer to parity with the retention figures of other GM brands from a 2009 low of only 16 percent retention.

2008-2009 Pontiac G8 recalled over airbag concern

Mon, 07 Nov 2011

General Motors is recalling around 38,000 Pontiac G8 sedans from its 2008 and 2009 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the cars may have a passenger-side airbag flaw that might prevent proper deployment in certain scenarios.
According to NHTSA, the airbag might not adequately protect a fifth percentile woman - that is, a woman around four-foot, 11-inches weighing 108 pounds. The New York Times indicates that the anomaly was found during a crash test conducted by GM's Australian branch, Holden, which was testing the G8's twin (read: Commodore) for head injuries. According to that report, the test in question is specifically tailored to simulate injuries to females, so the results do not apply to men or children.
The issue has been blamed on a seat position sensor that governs airbag deployment rates. NHTSA indicates that when the front passenger seat is moved all the way forward, the faulty sensor may inappropriately trigger a 30-millisecond delay between airbag stages, potentially leading to greater injuries.

GM recalls 61k more vehicles in three campaigns

Sun, 05 Oct 2014

Following a stop-delivery order for its new midsize trucks and a rash of recent recalls, General Motors is issuing three more campaigns covering 60,575 vehicles in North America with 57,182 of them in the US. As of October 1, the automaker has issued a total of 74 recalls (see the ridiculously long chart to the right) this year covering 26,495,070 units in the US.
The largest campaign covers 46,873 examples in the US of the 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 and 2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle imported from Australia. It's possible for the driver's knee to hit the key and make it move from the "Run" to "ACC" position while driving. GM says its Holden division is developing a fixed-blade key that's supposed to fix the problem by only allowing it to rotate toward the "On" position. There has been one crash caused by this fault but no injuries or fatalities.
The second recall is for 10,005 units of the 2004-2007 Cadillac CTS-V and 2006-2007 Cadillac STS-V because "the fuel pump module electrical terminal may overheat." This can cause a flange to melt and allow the pump to leak fuel. GM specifies that the remedy for the CTS-V is replacing the fuel module and fuel tank jumper harness, but it doesn't specify how the STS-V is being repaired.
